TEANECK, N.J.—Senior midfielder Brittany Walsh netted the game’s lone goal in the 54th minute and Binghamton women’s soccer improved to 6-2 overall with a 1-0 road win at FDU (3-3-3) Sunday afternoon at University Stadium. The Bearcats improved to 7-2 all-time against the Knights and continued the team’s best start since the 2004 conference championship season.

Seven minutes into the second half, the Bearcats were awarded a free kick 25 yards out on the left. Sophomore defender Connie Gormley sent it toward goal and the Knights’ clearance header bounced out to Walsh near the edge of the 18-yard box. Walsh then scorched a half-volley into the far corner for her second goal of the season.

“It was a phenomenal goal from Brittany,” head coach Sarah McClellan said. “What a half-volley ... it had the net jumping and was fun to watch.”

Juniors Carrie Martin and Stephanie Speirs each played a half to share the team’s fourth shutout of the season. Speirs made six saves in the second half as the Knights pressed for the equalizer.

The teams each registered 10 shots.

“It was great to get a win on the road,” McClellan said. “I’m pleased with how we bounced back from that close loss on Friday and how we competed and stayed composed for a full 90 minutes. It was a rough game and I thought we kept our heads and managed the game very well.”

Binghamton next plays at Marist on Friday.
