PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Binghamton wrestling had a solid showing on Day 1 of the program’s first EIWA Championship, held Saturday at The Palestra on campus of Penn. The Bearcats advanced one wrestler to the semifinals and have five guys still alive heading into Sunday’s final day. The team is also in 10th place out of 18 schools with 41.0 points.

Fifth-seeded 197-pound Cody Reed punched his ticket to a third straight NCAA Championship (March 20-22 in Oklahoma City) in dramatic fashion. Trailing fourth-seeded James Fox of Harvard in the waning seconds, Reed secured a takedown and then put Fox to his back in overtime and produced his first pin of the season. By reaching the semifinals, Reed is assured of earning one of seven NCAA spots allocated to 197 pounders. Reed opened the tournament with a 14-5 major decision over Augustus Marker of Brown. He will face ninth-seeded Bryce Barnes of Army in Sunday’s semifinals.

Junior heavyweight Tyler Deuel, seeded third, notched two pins to remain in contention for a high place. Deuel pinned Nicholas Lupi (Sacred Heart) in 2:38 in his opening match but lost to sixth-seeded Max Wessell (Lehigh), 14-5, in the quarterfinals. Deuel then pinned Ryder Cavey of Brown in 3:07 in the wrestlebacks. He will face seventh-seeded Ray O’Donnell (Princeton) in the fourth round of the consolations Sunday morning.

Junior 125-pound David White, seeded sixth, won two of his three matches to keep his NCAA tournament hopes active. White opened with an 8-2 decision before losing 4-1 to third-seeded Jamie Franco (Hofstra) in the quarterfinals. He rebounded to post a 3-1 win over eighth-seeded Sean McCabe (Rutgers) and will need one more win to secure a top-6 spot and NCAA berth. He will face Boston’s Chris McGinley on Sunday.

Junior 184-pound Caleb Wallace, the eighth seed, earned a 14-5 major decision to reach the quarterfinals. After being knocked into the consolations with a loss to the top-seed, Wallace earned a 6-4 decision over James Mannier (Navy) to advance to Sunday. He will next face Brett Harnier of Princeton.

Unseeded sophomore 165-pound Vincent Grella won three matches to earn another day of action. Grella opened with an 8-0 pigtail decision and then received a forfeit win to reach the quarters. After a loss to the No. 4 seed, Grella battled for a 3-2 win over Rustin Barrick (Bucknell) to stay alive. He will face eighth-seeded Mitchell Wightman (Boston) Sunday morning.

Binghamton’s other five wrestlers bowed out with two straight losses apiece.

Sunday’s action begins at 10 a.m. with the championship finals set for 4 p.m.
