BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Binghamton women’s lacrosse team improved to 2-0 for the first time in program history following its thrilling 10-9 victory over Lehigh, Tuesday evening from the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Bearcats (2-0) surged head in the final 3:30 behind a pair of late goals from freshman Bri Arthur to upend the host Mountain Hawks (1-1).

“We’re excited that we continue to take steps forward,” head coach Stephanie Allen said. “It was a complete team effort and I was proud of how we executed in the final minutes. The team kept their composure and found a way to win.”

In a tightly contested game throughout, Binghamton found itself down a goal with under four minutes to play. After neither team netted a goal over the previous seven minutes, Arthur fired a free position attempt past substitute goalie Taylor Tvedt to even the game at nine with 3:30 remaining. Almost two minutes later the reigning America East Rookie of the Week, freed herself of a Lehigh defender and netted the game-winner with 1:34 left on the clock.

“Today our focus was cleaning up the mistakes that we made last Saturday and I thought we did a nice job of keeping our errors to a minimum. This is a great motivator going into Saturday against another quality team (Lafayette). I think we are expecting to win now and will continue to strive for this feeling.”

Arthur, who scored five goals in her debut as a Bearcat, added five more to her season total against the Mountain Hawks leading the Bearcats to its first-ever 2-0 start in school history. Binghamton picked up back-to-back wins for just the third time ever and the first time since March of 2012.

Binghamton trailed by just one at the break thanks to two goals by Arthur in the opening half’s final 2:27. After a Lehigh goal barely a minute into the second half, Arthur and classmate Callon Williams tallied back-to-back goals to level the game at seven. However, Lehigh responded with two of the contest’s next three goals to take a 9-8 lead with 10:28 remaining. The two teams played to a stalemate over the next seven minutes until Arthur’s late-game heroics.

In the first half, Binghamton jumped out to a 2-1 lead thanks to a pair of goals from junior Renee Kiviat. Lehigh answered however with a 4-0 run to take a 5-2 advantage. The two teams traded goals over the next five minutes of play as Lehigh took its largest lead of the game, 6-3, at the 6:52 mark. Arthur then went to work notching her first two goals of the contest to pull the Bearcats within one heading into the break.

Sophomore goalie Erin McNulty made six saves to earn her second win of the season and fourth of her career.

Binghamton was dominant in the draw circle doubling up Lehigh 14-7. The Bearcats converted 3-of-5 free position attempts with Arthur going a perfect 2-for-2.

Sophomore Sophie Racciatti and freshman Valerie DeNapoli each scored for Binghamton. Senior Angela Vespa connected with Racciatti for the Bearcats’ lone assist.

Binghamton head back to the Keystone state this weekend for a meeting with Lafayette, its second straight Patriot League opponent on Saturday, March 1 at 2:30 pm.
