Fort Myers, Florida—The Bearcats (7-11) tallied their second consecutive victory with an impressive 6-1 win over Florida Gulf Coast University on Sunday in Fort Myers, Florida. The Bearcats swept doubles play and was dominant in singles winning five of six matches.
All three doubles matches were highly contested, as Binghamton picked up three victories decided by three points or less. The action was culminated by a 9-8 (7-4) marathon victory from the duo of senior Jillian Santos and freshman Missy Edelblum. With the victory, Santos tallied her team-high 14th doubles victory, while Edelblum notched her 10th win of the season.
After Edelblum lost her opening singles match, the Bearcats reeled off five straight wins. Freshman Taylor Hollander got things rolling with a straight set victory at the no.2 spot. Fellow freshman Katherine Medianik followed suit with a 6-3,6-4 victory and the trio of seniors; Emma Leibowicz, Marina Bykovskaya and Jillian Santos finished out the afternoon by giving the visiting squad their seventh victory of the season.
For Santos, her 6-3,1-6,6-2 win raises her to fourth place alone on the career wins list with 84. She needs just one win to move into a tie for third place, three for second place and four to share the lead with 2011 graduate and former teammate Yulia Smirnova. Hollander was extremely impressive on the Bearcats trip down south winning three of four singles matches and a pair of doubles victories.
BU hosts UMBC at Tioga Hills Elementary at 12 pm. The Bearcats have won eight of their last nine meetings against the Retrievers dating back to 2005.
