VESTAL, N.Y. – Taylor McCarley finished with a triple double (18 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists) as UMBC (4-24, 3-13 AE) outlasted Binghamton (5-24, 2-14 AE) 66-60 in double overtime in an America East women’s basketball game on Saturday afternoon at the Events Center. The Bearcats now carry the No. 8 seed into the upcoming conference tournament and will square off against top-seeded and host Albany in the quarterfinals on Friday at 6 p.m.

McCarley, whose triple-double was the first of her career, netted five of her points in the decisive second overtime period, in which the Retrievers outscored the Bearcats 12-6. Janelle Saling added 16 points for the game and Sara Talbert chipped in 14 points.

For the Bearcats, the defeat overshadowed a second straight standout performance by senior guard Vaneeshia Paulk. She finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds to record the first double-double of her career. Sophomore forward Morgan Murphy finished with 15 points.

“I feel bad for our four seniors because we fought hard and wanted to get the win for them in their final home game,” head coach Nicole Scholl said. “UMBC made their shots in the second overtime both from the free throw line and (beyond) the three-point line.”

Binghamton trailed 42-31 with 6:20 left in regulation. From there, however, it went on a 13-2 run over the remainder of regulation to force overtime. Paulk had six of her points during that stretch.

Murphy’s layup with 2:39 left in the first overtime period gave Binghamton a 53-47 lead. UMBC, however, closed out the period on a 7-1 run to deadlock the game at 54-54. McCarley had a three-point play and Talbert netted the other four points during that span.

Three pointers by Saling and Emily Russo gave UMBC a 60-56 lead with 1:47 left in the second overtime period. Junior forward Sherae Swinson made a pair of free throws with 1:31 left, trimming the deficit to 60-58.

From there, McCarley sealed the game by going 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the final 31 seconds.

Paulk has averaged 21.0 points and 9.0 rebounds over the last two games. Before the game, she and fellow seniors Stephanie Jensen, Kyra Aloizos and Julia Barac were honored during a brief on-court ceremony.

NOTES: McCarley and Paulk were the America East Players of the Game ... the double overtime game was the first played by Binghamton since it lost 68-67 at home to Lehigh on Dec. 21, 2007 … the Bearcats and Great Danes square off for the second time in America East Tournament history. Albany won 64-57 in a quarterfinal game on March 14, 2008. The Great Danes have won the past two conference tournaments.
