America East Conference Release
VESTAL, N,.Y.—Senior midfielder Ryan Walter has been named to the America East Men’s Soccer All-Academic Team for the second consecutive season. He earned the honor through a combination of his accomplishments on the field and in the classroom.
To be nominated for the distinction, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve for their team and participate in at least 50 percent of their team’s games or competitions. In the classroom, student-athletes must have a 3.30 GPA and have completed at least one calendar year at their institution. Freshmen are not eligible for consideration 2011.
Walter concluded his career as a three-time America East All-Conference selection, something only four other Binghamton players have attained during the program’s 10-year NCAA Division I era. He was a four-year starter and just the third two-year captain in Binghamton’s Division I program history. In the classroom, Walter has been named to the America East Honor Roll each semester and in April 2009, was inducted into the National College Athlete Honors Society.
In the seven years since the America East created the Men’s Soccer All-Academic Team, Binghamton has had three other student-athletes earn consecutive spots on the squad. Current assistant coach Matt Narode was tabbed in 2005 and 2006. Adam Chavez got the nod in 2006 and 2007 and Scott Zobre was honored in 2009 and 2010.
Walter finished the 2011 season with four goals, including one in each of the final two games of the season. He netted the game-winner against Rider on Sept. 18 and against eventual America East regular-season champion Boston on Oct. 30. During his career, Walter scored four game-winning goals.
NOTES: The other four players who were three-time all-conference honorees were Graham Munro (2002-05), Danilo (2003-05), Chavez (2004 and 2006-07) and Barry Neville (2005 and 2007-08). The other two-year captains were Stephen Bruce (2002-04) and Neville (2007-08).
