VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton women’s lacrosse program released their 2012 schedule as announced by head coach Tony Zostant. The Bearcats have composed a 16-game slate for next spring, which includes 11 non-conference games and the typical six America East contests. Binghamton’s schedule features nine home games and seven road match ups.
“We are very excited about our 2012 schedule,” head coach Tony Zostant said. “The schedule is full of great opponents that will challenge us every time we step on the field. Our difficult non-conference schedule should help prepare us for America East play, which is always tough year in and year out.”
Binghamton kicks off the 2012 season at home in late February against St. Francis (PA), then welcomes Big East member Connecticut to the Bearcats Sports Complex a week later. Last season, a late BU rally came up short against the Huskies, falling 11-9. Following their opening two home games, the Bearcats take to the road for their next three contests. During the three-game road trip BU will face off against Marist, Canisius and Lehigh. Canisius is the reigning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) champion, while Lehigh advanced to the Patriot League semifinals after finishing the regular season in a tie for first with a 5-1 conference record.
BU plays their final two contests at home before the America East schedule begins. The Bearcats host Atlantic 10 member LaSalle on March 17 and Patriot League finalist Colgate on March 21. Binghamton then opens conference play three days later at New Hampshire. Binghamton will be looking for revenge against the Wildcats as they dashed BU’s hopes of making their first conference tournament in last year’s season finale. New Hampshire came back from a five-goal second half deficit to knock off the Bearcats and end their 2011 season.
Two of BU’s next three America East games will be at home before the Bearcats take a two-game break from conference play. Binghamton hosts Stony Brook on March 31 before they travel to Albany to take on the defending champions and NCAA quarterfinalist on April 4. The Great Danes lost to eventual national champion Northwestern in the round of eight. The schedule doesn’t ease up with UMBC coming to town a couple days later fresh off their 2011 America East championship game appearance. Following the Bearcats tussle with the Retrievers, BU hosts Bucknell before heading back to the capital region for a match up with Siena.
Binghamton rounds out their schedule with a trip to Burlington, Vermont as coach Zostant’s defense looks to stop the league’s top goal scorer in 2011, Sydney Mas. The Bearcats will end their season just like they began with two home contests. BU’s first-ever match up with Cornell caps the Bearcats non-conference schedule before the season finale against Boston University on April 28.
BU ended the 2011 campaign with a 4-13 record overall and 1-5 in conference play. Six of the Bearcats’ games were decided by three goals or less, including two one-goal conference matches. Binghamton graduated two all-time leaders as Ali Castiglie (all-time points leader) and Beth Moore (all-time goals leader) earned their degrees last May. The Bearcats return their top point scorer from 2011 in Lis Zuern who was the first BU women’s lacrosse player to tally 50 points in a season (35 goals, 15 assists).
