VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton wrestling produced three placewinners at the Penn State Nittany Lion Open, held Sunday at Rec Hall. The non-scoring Open featured wrestlers from 10 ranked teams including No. 5 Penn State, No. 8 Pittsburgh, No. 10 Lehigh, No. 13 Maryland, No. 14 Virginia Tech, No. 16 Rutgers, No. 19 Central Michigan, No. 20 Kent State, No. 23 Virginia and the No. 25 Bearcats.
Junior 149-pound Donnie Vinson, ranked ninth in last week’s Intermat poll, won five matches to reach the finals. There, he was pinned by Penn State’s Frank Molinaro, the top-ranked wrestler in the nation. Vinson notched three major decisions and a pin on the day. In the semifinals, he decisioned Andrew Alton of Penn State, 8-6. Vinson raised his overall record to 15-2.
Sophomore 197-pound Cody Reed went 4-2 to place seventh. He scored two major decisions to improve to 12-3 on the season.
Freshman 141-pound Derak Heyman won four matches to place eighth. Heyman, who is redshirting this season, won three straight decisions to reach the quarterfinals. He then added another decision in the wrestlebacks.
Freshman 141-pound Joe Bonaldi won a pair of matches and nearly put together a very good day before a pair of narrow losses ended his tournament. Bonaldi lost 4-2 in sudden victory to the eventual runnerup and then was eliminated with a 3-2 setback in the consolation bracket.
The Bearcats (7-0) only entered three starters in the event, resting most before the entire team heads to Nevada for the Reno Tournament of Champions on December 18.
