West Point, N.Y.—Binghamton (1-1) won five of six singles matches on their way to a 5-2 victory over Sacred Heart on Saturday. The Bearcats got victories from three sophomores and a three set win from junior Katya Medianik that sealed BU’s first dual match victory of the season.
Behind 1-0 in team scoring, Binghamton stepped up and elevated their play in singles competition. Sophomores Agatha Ambrozy and Shea Brodsky got the Bearcats on the board with a pair of victories. Brodsky scooped up her first dual match win of the early season with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-0 win and Ambrozy improved to 2-0 this season with a straight set win over freshman Taylor Gurda at the sixth spot.
Now with the score at 2-1, BU increased their lead by claiming a victory from the third singles position. Sophomore Alexis Tashiro won handily by a score of 7-5, 6-2 over Lindsey Post. Following that win, Medianik put forth an outstanding effort at top singles with a match-clinching three set victory. She took down senior Gabi Kaldan in exciting fashion, defeating her after dropping the first set. She came back to win 6-4 in the second and finally overtook her with a 10-3 win in the final set.
Freshman Annie DiMuro rounded out the evening on a positive note for the Bearcats, taking down junior Nicole Rydzewski in a long lasting match. DiMuro outlasted her opponent, winning 6-7 (7-9), 6-4, 10-6, and in the process collected her first dual match win of her young collegiate career.
Sacred Heart grabbed the doubles point by taking two of three matches. Ambrozy and Brodsky lost a heartbreaker that sealed the point for SHU, losing 7-6 (7-4) in the third doubles position. DiMuro and sophomore Sara Kohtz claimed BU’s lone doubles win with the 6-3 advantage.
Seton Hall is next up on Binghamton’s schedule as they wrap up play at Lichtenberg Tennis Center on Sunday morning. The Bearcats faired well against the Pirates in last weekend’s Cornell Winter Invite, securing four singles wins over the three-day event.
