VESTAL, N.Y.—The men’s and women’s soccer teams have begun preseason training. The volleyball squad it set to get things going later this week.

On Wednesday afternoon, all three head coaches and selected players spoke to the local media about their upcoming seasons.

Head Men’s Soccer Coach Paul Marco

“Last year, the team was very young and that affected us in some areas. I think we adjusted those things during the spring season. We needed to clean some areas and we have. We are still quite young, but I think the experience the freshmen gained last year through spring has helped.”

“I think in the spring season, we were able to put last fall behind us. I do think that the guys have come in pretty focused and ready to compete pretty hard and prepare for Colgate (on August 24).”

“We played we last fall but we weren’t getting the results. I do think our returning players have more experience and coming back to the field has helped us move forward. A new crop of players might keep the attitude positive. Things are looking pretty good. One day in—we are doing okay.”

“At breakfast this morning, I saw some of the new guys sitting with some of the returning guys so I think the barriers that need to be broken down for good chemistry are starting to come down. We had some good team building activities yesterday and this morning.”

“Some guys came back in terrific shape. I think that could be one of our strengths. The willingness of our guys to perform in their positions and adapt to the game could be another one of our strengths. We grew last year as a team and especially during the spring and that will help us too.”

Senior back Trey Jasenski

“We are looking to do well this season. We are looking to make a good appearance in the (America East) tournament. So far, the guys look pretty fit and I think it is going to be a great season.”

“Last year did not end up like we planned but we are making good steps so far this year and we are looking forward to bringing back something good.”

Senior forward Jake Keegan

“We are returning nearly our whole team from last year, including all four backs, so we are expecting to excite the fans and get some more wins this year.”

Sophomore midfielder Tucker Sandercock

“We did not do as well as we wanted to last year but that fuels us for this season. We made a lot of mistakes last year that are easily fixable. We already started off better this year, we had a good spring and we have a lot of new faces that are really going to help our team out.”

“We have a lot more depth this year. All of our returning guys got a lot better. Competing for positions is going to be big this year.”

Head Women’s Soccer Coach Sarah McClellan

“We are really excited for the season. Obviously, we have another week to prepare (for Bucknell on August 17). That is something we want to utilize and take advantage of. There is a lot of great excitement and energy building to start the season off.”

“I think we have more confidence and maturity this year. We developed well in the spring and I think mentally we are a stronger team than we have ever been. We have a lot of leadership. We have 12 seniors, so they certainly are a big piece of what is going to make our team move forward.”

“Early in the season, it is going to be about the seniors setting the tone and laying the framework down for the season. I think as we grow and develop as a team, and as the freshmen grow to learn the system, they will be able to make a difference as well.”

Senior midfielder Brittany Walsh

“We grew a lot as a team this spring and we just really picked up where we left off last year, which we are excited about.”

Senior forward Jamie Holliday

“This past spring, we worked a lot on our finishing and a lot on our attack. We have a lot of experience this season, which I think will help a lot with our attack.”

“The non-conference schedule sets the tone for the rest of the season. We want our opponents to be looking at our non-conference results and realizing we are good this year.”

Junior midfielder Kaitlyn Cook

“We are looking forward to the season. Our team has a lot of confidence and talent this year. We are looking to make it past the semifinals. The freshmen have done well and we have a great group of players.”

Head Volleyball Coach Glenn Kiriyama

“We had a tough season this last year. It was our first time (since 2003) not making the post season. This year, we obviously really want to push to make the post season. We want to finish a lot higher in the conference than we did last year.”

“We had a fairly young team this last year. We had a freshman setter last year (Amanda Dettman) and she has come a long ways in the year that she has been here.”

“We play some tough teams during the non-conference schedule but that really helps us out for conference play during our season.”

Senior middle blocker Alex Roland

“This season is going to be very exciting. We have a lot of people who played last year as freshmen who have improved. We have definitely come together as a team more. We have learned to communicate more on the court in a more positive way and I think that is going to be the deal breaker this season.”

Senior outside hitter Iva Pataleva

“It is great to be back and because it is my senior year, it is even more exciting for me. Last year was tough but we have more experience this year. Three of us are seniors and we have some good juniors and sophomores.”
