Wrestling earns three podium spots at F&M Open

LANCASTER, Pa. - Junior heavyweight Tyler Deuel earned runnerup honors to head a group of three placewinners for Binghamton wrestling Saturday at the Franklin & Marshall Open. Joining Deuel on the podium were freshmen Nick Tighe (3rd at 133) and Nick Kelley (4th at 141).

Deuel advanced to the finals with three dominating wins. He opened with an 11-4 decision and then posted a 15-0 technical fall and a pin in the semifinals. In the championship bout, he suffered a 16-2 loss to Zach Merrill of Oklahoma.

Tighe won five of six bouts to place third. His offense clicked to the tune of 19, 17 and 10 points in his first three matches. Tighe then lost a tight 7-5 decision to the eventual champion (Tyler Fraley, Clarion) in the semifinals before winning his final two matches in the back draw. He posted a second-period pin in his first consolation match and then took third place with a 13-7 decision.

Kelley went 3-2 to place fourth. He reached the semifinals with a pair of decisions before dropping a 10-6 decision. Kelley then recorded a pin in his first consolation match before getting beat in the third-place match.

Junior 184-pound Caleb Wallace went 2-2 with a major decision before coming up short against the eventual champion and the third-place finisher to end his day.

Binghamton next competes in a dual at Columbia on January 10.
