Baltimore, MD—The Binghamton women’s tennis team advanced to their 12th straight semifinals match at the America East Tournament on Friday with a 4-0 victory over Hartford at the UMBC Tennis Complex. Freshmen Sara Kohtz, Alexis Tashiro and Agatha Ambrozy made quick work of their opponents on the singles court, securing the match for BU with straight set wins.
In doubles play, sophomore Missy Edelblum and Kohtz cruised to an 8-1 victory at third doubles. They improved their record to 5-11 when paired together this spring. At second doubles, freshmen Alexis Tashiro and Shea Brodsky won the first seven points against Hannah Goldman and Jessica Galik and later moved on to win with a score of 8-2. Ambrozy and sophomore Katherine Medianik were ahead in their match 6-4 before the doubles point was decided.
Ambrozy blanked Hannah Greenberg, 6-0,6-0, securing her 6th dual victory of the season. The freshman from St. Petersburg, Florida reeled off multiple service aces on her way to BU’s second team point. Both Kohtz and Tashiro nearly had a similar result, winning in speedy fashion as they allowed just one Hartford point apiece. Kohtz picked up her fourth straight singles win and has won six of her last seven matches at either the second or third spot in the Bearcats lineup. Senior Jessie Rubin played solidly at sixth singles, coming up just a point shy of her second win of the season, leading 6-0, 5-1 before her match was called.
The Bearcats return to action on Saturday morning at the UMBC Tennis Complex when they take on first seed Stony Brook at 10 a.m.. The defending champion Sea Wolves have a record of 10-4 this season and recently beat Binghamton 4-0 in Vestal, NY back on April 6.
