PHILADELPHIA, PA—Binghamton (2-1-0) dropped its first contest of the season, losing 3-0 to Saint Joseph’s (1-0-1) late Friday afternoon from Finnesey Field. Last year’s A-10 Midfielder of the Year Mo Hawkins scored a pair of goals for the host Hawks who outshot the Bearcats 16-6.
In the first half, Saint Joseph’s jumped out to the 1-0 lead as Hawkins finished on a header at the 14th minute. Just six minutes later, Binghamton threatened as senior forward Kerry Sullivan was denied by St. Joseph’s GK Christine Neal, one of her three saves on the afternoon.
Junior goalie Carrie Martin tried keeping the deficit to one as she made a pair of back-to-back saves in the 32nd minute. The offensive pressure proved to be too much for Binghamton as the home squad added a late goal with just three minutes left in the half, leaving the visiting Bearcats down by a pair of goals at break.
In the second half, with Binghamton trying to narrow the gap, it was Hawkins once again who answered the call, putting the game out of reach as she scored her second goal in the 78th minute. Binghamton failed to score for the first time in 2012, despite tallying five corner kicks that they were unable to take advantage of.
Binghamton takes an eight day break before their next contest when they square off in their home opener with Lehigh Sunday, Sept. 2 at 1 p.m. Lehigh, who competes in the Patriot League is 0-1 this season after falling 2-0 to Seton Hall earlier this afternoon.
