Syracuse, N.Y.—With the team score knotted at three apiece, freshman Agatha Ambrozy gutted out a 6-3 win in the third set to secure the victory over Pittsburgh (3-3) Saturday morning from the Drumlins Tennis Center in nearby Syracuse. Binghamton (3-4) has won three of their last four matches, with their only setback coming Friday night versus Syracuse.
After losing the first doubles match of the morning, Binghamton bounced back with a pair of victories from their top two spots. Ambrozy and sophomore Katherine Medianik secured the team point with an 8-5 win at first doubles. The duo are a combined 3-2 this season playing together at the top of BU’s lineup.
Pittsburgh started strong in doubles play, winning from the first in sixth position in straight sets. Once again, Binghamton’s freshmen class stepped up big. Freshman Alexis Tashiro knocked off senior Gabrielle Cantanzariti in three sets after losing the opening frame 6-1. Tashiro went on to win 6-1, 6-2 and picked up her second dual victory of the season. Fellow freshman Sara Kohtz improved her singles dual match record to 4-3 with a straight set victory, setting up Ambrozy for the heroics later in the match.
The Bearcats return to action Sunday morning when they head to Providence, RI to take on No. 68 ranked Brown at 10 a.m.. The two teams have only met once in school history; which was last season (Brown defeated Binghamton 6-1).
