Women’s Tennis Concludes Play At Cornell Fall Invite

Sophomore Sara Kohtz

ITHACA, N.Y.—Binghamton wrapped up their first tournament of the fall season at the Cornell Fall Invitational, going 9-16 overall during the three day event. The doubles duo of Sara Kohtz and freshman Annie DiMuro had the best showing for Binghamton, advancing to the doubles finals in the B Flight.

“I was really pleased with how we competed in our first weekend of tournament action,” head coach Libby McGovern said. “We did a lot of encouraging things out there against some really quality opponents.”

Junior Katya Medianik recovered from a difficult three set defeat in her opening match of the tournament (4-6, 6-2, 10-8) to have a very strong 2-2 outing on the singles court. Underclassmen Shea Brodsky, Kohtz and DiMuro advanced to the B Flight quarterfinals in their first action of the fall, highlighted by a pair of three set thrillers. Brodsky defeated Akron’s Shannon Newnes in comeback fashion, winning 3-6, 7-5, 11-9. DiMuro also won in a marathon match in her first collegiate action, defeating Karolina Maksimava 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 10-7.

In doubles, Kohtz and DiMuro won hard fought victories over Cleveland State 9-7 and Akron 8-5 to secure a spot in the finals of the B Flight.  However, the two were unable to compete in the final and had to withdraw from the match due to injury.

BU has a week of practice before their next event; the Brown Invite. The Bears will host a three day tournament, which begins on Friday, September 20.
