VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton women’s lacrosse team scored five goals in the first five minutes and cruised to a 19-3 victory over visiting St. Bonaventure in Saturday’s contest. The Bearcats tied a program record allowing only three goals at the Bearcat Sports Complex.
The Bearcats continued their best start in program history thanks to a stingy defensive performance and another great showing by the balanced offense. Bri Arthur, Angela Vespa, and Alex Fisher led the way with four goals each as seven different Binghamton players tallied goals. Arthur the freshman phenom has a team-high 18 goals.
Binghamton won 16 of the game’s 22 draw controls and were in control of possession throughout. Binghamton raced out to a 7-0 lead and allowed just a lone goal in the first half. Bri Arthur was center stage in the Bearcats hot start, netting the game’s first goal in just 30 seconds. Arthur completed her fourth career hat trick in just five collegiate games.
St. Bonaventure was able to get one back to make the score 7-1 with 15:55 left in the first half, but the Bearcats would go on to net the game’s next eight goals and put the match-up too far out of reach for the Bonnies.
Binghamton registered the first five goals of the second half, and opened up a 14 goal advantage, 15-1. Senior Angela Vespa, and Freshman Bri Arthur netted two goals apiece during that stretch.
Six different Bearcats caused turnovers, and Binghamton picked up 25 ground balls while turning the ball over a mere eight times.
The Bearcats recorded 10 assists the program’s most since 2011 in a meeting against Niagara. Eight Binghamton players notched at least one assist, led by Sophia Racciatti’s three.
Sophia Racciatti tied for a game-high 5 points (2g, 3a) against St. Bonaventure. Angela Vespa and Bri Arthur joined Racciatti with five points (4g, 1a), respectively. Junior Alex Fisher contributed four points on four goals giving her six on the season. Valerie Denapoli had a solid outing scoring a hat trick on her five shots on goal.
Sophomore Erin McNulty had a stellar outing in goal Saturday afternoon recording five saves and allowing just two St. Bonaventure goals.
Binghamton will conclude its three-game homestand against Cornell on Wednesday, March 12 at 4 p.m.
