America East Release

Vestal, NY—The Binghamton women’s tennis team recently was recognized by the America East conference, garnering a cumulative 3.54 team GPA over the 2012-13 academic year— the highest of all women’s tennis teams competing in the America East this past season. This accomplishment marks the second consecutive year they have compiled the top GPA among their competitors in the America East.

“This academic acknowledgement is a product of a lot of hard work,” third-year head coach Libby McGovern said. “Committing themselves in practice, in the weight room and on long road trips for matches is a grueling task in itself. For them to take it a step further and excel in the classroom is outstanding to see. I’m very proud of our bunch and know they worked very hard to earn this recognition.”

This spring, six players earned a spot on the Binghamton AD Honor Roll, an honor which recognizes student-athletes with a GPA of 3.3 or higher. In addition, they swept the department’s Team Academic Cup in both the fall and spring semesters. Sophomores Katya Medianik and Missy Edelblum led the way, both being honored by the America East for their excellence in the classroom with All-Academic selections.

Binghamton student-athletes continued to build upon their tradition of strong academic performance this past year. For the 15th straight semester, the department-wide GPA eclipsed the 3.00 mark. With a total of 417 student-athletes, BU finished 2012-13 with a cumulative GPA of 3.10. An impressive 47 percent of these student athletes had a GPA of 3.3 or higher.
