VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton wrestlers Matt Kaylor and Nick Gwiazdowski have been selected to the NWCA All-Academic Team for their academic and athletic achievements during the 2011-12 year.
Kaylor, a graduate student, earned a 3.4 grade-point average in his graduate coursework. He is pursuing a master’s degree in teaching with a concentration in social studies adolescent education. The four-year starter and two-time NCAA qualifier will leave the BU program with 112 career wins - tied for second in the program’s storied 42-year history. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history (3.12 GPA) and at 165 pounds this season, went 24-10, narrowly missing an NCAA berth.
Gwiazdowski, a freshman heavyweight, maintained a 3.0 GPA in Harpur College and put the hurt on opponents all season long. He went 30-9 in his first collegiate season and showed his mettle at the NCAA Championships by earning All-America honors with an eighth-place finish. Gwiazdowski won five matches and was one of just six “true” freshmen to become an All-American and the only heavyweight. He became the school’s first freshman to earn Division I All-America honors and the first freshman wrestler at any level to be an All-American in 29 years.
