VESTAL, N.Y.—Junior midfielder Conor O’Brien and senior forward Sarah Furminger snapped a second-half scoreless tie with goals 1:15 apart and Binghamton women’s soccer ended its season on a high note with 2-1 road win at Vermont.

The Bearcats (8-8-1, 2-5-1 AE) finished the season with back-to-back wins but fell short of advancing to the America East tournament. Binghamton did even its final record at .500 and improved upon its seven-win campaign of 2011.

In the 69th minute, senior back Meghan McCarty sent a ball toward goal and it bounced over the Vermont keeper. OBrien was in perfect position to tap it in for her second goal of the season. Just 1:15 later, Furminger hit a low strike to the left corner from 20 yards away to push BU’s lead to 2-0. The goal was Furminger’s fixth of the season.

The Catamounts (4-12-1, 3-4-1 AE) got on the board in the 87th minute but Binghamton held on for the win.

“I thought we controlled the game possession-wise,” head coach Sarah McClellan said. “I’m pleased with our technical play and the way we moved the ball and built up our possession from the backs to the forwards. We scored two beautiful goals and our seniors were involved throughout the game. I was very happy with how we came out with pride and played with class today. It’s a shame we aren’t going on to the playoffs because we held our own against every team this year. But today was a great way to finish the season and I’m happy to send our seniors out with a win and finish on a high note.”

Binghamton held a 10-9 shots advantage.

Junior keepers Carrie Martin and Stephanie Speirs each played 45 minutes and recorded a save.
