HAMPTON, Va.—Competing in the 33rd edition of the prestigious Virginia Duals, Binghamton wrestling (3-7) split its opening two duals Friday at the Hampton Coliseum.

After opening the day with a 32-9 loss to No. 10 Virginia Tech, the Bearcats rebounded to beat VMI 31-13 and remain alive in the consolation bracket of the 16-team tournament. Binghamton will now face North Dakota State at 10 a.m. on Saturday. A win would advance BU to a 4 p.m. match while a loss would end their tournament.

Against second-seeded Virginia Tech, BU received wins from its nationally-ranked duo of Donnie Vinson and Nate Schiedel. Vinson, ranked No. 7 at 149, didn’t allow a takedown in a controlling 6-3 decision over No. 6 Nick Brascetta. In the process, he avenged a loss to Brascetta in the finals of the Midlands Championship two weeks ago.

Schiedel (17-2), ranked sixth in the country, pinned Derrick Borlie in 4:19, using a bear hug to drive Borlie to the mat in the second period and end the bout.

Binghamton lost a two-point and a three-point decision early and then surrendered back-to-back pins to the Hokies at 157 and 165 to let the score get away.

Binghamton rallied against VMI after an early deficit. The Keydets won three of the first five matches to take a 13-8 lead before BU stormed back by winning the final five bouts. Vinson racked up a 19-4 technical fall to improve to 20-1 overall, 10-0 in duals. Junior 184-pound Cody Reed also ended his match early with a 20-4 technical fall. Schiedel was given a forfeit win and remained unbeaten in duals (10-0). Sophomore heavyweight Tyler Deuel ended the match in fine fashion with a first-period pin - his team-high sixth of the season.
