VESTAL, N.Y. - The Binghamton women’s lacrosse team picked up another academic accolade this week after being honored by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) as an 2013 Academic Squad. It marks the second time in the past three seasons that the Bearcats have achieved the feat. Graduates Katherine Hunsberger and Isabelle Mahoney as well as senior Erica Foley were also honored by the IWLCA being named to the 2013 Academic Honor Roll.
“The student-athletes in this program have worked diligently to raise our academic profile and set new benchmarks,” head coach Stephanie Allen said. “I’m extremely pleased with their efforts in the classroom, especially with high demands during the spring semester. We are very proud of what this team has accomplished academically and will continue to strive for greater achievements.”
Foley, Hunsberger and Mahoney were three of 190 Division I student-athletes honored by the IWLCA for achieving a GPA of 3.20 or higher. The trio constructed three of the five players from the America East to be named to the list. Binghamton was one of 65 schools that the IWLCA recognized as Division I Academic Squads for attaining a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The Bearcats were just one of two teams from the America East to be honored by the IWLCA. Joining Binghamton on the list was the University at Albany.
Following the 2013 season, the Bearcats garnered the highest GPA for an America East women’s lacrosse program after posting a 3.19 team GPA. It was the second time in the last three years that the women’s lacrosse program led the conference in team GPA.
Binghamton placed two-thirds of its players on the America East Honor Roll for achieving a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The Bearcats were led by Hunsberger, an America East All-Academic Team selection, and her perfect 4.0 GPA. Hunsberger became the third Bearcat to be named to the conference All-Academic Team and is the first player in program history to be named to the team in back-to-back seasons. Hunsberger graduated this past May with a degree in integrated neuroscience.
Mahoney and Foley were both named to the America East Honor Roll following the 2013 season. Mahoney graduated this past May with a dual degree in economics and art history, while Foley begins her senior season with the Bearcats next spring as she works towards a degree in economics.
The recognition marks the sixth time the women’s lacrosse team has made the list. The Bearcats earned IWLCA Academic Squad honors from 2005-2008 and in 2011. With three more Bearcats being named to the IWLCA Academic Honor Roll, Binghamton has now placed 16 student-athletes on the list since 2006.
