Women’s Tennis Cruises Past St. Bonaventure 7-0

Alexis Tashiro won in both singles and doubles on Friday

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y.—Binghamton (5-8) blanked hosts St. Bonaventure (5-9) 7-0 on Friday afternoon at SBU Fitness Center. The Bearcats won all eight matches over the Bonnies and collected their second sweep of the season (also defeated Colgate 7-0 back on March 2).

Agatha Ambrozy and Annie DiMuro got things started for the visitors, controlling the opening doubles match with an 8-2 win. The underclassmen have teamed up to win three of their last four doubles bouts. Sophomores Shea Brodsky and Alexis Tashiro sealed the doubles point with their 8-3 win and both collected their 10th win overall this season.

Brodsky had an impressive victory at sixth singles, shutting out her opponent 6-0,6-0; she is now 4-2 this season playing at sixth singles. Tashiro contributed heavily in BU’s win as well, grasping her second career victory at top singles. She powered past Marissa Brossard in three sets and improved to 6-7 this season in dual competition.

Junior captain Katya Medianik notched her second straight singles victory with a 3-6,6-2,6-0 win on Friday. Medianik now has nine wins in 2013-14 and 27 total for her career. Sophomore Sara Kohtz also pulled a three-set victory against SBU and elevated her record at second singles to 5-1.

DiMuro and Ambrozy continued their hot play against the Bonnies, tallying straight set wins from third and fifth singles, respectively. DiMuro, who now leads Binghamton with 16 wins this seson, defeated fellow freshman Maria Martinez-Santori 6-2,6-4; while Ambrozy claimed her fourth win in her last five dual matches with a 6-4,6-4 victory.

The Bearcats will hit the road once again over the weekend as they take on St. John’s this Sunday at 4 p.m.. The Red Storm are currently 5-6 this season and will entertain Providence on Saturday before taking on the Bearcats the following day.
