Cambridge, Mass.—A pair of Binghamton sophomores have landed a spot on the America East All-Academic squad as announced by the conference on Tuesday morning. Katya Medianik, who also was a first-team singles selection, receives this academic honor in her first year eligible. Joining Medianik is fellow classmate Missy Edelblum who had a team-high 3.448 GPA in English, Literature and Rhetoric.
“Both Katya (Medianik) and Missy (Edelblum) certainly are deserving of this honor,” head coach Libby McGovern said. “They do a terrific job of balancing both their work as an athlete and as a student in the classroom.”
Medianik wrapped up her sophomore campaign with a dual record of 3-17 in singles and 4-16 in doubles all from the top of the lineup. She recorded wins at first singles over Hartford and UMBC in straight sets late in the season. In the classroom, she carries a 3.425 GPA as a English, Literature and Rhetoric major and has been a member of the America East Academic Honor Roll each and every semester at Binghamton.
Edelblum went 3-12 overall and 2-9 in dual matches playing at the back end of BU’s singles lineup. The Roslyn, NY native collected five wins playing third doubles in 2013. She has 17 career doubles wins since joining the program last season. In addition to having the team’s highest GPA, Missy was also active this school year, working for the student newspaper and television groups on campus.
Since 2006, the Bearcats have had 10 selections to the All-Academic team. Last season, ’12 graduate Marina Bykovskaya became the first BU women’s tennis player to be named to the squad three consecutive seasons (both Medianik and Edelblum have opportunity with two more years of eligibility left). All honorees on the all-academic team must accumulate a GPA of 3.30 or higher and participate in over 50 percent of the team’s contests, all the while having a strong contributing role to the team.
