Women’s Basketball Loses 60-35 At Arizona State
Murphy finishes with nine points, Lawes adds eight points

TEMPE, Ariz. – Janae Fulcher scored 11 points and Isidora Purkovic finished with 10 points, leading Arizona State (3-3) to a 60-35 win over Binghamton (0-7) in the opening round of the Arizona State Women’s Basketball Classic on Saturday afternoon at the Wells Fargo Arena. The Bearcats will face either Dayton or UNLV in the final round on Sunday at 1 p.m. EST.
Using their size advantage, Arizona State outscored Binghamton 30-4 in the paint. The Sun Devils also scored 27 points of off Bearcat turnovers.
“We knew coming in that Arizona State is a good team and they are a little bigger and faster than we are,” head coach Nicole Scholl said. “Still, we competed hard and I was proud of how we battled.”
The Sun Devils raced out to a 12-0 lead in the opening 4:16 of play. Joy Burke led the way with four points. At the other end of the court, the Bearcats misfired on their first six shots of the game.
Binghamton got to within 16-8 but Arizona State followed with 10 more unanswered points in a span of 4:17 to go up 28-8 with 4:17 left in the first half. Promise Amukumara had four points during that stretch.
The Bearcats scored the opening four points of the second half, pulling to within 35-20 with 18:22 left in regulation. From there, however, the Bearcats were held scoreless for six minutes and the Sun Devils padded their lead to 43-22 with 12:01 left to go.
Arizona State locked up the game with a 14-4 run in a span of 4:15 to go up 58-31 with 2:49 left in regulation.
Freshman forward Morgan Murphy finished with a team-high nine points. Senior guard Mallory Lawes added eight points and sophomore forward Sherae Swinson finished with seven points and a team-high six rebounds.
