Columbia, MD—The Binghamton University women’s tennis team lost a tightly contested match to NJIT, 4-3, in the semifinals of the America East Tournament on Saturday afternoon. NJIT’s Natalia Melibeu clinched the match for the Highlanders with a three-set victory to advance to the finals where they will square off with two-time defending champions Stony Brook.

Binghamton took the first match of the afternoon, winning 8-2 from third singles. Sophomore Sara Kohtz and Katya Medianik picked up the victory, but BU couldn’t muster another win as NJIT reeled off a pair of wins to secure the doubles point.

Sophomore Agatha Ambrozy pulled the Bearcats even with a 6-2,6-0 straight set win from sixth singles. Ambrozy finishes her 2014 dual season with a record of 12-4 and 6-0 overall at sixth singles. BU pulled ahead one with Kohtz’s 6-1,6-0 win over NJIT’s Tripcovici. For Kohtz, that was win number 18 on the season.

NJIT jumped back ahead with a pair of wins at first and fourth singles to lead 3-2. Annie DiMuro lost a highly contested three-setter, losing 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 at the fourth spot in Binghamton’s lineup.

Alexis Tashiro evened the match at 3-3 with a 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-1 victory from third singles. Tashiro wrapped up her season at 8-10 in dual competition for the Bearcats.

With every match finished but one, NJIT was able to advance with their three set win from Melibeu. The first-year members of the America East will play Stony Brook on the campus of UMBC at 1 p.m. tomorrow.

Binghamton finished out their season with a dual record of 8-11 and made the semifinals for the 13th straight year. DiMuro led all Binghamton players with 19 singles and 13 doubles wins on the year. BU will not graduate anyone in 2014, returning all nine starters for the beginning of next fall.
