Women’s soccer adds six recruits for 2014
Coach McClellan bolsters program with half-dozen scholastic standouts

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton women’s soccer coach Sarah McClellan has announced the signing of six talented student athletes who will join the Bearcats for the 2014 season. Hailing from New York are: Patricia Hanley, Katie Hatziyianis, Emma Maslin, Valerie McNamara, Katherine Millet, and Hannah Shankman.
“This class brings a wealth of soccer experience, athleticism, and competitive drive,” McClellan said. “We are very excited for the 2014 season and believe these players are fantastic additions to a very solid group of returners.”
Joining the Bearcats this fall will be Patricia Hanley (East Islip), Katie Hatziyianis (Massapequa Park), Emma Maslin (Whitney Point), Valerie McNamara (Williamsville), Katherine Millet (Manlius), and Hannah Shankman (Clinton).
Below is capsule of each player.
Patricia Hanley (F): A forward/midfielder from East Islip, NY and Saint Anthony’s High School… Varsity soccer starter… Leading team scorer both in her junior and senior years… Received Best Offensive Player Award… Three time League Champions… Led team to a State Championship in 2012… Long time member of ISA club team… Team competed for ENY State Cup Championship… Honor Roll student… President of Ancient Order of Hibernians Junior Girls Division 7… Member of Kids Stock the House Club for Ronald McDonald House… Daughter of John and Tricia Hanley.
McClellan on Hanley: “Tricia is a strong, competitive player; I think she will make huge strides at the college level and am excited to see it. She is technical on the ball and quick learner in building combining chemistry on the field. She has all the ingredients to emerge as a dangerous attacking player.”
Katie Hatziyianis (GK): A goalkeeper from Massapequa Park, NY and Massapequa High School… Varsity starter and captain… Led team to 2013 State Championship with 12 shutouts… Awarded Defensive Player of the Game for performance in State Championship match… Named to the All-Long Island First Team… Selected to the New York All-State First Team… Two time All Conference player… Participated in ENYYSA ODP… Invited to US Soccer National Training Center… Attended USL Super Y League ODP National Camp … Member of East Meadow Hurricanes ECNL team… National Honor Society member… High Honor Roll student… Daughter of Van and Roseanne Hatziyianis .
McClellan on Hatziyianis: “Katie is a skillful goalkeeper and has worked incredibly hard to become a complete player. She brings a ton of high level experience, a great understanding of the game, and the talent to go along with it. Her fantastic attitude and work ethic are going to take her a long way.”
Emma Maslin (D): A defender from Whitney Point, NY and Whitney Point High School… Four year varsity starter… Team Captain… All-time leading goal scorer and assist leader… Three time First Team All-Conference… Member of United FC club premier team … Led club team to four state cup final four appearances… National Honor Society member… Member of SADD… High Honor Roll student… Member of High School Chorus… Active leader in student council… Participated in Foreign Language Club… Class Vice President… Recipient of the Rotary Youth Leadership Award… Daughter of Brent and Lynnette Maslin.
McClellan on Maslin: “Emma brings a real competitive spirit every time she steps onto the field. She is highly coachable and will be an asset to our back line. Her willingness to communicate and her athleticism will allow her to transition quickly into the college game.”
Katherine Millet (M/D): A midfielder/defender from Manlius, NY and FM High School… Varsity captain and standout player… Named to Class AA All-Sectional Team… A Class AA CNYCL League First Team Selection… Recipient of the Class AA CNYCL Player of the Year Award… Named to the ALL CNY Team… New York State Class AA All-State… Scholar-athlete High Honor Roll… Member of Empire Academy and Syracuse Development Academy teams as well as WPSL Syracuse Lady Knights… Led club team to several state championships, a regional title and national championship showing… Member of NYW ODP… Girls IMG Academy National top player pool… Member of High School Concert Orchestra and Step Team… Long time Girl Scout earning Bronze and Silver awards… Volunteer youth coach… Holds US Youth Coaching License… Daughter of Darryl Millet and Leslie Cameron.
McClellan on Millet: “Kat is a versatile player anywhere in the midfield and back. I most like that she is a gritty player and ultra-competitive. Her tenacity raises the level of the players around her and makes her a fun player to watch.”
Valerie McNamara (M/D): A midfielder and defender from Williamsville, N.Y. and Nichols School… Four year varsity starter… Two year captain and team MVP… Led team to New York State Catholic Championship as a freshmen… Named Super 7 Athlete of the Week… Named Monsignor Marin League MVP… An All-League First Team selection… WNY Scholar Athlete… Four year Olympic Development Program member… Member of Empire Academy club team… 2013 State Cup Championship… Also a standout basketball point guard and captain… Honor Student and recipient of the 2013 National Merit Commendation… Silver Medal National Latin Exam placing… Member of multiple school clubs including Heart Club, GSA, Green Key, and Med club… Active in community service projects… TOP Soccer volunteer… Daughter of Jim and Sherry McNamara.
McClellan on McNamara: “Val is a smart, versatile player; she brings good presence to the field and works well with those around her. Her drive and enthusiasm to develop as a top level player will help her to make the jump to collegiate competition. We had Val at our prospect clinic and knew very quickly that she is a player we would like to coach.”
Hannah Shankman (D/M/F): A midfielder from Clinton, N.Y. and Clinton High School… Varsity standout… As a Senior, led team to a conference championship and Class B Sectional semifinals… Led team with 34 goals and 16 assists senior year… Set a school record of 5 goals in one game…All Mohawk Valley … Named Section 3 Class B All Star… Selected as Team MVP and Outstanding Offensive Player… An All-League All Star selection… Named to the All CNY Soccer Team… Member of Rising Stars Blasters club team, Syracuse Development Academy, and Syracuse Lady Knights WPSL teams … Also competed for High School Track Team… Active member of Student Council… National Honor Society member… Daughter of Greg and Julie Shankman.
McClellan on Shankman: “Hannah is an exceptional athlete; she is quick and mobile. Her versatility to play anywhere on the field will be a huge asset. Hannah has a contagious passion for the game and will develop quickly into a strong collegiate player. The sky is the limit.”
After a 2013 season (8-8-2) that culminated in the program’s eighth postseason bid in the last 10 years, McClellan is excited about adding another strong recruiting class to her core of returnees.
“We are returning some strong players with lots of experience as well as some young players who are ready to step up and be difference makers,” she said. “This incoming group will add immensely as we get ready to compete and strive for our team goals. The talent and potential in this 2014 team will be exciting to see developed. Everyone is working hard this spring and we are eager for the upcoming season. Our technical and athletic qualities are going to allow us to play a fast paced, high level of entertaining soccer.”
