VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton University wrestling scored a big victory off the mat on Thursday when the Bearcats were accepted into the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) beginning in the 2013-14 season.
The EIWA is the oldest and one of the most prestigious conferences in the country and in gaining membership, BU will wrestle alongside such elite programs and institutions as Harvard and Cornell. The EIWA announced today that it will add four teams to its current membership (14) for next season, and earning invitations along with Binghamton were Hofstra, Drexel and Boston University – all previously aligned with the CAA.
“We are honored to have our wrestling program invited for membership in the EIWA,” Director of Athletics Patrick Elliott said. “The EIWA represents scholarship and athletic achievement on a national level and we are excited to compete alongside such renowned institutions and wrestling programs.”
The composition of the EIWA features six Ivy League and five Patriot League members. The current 14-school membership is: American, Army, Brown, Bucknell, Columbia, Cornell, Franklin & Marshall, Harvard, Lehigh, Navy, Penn, Princeton, Rutgers, Sacred Heart.
“This is monumental on a number of levels,” head coach Matt Dernlan said. “Academically, it speaks volumes about Binghamton as an institution and President Stenger’s vision moving forward that we are seen as ‘in line’ with some of the most elite private schools in the country. From a wrestling standpoint, to be viewed as adding value to one of the most powerful wrestling conferences in the country speaks to what the future holds as we progress as an emerging national power.

“We are grateful for the efforts of Greg Strobel, executive director of the EIWA and Associate AD at Lehigh, as well as other administrators and members of the committee. We also are indebted to Steve Erber, current Cornell administrator (and founder and former coach of Binghamton wrestling). Steve’s been instrumental leading the charge on our behalf, and it took many hours and months of deliberations to make this a reality.”
The EIWA has crowned 88 individual NCAA champions in its storied history, which dates back to 1905. The conference held its 109th championship this past March at Rutgers, and the strength of the conference has resulted in 50 NCAA automatic berths being allotted to member schools in 2012-13 (45 automatic). That number of qualifiers was second only to the Big Ten and was more than double the allotments given to the CAA. The EIWA crowned 13 All-Americans in 2012 and had three teams finish in the NCAA top-10 (Cornell, American, Lehigh) in 2011. Cornell has captured the last seven EIWA titles.
The 2014 EIWA Championship will be hosted by Penn and the Bearcats will be eligible to compete for NCAA berths and the team title immediately.
“The EIWA Championship is one of the premier NCAA qualifiers in the country,” Dernlan added. “It will be a great challenge - one we’ve positioned ourselves for – and an opportunity to move Binghamton wrestling forward on the national scene. What better platform to do that than at arguably the second-most competitive qualifying tournament in the country, behind only the Big Ten.”
The Bearcats will likely add many of the EIWA members to the team’s dual match schedule for the upcoming seasons.
“We’re excited to forge new relationships and grow new rivalries with some of the premier institutions in the Northeast.”
Binghamton has churned out 21 NCAA qualifiers in the last four years.

Going the Distance
During his four years at Binghamton, Ryan Walter was always one of the fittest players on the men’s soccer team. Each summer, he won the preseason fitness run by a substantial margin. So it was little surprise to any of his teammates when he decided to run the Hudson-Mohawk Road Runners Club Winter Marathon in March.
“I have always wanted to run a marathon just to experience it,” he said. “It seemed to be a great a challenge, especially for me since I am not a big runner to start with. Other soccer alum before me like Kyle Kucharski and Chris Terry also ran a marathon after their senior season. Really, it was just a challenge that I wanted to test myself with.
Walter started training for the February 19 event, which was held at the University of Albany, in December. His farthest training run was 20 miles but most of his runs were about 6-10 miles.
With his soccer career having ended, Walter continued to train on his own for the marathon while the Bearcats trained for the spring season. The rest of the team had little doubt that he would do well come race day.
“Ryan is one of the fittest guys I have ever had the pleasure of playing with,” Marts Reid-Warden said. “Every fitness test, he always set the bar high for the rest of the players so I wasn’t surprised at all when I heard he was running a marathon.”
“He pushes himself and excels at everything he does,” Trey Jasenski said. “So I knew he would do well.”
“Every year I was here, he always won the (two-mile) Cooper Test,” Jake Keegan said. “So I figured he was running about 13 Coopers.”
The night before the race, Walter stayed with Jasenski and his family outside out Albany.
“Trey and his family supported me the whole weekend of the race,” Walter said. “They were very gracious and allowed me to stay with them the weekend of the race. They made sure I was well fed and rested. I am very grateful for their hospitality and support.”
Walter clocked a time of 3:12.06 in his marathon debut. Jasenski, meanwhile, figured he would be done in about three hours and had planned to meet him at the finish line. That did not, however, go exactly as planned.
“I dropped him off and then we tried to figure out where the finish line was three hours later,” Jasenski said. “We were holding up signs, running around looking for him and finally found him and he looked…..dead.”
:I was very happy with my time especially it being my first time and a sporadic training schedule,” Walter said. “I was very relieved to cross line. Overall it was a long process and the effort paid off.”
Walter’s hard work at Binghamton paid off in several ways. In addition to being a two-year team captain and two-time, second team all-conference selection, he graduated magna cum laude and landed a job at PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Looking back, Walter has found memories of his years with the Binghamton men’s soccer program.
“BU soccer was a fantastic experience,” he said, “Truthfully, the program has become like family for me. I greatly value all the friends and relationships that have made my time at BU something that I will always look back on with a smile. Coach Marco’s dedication to the team is outstanding. The amount of time and effort he puts into watching film and scouting teams is tremendous. His ability to prepare the team for an opponent is something that I have not had in any other coach.”
As for the current Bearcats, Walter is a teammate who helped them in many ways.
“He always worked for everyone,” Jasenski said. “He always pushed himself and set the standard for everyone else around him.”
“He is one of those guys who is always competitive and always wants to win,” Keegan said. “Everyone can learn from his competitive attitude on the field.”

America East Tournament Release
Contact: John Hartrick (hartrick@binghamton.edu)
ALBANY, N.Y.—Sophomore left fielder Jake Thomas punctuated his incredible regular season with a pair of two-run home runs to lift visiting Binghamton (27-22, 16-13 AE) to a 10-3 win over Albany (23-23-1, 16-14 AE) in the regular-season finale for both teams Saturday afternoon. With the win, BU claimed regular-season runnerup honors and will carry the No. 2 seed into the America East tournament.
Thomas, the leading hitter in the America East, was walked twice but still went 3-for-3 with four RBI to pace a 13-hit BU attack. Thomas will carry a .524 on-base percentage (No. 3 in nation) into the postseason and leads the conference with his .374 average.
With the winner of the rubber game earning the No. 2 seed, the Bearcats got on the board immediately courtesy of Thomas. With one out in the first, freshman infielder David Schanz singled and Thomas followed with a two-run shot over the right field fence.
The Great Danes got one run back in the bottom of the frame after a hit batter, sacrifice and single.
But Thomas struck again in the third, following a Schanz one-out walk with another two-run blast - his team-high fifth of the season. His RBI count rose to a team-high 36 with the big day at the plate.
Ahead 4-1, BU added two more runs in the fifth inning. Junior center fielder Billy Bereszniewicz and sophomore right fielder Zach Blanden hit back-to-back singles and after a Schanz bunt moved them 90 feet up, Bereszniewicz scored on a wild pitch to push the Bearcats’ lead to 5-1. After Thomas was intentionally walked, junior third baseman Brian Ruby scored Blanden with an RBI groundout.
Binghamton put it away with four runs in the eighth inning on four hits. Thomas walked to open the inning and stole second. Ruby then hit an RBI double down the right field line, making it 7-1. Senior first baseman Jordon Smucker added a one-out RBI single and Bereszniewicz joined the barrage with a two-out, two-run double.
Albany put up two runs on three hits in the bottom of the eighth to finish the scoring.
Senior Jay Lynch (W, 6-4) worked four innings and allowed five hits and one run. He lowered his ERA against conference opponents to 2.28.
Freshman reliever Jake Cryts tossed three scoreless innings in relief, giving up just one hit in a strong showing. Two other BU relievers finished out the game.
Ruby went 2-for-5 with two RBI to continue his hot streak. He has seven RBI in his last 12 games. Bereszniewicz went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Blanden also collected two hits. Thomas finished up league play with some big numbers: In 29 league games, he hit .416 and had a .546 on-base percentage with 18 RBI.
NOTES
Binghamton and Albany will play for the fourth time in five days when they meet in Wednesday night’s opening-round 8 p.m. matchup at LeLacheur Park in Lowell. It will be a rematch of last year’s first-round game which saw the third-seeded Bearcats post a 2-1 win over the second-seeded Great Danes. Top-seeded Maine will face defending champion Stony Brook in the 4 p.m. game. The tournament is a double-elimination format with the winner earning the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA tournament. The Bearcats captured the America East title in 2009 and are the only AE team to finish in the regular season top-3 in each of the last seven years.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton men’s tennis coach Adam Cohen has been named the ITA/Wilson Northeast Region Coach of the Year after guiding his Bearcats to a sixth straight NCAA tournament berth in 2013. It’s the second time in the last four years that Cohen has earned the top honor in the 39-team region, which spans 11 different conferences.
Under Cohen’s leadership, the Bearcats (16-10) won 11 of their last 12 matches before facing No. 2 Georgia in the NCAA tournament. With a powerful recruiting class in place, Cohen put two freshmen in his top two singles positions and only had one upperclassman in his singles lineup, yet still produced 16 wins and the program’s ninth NCAA berth in the last 11 years. In 2010, Cohen was also selected by his Northeast Region peers after his Bearcats went 25-2 and were ranked as high as No. 43 in the country.
Additionally, freshman standout Sid Hazarika was selected as the ITA/Wilson Northeast Region Rookie of the Year. Hazarika put together an exceptional spring season after coming to campus in January. He went 21-4 in singles, occupying the No. 1 position, and was named the America East Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year. It’s the first time that a BU player has earned the region’s top rookie honor in the program’s 12-year Division I tenure.
“I am happy for Sid to receive Rookie of the Year honors for our region,” Cohen said. “He began his career for us in the spring, which is never an easy starting point for anyone as you only have about one week of formal practice with the team and then we begin our spring season. I had Sid play lower in the lineup at the beginning as I wanted him to get some matches under his belt to gain some confidence and get used to college tennis. As he kept winning his matches I kept moving him up until he took over our top spot towards the end of March right before we went on spring break. To have an overall spring season record of 21-4 is a great accomplishment and I look forward to having Sid continue to improve his level next season and the years to come here at Binghamton University.”

VESTAL, N.Y. – Sophomore Jesse Garn and senior Jessica Hennig will compete at the NCAA East Regional Track & Field Meet, which will be held May 23-25 at North Carolina A&T. The Bearcat duo qualified the meet by being ranked in the top 48 in the East Region in their respective events during the current outdoor campaign.
Garn, who qualified in the 800 last year, is ranked No. 26 in the men’s 1.500 this spring. His top time of 3:44.76 came when he won the America East title on May 5.
Hennig, meanwhile, is ranked No. 46 in the women’s 400. Her top time of 54.35 also came at the America East Championships on May 5, where she was the runner up.
“We are really excited to have Jesse and Jessica at regionals next weekend,” head coach Mike Thompson said. “We knew Jesse was going to get in but Jessica was still up in the air until the final declarations came out.”
The top 12 finishers in each event at the NCAA East Regional Meet will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held June 5-8 at the University of Oregon. Also advancing to the NCAA Championships will be the top 12 finishers from the West Regional Meet, which will also be held May 23-25 at the University of Texas.
There will be two rounds of each event at the NCAA East Regional Meet. The preliminaries of the men’s 1,500 are May 23 at 6 p.m. The finals, meanwhile, take place May 25 at 6:45 p.m. The women’s 400 preliminaries are May 23 at 7:20 p.m. with the finals taking place the following day at 6 p.m.
“Jesse has a good shot at making it to the NCAA Championships while Jessica will try to improve her school record and break 54 seconds,” Thompson said.
At the 2012 East Regional Meet, Garn had the seventh-fastest time in the 800 preliminaries (1:48.85) but dipped to 23rd in the finals (1:51.60). Earlier that season, he was third in the 1,500 at the America East Outdoor Championships.
Garn’s appearance marks the third straight year the Bearcat men’s program will have an entry in the 1,500 at the NCAA East Regional Meet. Erik van Ingen, advanced all the way to the NCAA Championships in the same event the previous two years.
Hennig continues her prolific career with her first trip to the NCAA East Regional Meet. She has won three conference indoor titles in the 400 during her career and also captured the individual title at the 2012 America East Outdoor Meet.
This past weekend at the ECAC Championships, Hennig joined with juniors Kathleen Klein and Erika Kisel and sophomore Ivory Taussig to smash the Binghamton program’s 4x400 record. Their time of 3:44.26 shaved a full three seconds off the previous 2007 mark of 3:47.47.
NOTE: Hennig’s time of 54.35 at the America East Outdoor Championships is the current school record.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton baseball (26-22, 15-13 AE) split a doubleheader with host Albany (23-22-1, 16-13 AE) Friday afternoon with the Bearcats taking the opener in extra innings, 3-2 (9) and the Great Danes earning the split with a 5-4 win in the seven-inning nightcap.
The split, combined with a split in the Hartford-Stony Brook games, means that BU and Albany are assured the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds for the upcoming America East tournament, with the winner in Saturday’s rubber game taking the No. 2 spot. Regardless, the teams will now square off in the first game of the tournament next Wednesday in Lowell, Mass. It will be the second straight year the Bearcats and Great Danes will meet in the opening round.
In the opener, junior center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz led off the ninth inning with a single, stole second, went to third on a sacrifice bunt and scampered home with the deciding run on a two-out wild pitch. Sophomore reliever Greg Ostner (W, 2-1), worked around a single in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win. Ostner pitched 5.0 scoreless innings in a brilliant relief effort. He kept the Bearcats alive by inducing a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play in the eighth frame and scattered five hits in the longest outing of his career.
The Bearcats trailed 2-0 before scoring single runs in the fifth and sixth innings of the scheduled seven-inning game. Once the game extended to the ninth inning, Game 2 was re-set for seven innings.
Albany scored two unearned runs on just one hit in the first inning against senior starter Jake Lambert (4.0 IP, 3 hits, 0 ER), whose single and hit batter were compounded by an infield throwing error. But Lambert allowed nothing further before being removed in the fifth to keep fresh for the upcoming conference tournament.
After leaving four runners stranded in the first four innings, BU got on the board in the fifth. With two out, sophomore right fielder Zach Blanden and freshman third baseman David Schanz hit back-to-back singles and sophomore left fielder Jake Thomas plated Blanden with an RBI single up the middle. One inning later, the Bearcats evened the score with another two-out rally. Junior first baseman Brian Ruby singled with one out and went to second on a walk. With two outs, Bereszniewicz delivered an RBI single to left field, scoring Ruby.
Schanz led off the seventh with a single but was stuck on the bases - BU left 11 stranded in the game and 19 for the day.
In the eighth, Ostner allowed a leadoff single and the Great Danes had the winning run at second after a sacrifice bunt. But BU’s strategy of intentionally walking the next batter worked to perfection as Ostner got the ensuing double play to get out of the inning and set up the deciding run in BU’s next at-bat.
Bereszniewicz went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Blanden, Schanz and Ruby each went 2-for-4.
In Game 2, Albany snapped a 4-4 tie with the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning - thanks to a leadoff walk, balk and RBI single. The game featured four lead changes.
Binghamton took a 1-0 lead on a Ruby RBI single in the third before Albany scored three runs (two unearned) on three hits in the bottom of the inning. The Bearcats got one back in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from senior catcher Mike Danaher, who was making his first appearance since March 30 after an injury sidelined him for 24 games. Then BU took a 4-3 lead with two runs in the fifth inning. Ruby ripped an RBI double down the left field line and later scored on an infield throwing error. But Albany countered with a run in the bottom of the fifth to tie it at 4 and won it an inning later.
Ruby went 2-for-4 with two RBI and senior first baseman Jordon Smucker went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Junior starter Jack Rogalla scattered seven hits and two earned runs in 5.0 innings. He struck out four and walked none in a no-decision. Sophomore reliever Mike Urbanski (L, 2-1) was saddled with his first loss of the season after working the sixth inning.
NOTES
Thomas reached base five times in the two games to bump his on-base percentage up to .512, which ranks in the nation’s top-5… The winner of the Stony Brook-Hartford game on Saturday gets the final spot in the four-team championship, which will be held next Wednesday through Saturday, May 22-25, at LeLacheur Park in Lowell. That winner will play regular season champion Maine in the other first-round game on Wednesday.

Cambridge, Mass.—A pair of Binghamton sophomores have landed a spot on the America East All-Academic squad as announced by the conference on Tuesday morning. Katya Medianik, who also was a first-team singles selection, receives this academic honor in her first year eligible. Joining Medianik is fellow classmate Missy Edelblum who had a team-high 3.448 GPA in English, Literature and Rhetoric.
“Both Katya (Medianik) and Missy (Edelblum) certainly are deserving of this honor,” head coach Libby McGovern said. “They do a terrific job of balancing both their work as an athlete and as a student in the classroom.”
Medianik wrapped up her sophomore campaign with a dual record of 3-17 in singles and 4-16 in doubles all from the top of the lineup. She recorded wins at first singles over Hartford and UMBC in straight sets late in the season. In the classroom, she carries a 3.425 GPA as a English, Literature and Rhetoric major and has been a member of the America East Academic Honor Roll each and every semester at Binghamton.
Edelblum went 3-12 overall and 2-9 in dual matches playing at the back end of BU’s singles lineup. The Roslyn, NY native collected five wins playing third doubles in 2013. She has 17 career doubles wins since joining the program last season. In addition to having the team’s highest GPA, Missy was also active this school year, working for the student newspaper and television groups on campus.
Since 2006, the Bearcats have had 10 selections to the All-Academic team. Last season, ’12 graduate Marina Bykovskaya became the first BU women’s tennis player to be named to the squad three consecutive seasons (both Medianik and Edelblum have opportunity with two more years of eligibility left). All honorees on the all-academic team must accumulate a GPA of 3.30 or higher and participate in over 50 percent of the team’s contests, all the while having a strong contributing role to the team.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Maine (31-19, 18-8 AE) squandered a 5-1 lead in the late innings but batted around in the 10th and scored eight runs en route to a 13-7 win over Binghamton (25-21, 14-12 AE) in the second game of a twinbill Sunday afternoon from the Bearcats Sports Complex. The visiting Black Bears took the opener 4-3 and won two of the three games in the hotly-contested series, which featured a pair of one-run games and an extra-inning affair.
Despite the two losses, BU clinched its seventh straight postseason berth. The Bearcats assured themselves of a top-4 finish in the America East standings heading into next weekend’s three-game set at Albany. Because the two teams directly behind them in the standings (Stony Brook and Hartford) play each other in the final series, BU will maintain a higher win percentage regardless of that series outcome.
The two games on Sunday were tightly contested with Maine hanging on to beat BU in the opener and then going to extra innings to win the nightcap, which featured a combined 28 hits, 20 runs and nine pitchers. In game 2, Binghamton erased a 5-1 deficit with two runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth to force extra innings. The Bearcats scored twice in their final at-bat and came within a foot of winning the game in the bottom of the ninth when sophomore left fielder Jake Thomas hit a liner that was snared by the Maine first baseman with the winning run set to score from third. Before that, BU tied the game on an RBI single from freshman third baseman David Schanz and a wild pitch.
But Maine sent 13 men to the plate in the 10th and rapped seven hits, including three doubles that went to the wall in dead center. Binghamton plated two in their half of the 10th on a Scott Musin double but it wasn’t enough.
A long way back in the nearly four-hour game, Maine hit back-to-back solo home runs to open up the second inning and build an early lead. Black Bears starter Shaun Coughlin limited BU to four hits - just one after the third inning - in 7.0 innings. Binghamton cut its margin in half when junior second baseman Daniel Nevares belted a solo shot over the right field wall in the bottom of the second. Nevares took the first offering and sent it over the right field wall for his second home run of the season. A weak double-play grounder ended the frame and stranded a runner.
The Black Bears countered with two more runs in the third - both scoring with two out. A walk, stolen base and hard-hit grounder that caromed off starter Jay Lynch scored the first run. Then with runners on first and third, Lynch appeared to have both runners picked off but couldn’t pull the trigger on the throw, and his ensuing 0-2 pitch turned into an RBI single and a 4-1 Maine cushion. Lynch got a groundout to get out of a bases-loaded jam.
The Bearcats threatened in the bottom of the third when they loaded the bases with two out. Nevares jumped on an 0-2 pitch and came with a few feet of a grand slam when his shot carried just foul in the left field corner. Nevares then popped out to center on a 3-2 pitch to stall the threat.
Freshman Jake Cryts worked 3.2 solid innings in relief of starter Jay Lynch (4 runs in 4.1 IP) and stemmed the tide by allowing just two hits and a run. Cryts came in with a runner on second in the fifth and after a stolen base, worked out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts. He retired seven straight and nine of his first 10 batters before a wind-aided double and single gave Maine an insurance run, up 5-1.
Binghamton plated two in the eighth courtesy of a Nevares two-run double and then forced extra innings with a dramatic ninth.
Nevares wound up 2-for-4 with three RBI. Schanz went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Thomas went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
In the opener, Maine snapped a 3-3 tie with a two-out solo home run in the sixth inning. Number six hitter Brian Doran hit Jack Rogalla’s 2-1 offering over the wall in right field for his first home run of the season.
The Bearcats put their leadoff runner on in the bottom of the seventh when Nevares drew a walk. He went to second on a sacrifice bunt but a groundout and fly out ended the game.
Binghamton built a 3-1 lead but missed a few chances to stretch the lead in the early innings and the Black Bears scored runs in three straight frames to complete the comeback win.
The Bearcats opened the scoring with two runs in the second. Junior shortstop John Howell walked with one out and BU then strung together three straight singles. Sophomore catcher Nick Pancerella started by lining a 3-2 pitch into left field. With runners on first and second, junior center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz laced a 3-2 pitch to left center, scoring Howell with the game’s first run. Sophomore right fielder Zach Blanden followed with an RBI single to center field. Maine avoided further damage when its right fielder made a diving catch on a sinking liner from Schanz.
The Black Bears got on the board in the fourth with a one-out double, stolen base and sacrifice fly.
But BU struck again in the bottom of the frame. Howell opened with a double just inside the bag at third. After moving to third on a sacrifice bunt by Pancerella, Howell scored when Bereszniewicz drilled a hot shot up the middle. That hit chased Maine’s starting pitcher. Binghamton was denied more when Blanden’s hard hit to short turned into a double play.
Maine tied it with two runs on three hits in the fifth. The Black Bears stole two bases in the inning - the second of which kept them out of what could’ve been an inning-ending double play - and used a bloop single and an RBI groundout to even the score.
The Bearcats loaded the bases on two singles and a walk in the fifth but a foul fly to right ended the threat. Binghamton then put two runners on with two out in the sixth but a strikeout stranded both.
Binghamton outhit Maine 11-9 but left 10 runners stranded in seven innings.
Bereszniewicz went 2-for-3 with two RBI, Blanden went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Nevares went 2-for-3.
Rogalla (L, 4-4) scattered nine hits and four runs in 7.0 innings. He had three strikeouts and walked two.
NOTES
Maine (18-8) has clinched the regular season title. Albany (15-12) moved a half-game ahead of BU and into second place and also clinched a postseason berth. Stony Brook (13-14) and Hartford (12-15) will battle it out for the other playoff spot with essentially the winner of their three-game series earning the berth. The 2-4 positions are still up for grabs heading into the final weekend of the regular season. The America East Championship will be held May 22-25 in Lowell, Mass… Thomas hit .455 in the series (5-for-11) and kept his sizzling on-base percentage above .500 (.510, top-5 in NCAA)... Nevares had two extra-base hits and three RBI in the series… Blanden had five hits and three RBI.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Freshman third baseman David Schanz singled in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Binghamton baseball a 4-3 win over visiting Maine Saturday afternoon from the Bearcats Sports Complex. The win, coupled with an Albany loss, moved the Bearcats (25-19, 14-10 AE) into second place in the America East standings, just two games behind Maine (29-19, 16-8 AE). The teams will finish up their three-game set with a doubleheader Sunday beginning at noon.
In the 10th, junior center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz led off with a sharp single through the right side. Then after fouling off two bunt attempts, sophomore right fielder and lead-off hitter Zach Blanden instead ripped a single through the left side, putting runners on first and second with no outs. Maine was expecting a bunt and began an infield shift, which Schanz promptly spoiled by drilling the first offering into right center for an RBI single. The speedy Bereszniewicz came home from second with the winning run.
The Bearcats trailed 3-1 in the seventh inning before three straight two-out hits tied the score. Sophomore catcher Nick Pancerella began the rally with a single through the left side. Bereszniewicz followed with single to right field. Blanden delivered the big hit with a two-run double to the corner in left field. Junior second baseman Daniel Nevares nearly gave BU the lead when his first-pitch drive in the bottom of the eighth stalled at the wall in left field as the wind disappeared.
Sophomore Mike Urbanski (2-0) earned the win after entering in the top of the 10th and stranding Maine’s go-ahead runner on second. Urbanski came all the way back from a 3-0 count to strike out the Black Bears’ dangerous designated hitter and then got the final out of the frame on a line-out to Schanz at third. Urbanski came in for sophomore Greg Ostner, who pitched 3.2 strong innings of middle relief. Ostner entered the game on a moment’s notice after reliever Anthony Grillini left suddenly with an injury after facing just three batters in the sixth. He scattered three hits and a run and struck out three. Ostner pitched a 1-2-3 eighth and then worked out of a two-on jam in the ninth amid steady rain. With runners on first and second, he got the Black Bears’ cleanup hitter to ground out to first, preserving the tie.
The Black Bears accumulated nine hits in the first five innings and used single runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. The Bearcats cut their deficit in half with a run in the fourth. Binghamton loaded the bases with one out and junior shortstop John Howell brought in sophomore left fielder Jake Thomas with an RBI groundout. Thomas had opened the inning with an infield single. Bearcats’ starter Jake Lambert escaped a dicey fifth inning when Maine loaded the bases with two infield singles and a walk. But Lambert induced a comebacker on a 3-2 pitch to strand three on base. He departed after allowing two runs in 5.0 innings.
Maine made it 3-1 with a one-out solo home run in the top of the seventh.
Blanden went 2-for-4 with two RBI, Schanz had two hits and the game-winning RBI and Thomas and Bereszniewicz had two hits apiece. Thomas reached base in three of four plate appearances to raise his league-leading on-base percentage to .513 - one of the top-5 marks in the nation.
The Black Bears, who lead the America East with a .299 team batting average, outhit BU 12-10 but stranded 11 runners. With the two runs in the seventh, BU knocked out Maine starter Tommy Lawrence, who was bidding for his ninth straight win.
NOTES
Maine (16-8) still sits atop the America East standings, followed by Binghamton (14-10), Albany (14-11), Stony Brook (12-13) and Hartford (11-15). The top four teams at the end of next weekend’s play (final 3 games) advance to the conference tournament, held May 22-25 in Lowell, Mass. Binghamton would clinch a playoff spot with one more win or one more Hartford loss.

Binghamton-Stony Brook Box Score
VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton’s most successful softball season in nearly two decades came to an end on Friday afternoon with a pair of losses on the second day of the America East Tournament. The Bearcats (30-17) fell 4-2 to top-seeded Albany in the winners’ bracket before being eliminated 9-0 by Stony Brook later in the day. The three-day event, which is being held at the Bearcats Sports Complex, will conclude on Saturday when Albany and Stony Brook meet in the championship round.
“It’s disappointing to end our season like this,” head coach Michelle Burrell said. “I told our players that this is something we will learn from for next year. We came out and played well against Albany but we didn’t do a good job in the elimination game.”
In the first game, the Bearcats took a 1-0 lead on a RBI single by Lisa Cadogan in the top of the first inning. The Great Danes, however, tied the score in the bottom of the frame on a RBI single by Annie Johnson.
Kylie Apostolina put Albany up 2-1 with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning but freshman designated hitter Tiffany McIntosh matched her in the top of the third inning. It was a two-run home run by Charlise Castro in the bottom of the third inning, however, that was the decisive blow of the game.
The Bearcats left two runners on base in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Brittany MacFawn improved to 28-7 with the win while junior pitcher Demi Laney fell to 15-7 with the loss.
Freshman outfielder Sydney Harbaugh and junior second baseman Jessica Bump each finished with a pair of hits. Harbaugh scored on Cadogan’s single in the first inning.
In the elimination game, things unraveled quickly for the Bearcats as the Seawolves scored five time in the top of the first inning. With the Bearcats committing a pair of errors, Stony Brook needed only two hits in that frame. The big blow was a three-run triple by Gina Bianculli.
The Bearcats settled down over the next two innings before Stony Brook plated four more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Olivia Mintun drilled a three-run home run and Shayla Giosa scored the final run on a fielding error.
Allison Cukrov tossed a one-hit shutout to improve to 13-15 on the season. It marked the first and only time that the Bearcats were shut out all season. Laney took the loss again in the elimination game. Six of the Seawolves’ runs were unearned.
Harbaugh led the Bearcats with a .429 average during the tournament, going 3-for-7 at the plate. Bump and senior outfielder Jessica Phillips each finished 3-for-8 (.375). Phillips was the only Bearcat player to hit safely in all three games.
Binghamton finishes the season with their highest win total since recording a program-record 37-8 mark during the 1995 season. In addition, Binghamton’s .293 final team batting average is its highest mark since moving up to the NCAA Division I level in 2002.
NOTES: Harbaugh and Phillips were both named to the America East All-Tournament Team.

VESTAL, N.Y. – Host Binghamton (30-15) scored six times in the bottom of the sixth inning en route to a 7-1 win over Hartford (21-33) in an America East Tournament first-round game on Thursday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the victory, the Bearcats advance to the winners’ bracket in the double-elimination tournament and will face Albany on Friday at 11 a.m.
Binghamton had been held to just two hits through the first five innings against the Hawks. That all changed in their final offensive inning of the game, as the Bearcats stroked a pair of doubles and three singles to break open the game.
“I thought we kept our composure during the game,” head coach Michelle Burrell said. “We came out tight but were finally able to approach our at-bats a lot better later in the game.”
Sophomore shortstop Caytlin Friis gave the Bearcats a 1-0 lead when she doubled home junior third baseman Mikala King. Melani Maxwell, however, tied the game in the top of the fifth inning with her third home run of the season.
King got the sixth inning started with a one-out double. Two batters later, she was singled home by freshman pinch hitter Griffin McIver.
Freshman outfielder Sydney Harbaugh made 3-1 when she drew a bases-loaded walk. After a RBI single by freshman designated hitter Tiffany McIntosh stretch the lead to 4-1, fellow freshman Lisa Cadogan drove in another run on a sacrifice fly. Senior outfielder Jessica Phillips then finished the scoring with a two-run double.
Senior pitcher Kate Price improved to 6-4 with the win while Zuzana Kudernatschova took the loss and is now 14-13. Starting pitch Demi Laney went the first five innings, scattering one run on five hits and striking out four batters.
Phillips now has 122 career RBI. That ties her for first place all time in program history with Deannie Plemon (2008-11).
Binghamton has reached the 30-win total for just the second time in school history and the first time during its 12-year NCAA Division I era. Back in 1995, the then Colonials went 37-8.
Earlier in the day, Albany defeated Stony Brook 4-0 in the other first-round game. The Seawolves and Hawks will square off in an elimination game at 1:30 p.m. The losers of the first two games tomorrow will then meet in another elimination game at 4 p.m.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton men’s tennis departed from campus Wednesday afternoon en route to Athens, Ga. and the NCAA Regionals. The Bearcats (16-9) will face University of Georgia (22-4) at 1 p.m. on Friday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Wake Forest and Northwestern play in the opening match at 10 a.m. The host Bulldogs are ranked No. 2 in the nation and will be highest-ranked opponent BU has faced in its Division I history.
“We have prepared for Georgia the way we have for any other match,” said head coach Adam Cohen, five-time America East Coach of the Year. “They are obviously very good at every spot on the lineup. We will need to come out and play smart, with energy and leave it all on the court. Their facility is a great setting for college tennis and we’re excited to be there. We will need to start playing well from the very first point in doubles and make them feel it will be a dogfight. Our guys have to be ready mentally and play every point like it’s the last point. The guys are confident and we expect to play hard and give them the best match we can.”
Binghamton earned its sixth straight NCAA berth after capturing another America East title. The Bearcats will be making their ninth NCAA appearance in the last 11 years.
The Bearcats are led by two freshmen at the top of the singles lineup. First-year standout Sid Hazarika (21-3) was crowned the America East Player and Rookie of the Year after producing a remarkable spring season. Hazarika beat two top-10 regional players and went 10-1 after taking over the top singles position in late March. He also plays at the top doubles spot alongside the team’s lone senior, Bastian Bornkessel.
The rest of BU’s starting lineup includes freshman No. 2 Alexander Maisin (18-15), sophomore No. 3 Robin Lesage (20-11), sophomore No. 4 Ismael Dinia (17-13), junior No. 5 Ruben Haggai (22-9) and sophomore No. 6 Florian van Kann (11-9).
Haggai, the Most Outstanding Player at the America East Championship, has rattled off 14 consecutive wins. He pairs with freshman Eliott Hureau at the No. 2 doubles spot and Lesage and Dinia form BU’s third doubles team. Dinia is a team-best 18-11 in doubles this season.
Georgia, the reigning SEC champions, has won 13 matches in a row and 17 of its last 18. The team is making its 35th overall appearance in the tournament and 30th straight. Georgia reached the NCAA quarterfinals in 2012, and has reached the finals in three of the last seven seasons. In all, the Bulldogs own six NCAA championships, most recently winning in back-to-back seasons in 2007-08.
But the hosts took a hit on Wednesday with the announcement that the team’s top player, senior KU Singh, has left the team in the eve of the NCAA tournament. Singh was the nation’s fourth-ranked singles player. His departure means that everyone bumps up in the Bulldogs’ lineup, which still boasts three ranked singles players and two ranked doubles tandems.

America East Tournament Media Day Interviews
VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton’s banner year on the softball field has resulted in a record number of annual honors from the America East Conference.
Freshman first baseman Lisa Cadogan has been named the conference’s Rookie of the Year while head coach Michelle Burrell was tabbed as the Coach of the Year. The Bearcats earned a conference-best and program-best five first-team selections. They also led the America East with six total all-conference selections, four all-rookie selections and four all-academic selections.
“I think all of our players are very deserving of the awards and I am glad they have received the recognition,” Burrell said. “Our success so far this season has been a true team effort, from starters to players coming off the bench either in a pinch hit, pinch run or relief pitching situation.”
Joining Cadogan on the first team is junior second baseman Jessica Bump, freshman outfielder Sydney Harbaugh, freshman designated hitter Tiffany McIntosh and junior pitcher Demi Laney. Senior pitcher Rhoda Marsteller was named to the second team.
Cadogan, Harbaugh and McIntosh were joined by freshman catcher Taylor Chaffee on the All-Rookie Team. Bump and Marsteller were joined by senior outfielder Jessica Phillips and junior third baseman Mikala King on the All-Academic Team.
Cadogan currently ranks sixth in the America East with a .343 batting average, is fourth with eight home runs and is tied for third with 36 RBI. She was named the conference’s Rookie of the Week on March 11 and March 25 and was tabbed the Player of the Week on March 18. Cadogan is the second Binghamton player to be named the America East Rookie of the Year. Phillips won the award in 2010.
Burrell is in her fourth year as the head coach of the Bearcats. She has an overall record of 98-86 and has led the Bearcats to four straight seasons of at least 22 victories. During that stretch, Binghamton has qualified for the America East Tournament twice.
Bump ranks fifth in the America East in batting (.348), second with 10 home runs and is also tied for third with 36 RBI. In addition, she leads the conference with 45 runs, five triples, an on-base percentage of .480 and a slugging percentage of .681. Bump was named the America East Player of the Week on April 22. Two years ago, she was named to the conference’s All-Rookie Team.
Laney finished the regular season with a 15-6 record. In the process, she broke the program’s single-season record with 164 strikeouts. She recorded a career-high five shutouts and was the America East Pitcher of the Week on April 15. Laney is the first Binghamton pitcher since Michelle Weeks in 2003 to be named first-team all-conference.
Harbaugh ranks eighth in the conference with a .314 batting average and is third with 25 stolen bases. She was named the America East Rookie of the Week on Feb. 18.
McIntosh is tied for fifth in the America East with seven home runs and ranks seventh with 33 RBI. She homered twice this past weekend in the series against Albany.
Marsteller is currently 9-5 and has tossed a career-high four shutouts this season. In 2010, she was named to the America East All-Rookie Team.
Chaffee currently ranks third in the conference with nine home runs and is sixth with 34 RBI. She was named the America East Rookie of the Week on April 8, April 15 and April 29.
To be eligible for America East All-Academic honors, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in academic standing, have at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA, and have appeared in at least 50 percent of the team’s games. Bump and Phillips are repeat selections from 2012. King and Marsteller each finished the regular season with three home runs and 21 RBI.
Binghamton (29-15) is the host school for the upcoming America East Tournament which runs May 9-11 at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Bearcats open up the double-elimination event against Hartford at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.
NOTES: Cadogan, Harbaugh and McIntosh are the first three Binghamton freshmen ever to have earned first-team all-conference honors from the America East … prior to this season, the most first-team all-conference selection the Bearcats had was two, on three separate occasions. Most recently, Phillips and Deannie Plemon were named to the 2011 first team … the six America East all-conference selections and four all-rookie picks are also program records. The Bearcats have had four all-conference picks four times. Most recently, Plemon, Phillips, current junior infielder Lisa Cutrona and Meghan Tucker were tabbed in 2011. Binghamton had two All-Rookie selections four times with Bump and Cutrona being the most recent selections in 2011.

VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton volleyball program will welcome four new additions to campus this fall for the 2013 season, head coach Glenn Kiriyama announced Wednesday. After capturing their third America East title last November, the Bearcats will look to defend its title with freshmen Bianca Anderson, Allison Hovie, Kelly Leach and Bailey Walker. Binghamton, a relatively young team in 2012, will lose just three seniors to graduation in May, Alex Roland, Iva Partaleva and Jordyn Suhr.
Arriving to Binghamton in August will be Bianca Anderson (Columbus, Ohio), Allison Hovie (Neenah, Wis.), Kelly Leach (Sayville, N.Y.) and Bailey Walker (Bayport, N.Y.). The four incoming freshmen will join seniors Xiomara Ortiz and Grace Vickers, juniors Amanda Dettmann, Kristin Hovie and Alexa Zbytniewski and sophomores Megan Burgess and Shannon Kirkpatrick. Junior-transfer Meghan Kraus will also join the Bearcats for the 2013 season after arriving at Binghamton last fall and playing with the team during the spring season.
“Our 2013 recruiting class has a nice mixture of volleyball experience,” Kiriyama said. “Bailey and Kelly have solid all-around ball control skills and will be great benefit to our service reception and back row defense. Allison and Bianca are gifted athletes and will be immediate contributors to our offense this coming year. We are glad to have them join our team and looking forward to have their drive and enthusiasm permeates our gym.”
Bianca Anderson (Middle Hitter/Outside Hitter) won three letters at Westland High School in Columbus, Ohio. The 6-foot-1 middle hitter was a team captain her senior season and led her squad in kills, blocks and attack percentage. She was named a second-team Ohio Captial all-conference selection and her team’s MVP last fall. As a junior Anderson led Westland in kills, blocks and points garnering All-OCC honorable mention honors.
Allison Hovie (Outside Hitter) is a three-year letterwinner for Neenah High School and is the younger sister of current Binghamton sophomore Kristin Hovie. The 5-foot-9 outside hitter is a three-time All-Conference selection including an All-State selection as a senior. She helped lead her team to a fifth place finish in WIAA Division I State Tournament and led Neenah to the Fox Valley Association title. The school’s all-time record holder for aces with 167 also compiled 872 kills and 837 digs during her three-year career. Hovie played her club ball with the Wisconsin Volleyball Academy.
Kelly Leach (Oustide Hitter/Defensive Specialist) is a four-year letterwinner at Sayville High School. The senior captain was a two-time All-Suffolk County selection and earned national honors from the AVCA as the Player of the Week for New York last September. Leach was also named to the Suffolk County All-Tournament team as a junior and a senior. Leach, a three-time scholar-athlete, also competed in basketball and lacrosse.
Bailey Walker (Libero/Defensive Specialist) is a five-year letterwinner for Bayport Blue Point High School. The two-year captain was named All-League in 2009 and 2011 and All-Conference in 2010 and 2012. The 5-foot-5 libero was named the League VII Player of the Year after leading her team to the best record in the conference. Walker is also a four-time All-League and two-time All-State selection for the track and field team. She helped her 4x400 team capture the 2012 New York State title while earning the Section XI Sportsmanship award. Walker is a member of the Long Island Volleyball Academy.
Binghamton will seek back-to-back America East titles when they begin camp in August. The Bearcats return three starters from their championship squad including reigning Co-Setter of the Year Amanda Dettmann and tournament Most Outstanding Player Grace Vickers.

Vestal, NY—Junior golfer Bryce Edmister was recently picked as the Team MVP at the 66th Annual Varisty Awards Program last week by head coach Bernie Herceg. This is the second straight MVP award for Edmister who just finished 10th out of 60 individuals competing at the America Sky conference tournament.
In total, Edmister had six top-10 finishes in 2012-13 to pace the Bearcats. The junior lefty posted back-to-back runner-up finishes this fall, taking a second-place standing at Binghamton’s home event and at the Philadelphia Big-5 Invitational just days afterwards. At the Big-5, Edmister came up just one stroke shy of winning his first event with a 36-hole total of 146 (+6). Additionally, he held a narrow lead after two rounds at the season-ending America Sky Championships, but fell to 10th after a final round 77. His second round lead was the first time a BU player has held a share or outright lead at the event since the Bearcats’ inception into the league back in 2007.
In back-to-back years, Edmister has held the team low for scoring average. This season, he carried a 74.5 mark in 11 tournaments played. He had six rounds of par or lower this calendar year and the Bearcats used his score over 92 percent of his rounds played towards their team score. In three seasons with the program, Edmister has ten top-10 finishes dating back to 2010.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Junior second baseman Daniel Nevares went 2-for-3 with a double and a three-run home run and Binghamton baseball (24-19, 13-10 AE) completed a three-game sweep of visiting Hartford (14-31, 11-13 AE) with an 8-2 win Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The win moved BU to within a half-game of second-place Albany in the America East standings and kept the Bearcats 2.5 games clear of fifth place as teams battle for a top-4 playoff position in the final two weeks of the regular season.
Up 2-0, Nevares smoked an RBI double to the wall in left center to key a two-run sixth inning and then delivered his first homer of the season one inning later. With one out and runners on second and third, Nevares jumped on a 1-0 pitch and sent it into BU’s bullpen beyond the left field wall, extending the Bearcats’ lead to 8-0.
Hartford tallied two runs in the ninth to complete the scoring.
Senior right-hander Jay Lynch (5-4, 2.48 ERA) stifled the Hawks over eight shutout innings before departing in the ninth. Lynch wound up scattering seven hits and two runs and struck out five. He didn’t walk a batter. Sophomore Mike Urbanski got the final three outs.
Hartford threatened to go ahead in the first inning when the visitors hit Lynch’s first offering for a single and moved the runner to second on a sacrifice. But on the ensuing single to center, junior outfielder Bill Bereszniewicz threw out the runner at the plate and Lynch stranded the remaining runner with a fly out.
Binghamton struck for a run in the second on a leadoff double to the wall in left center by junior DH Shaun McGraw and an RBI single just inside the bag at first by junior first baseman Brian Ruby. In the fourth, BU doubled its lead with two hits and two walks. Nevares walked and McGraw laced a single to right center. Ruby walked to load the bases with one out and junior shortstop John Howell hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Nevares and making it 2-0.
Lynch worked out of a jam in the sixth when Hartford put together back-to-back singles with one out . But Lynch got an infield pop-up and a foul pop-up to third to strand two and keep the shutout.
In the sixth, sophomore left fielder Jake Thomas led off with his second hit of the game and Nevares plated him with his team-high 16th double of the season. After McGraw’s infield single, Ruby ripped a shot up the middle to score Nevares and make it 4-0.
Bereszniewicz (single) and sophomore right fielder Zach Blanden (walk) opened the seventh by getting on base and freshman third baseman David Schanz dropped down a sacrifice fly, that was promptly thrown away at first by the Hawks pitcher, allowing BU’s fifth run to score. After an out, Nevares then sent his shot over the wall to cap the Bearcats’ outburst. Nevares then added a defensive gem to his game highlights. In the Hartford eighth, Nevares ranged up the middle to snare a grounder, spun and fired to first for the putout.
Binghamton outhit Hartford 11-7.
McGraw went 3-for-4 and Ruby went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI to compliment Nevares’ big day.

Binghamton starting pitcher Demi Laney held the Great Danes scoreless through the first 5.1 innings. With two outs in the top of the sixth inning however, Charlise Castro reached on a single to left field. One batter later, Alcorn delivered her decisive blow, which landed just inside the left field foul pole.

“I thought we played really well defensively,” head coach Michelle Burrell said. “Unfortunately, we just did not put together good at-bats today. We will look to make an adjustment and have a better approach in the box for the tournament.”

VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton men’s tennis swept the major awards after capturing the program’s sixth straight America East championship. Head coach Adam Cohen was tabbed by his peers as conference Coach of the Year and freshman phenom Sid Hazarika was a unanimous choice for both Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year.
In his seventh year at Binghamton, Cohen garnered his fourth straight Coach of the Year award and fifth overall (2008, 2010-13). He guided the Bearcats to a 16-9 overall mark and a sixth straight conference crown. Binghamton extended one of the America East’s longest current title streaks with a 4-0 win over host UMBC on April 28. The Bearcats now head to Athens, Ga. to face second-ranked Georgia in the NCAA first round on May 10.
Hazarika came to campus in January and proceeded to steamroll to a 21-3 overall record, including a 10-1 mark up at the top singles spot. He knocked off two top-10 regionally ranked foes and also added 11 doubles wins playing at No. 1.
Joining Hazarika on the all-conference first team were junior Ruben Haggai, Robin Lesage and Alexander Maisin. Hazarika and his partner, senior Bastian Bornkessel, were selected first team in doubles, as were Lesage and his partner, sophomore Ismael Dinia.
Dinia earned second team all-conference recognition, as did the doubles tandem of Haggai and freshman Eliott Hureau.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Sophomore catcher Nick Pancerella delivered a one-out walk-off infield single in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Binghamton baseball (23-19, 12-10 AE) a dramatic 6-5 win over Hartford (14-30, 11-12 AE) and a sweep of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon from the Bearcats Sports Complex. Binghamton won the seven-inning opener 3-2.
With the bases loaded and one run already in, Pancerella hit a smash to the left side of the infield that the Hartford third baseman couldn’t flag down. Junior Daniel Nevares raced home with the winning run, setting off a celebration at the plate and at first around Pancerella. The Bearcats trailed 5-4 entering their final at-bat in the tenth inning before rallying.
Sophomore left fielder Jake Thomas (3-for-4, RBI) got things started with a crisp single up the middle on the very first pitch of the inning. He moved to second on a wild pick-off throw and Nevares drew a walk. Freshman pinch hitter Reed Gamache dropped down a perfect bunt and the Hawks pitcher tried to get the force at third but Thomas was on the bag safe. Junior first baseman Brian Ruby plated Thomas with the tying run on a sacrifice fly to right. Junior shortstop John Howell was then intentionally walked to load the bases, setting up Pancerella’s winning hit.
Sophomore reliever Anthony Grillini (4-0, 3.81) earned the win with 5.2 innings of strong work. Grillini allowed just two hits and a run in relief of junior starter Jack Rogalla. Grillini struck out seven and walked one.
Hartford outhit BU 10-3 and built a 4-1 cushion before the Bearcats scratched out three unearned runs on just one hit in the seventh. After being shut down on one hit through six innings by Hartford starter Brian Hunter, BU took advantage of the pitching change. The seventh inning included a hit batter, walk, botched play on a bunt and wild pitch before freshman third baseman David Schanz made it 4-3 on a sacrifice fly. With two outs and the tying run on third, Thomas delivered in the clutch, ripping a 1-1 pitch up the middle for an RBI single and a 4-4 tie.
After scoreless eighth and ninth innings, Hartford plated the go-ahead run in the 10th on a one-out double and a two-out RBI single into shallow right center that resulted in a disputed play at the plate.
But the Bearcats struck for the deciding runs off the Hawks’ closer in the bottom of the frame.
In the opener, BU trailed 2-0 before a bases-clearing double off the bat of Nevares turned the tide in the fifth inning. Senior ace Jake Lambert went the distance and scattered six hits and one earned run. Lambert (5-2, 3.80) retired the side in order in four of seven innings and stranded the potential tying run on second in the seventh to close it out.
The Bearcats put runners on in every inning but stranded five before cashing in on the Nevares hit in the pivotal fifth. Junior center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz led off and reached after getting hit. After a line-out, Schanz dropped a perfect bunt down toward third, putting runners on first and second. Thomas then hit a sharp shot to deep short and reached with the infield single to load the bases. Nevares then lashed a 1-1 pitch to the wall in right center, clearing the bases.
Hartford put its leadoff runner on in the sixth but Lambert got a shot to third that Schanz snared and fired back to first to complete the double play. In the seventh, Lambert got his fifth strikeout and after the two-out double, Lambert forced a fly out to right to end it.
Nevares went 2-for-3 with the three RBI and Schanz went 3-for-3.
NOTES
Maine (15-7) and Albany (14-9) split their doubleheader to retain the top two positions in the America East standings. The Bearcats (12-10) jumped ahead of Hartford (11-12) into third place. Stony Brook (10-13) and UMBC (6-17) split their twinbill, leaving BU 2.5 games clear of Stony Brook for a top-four tournament position. There are seven conference games remaining for each team.

VESTAL, N.Y. – Freshman designated hitter Tiffany McIntosh homered twice and junior pitcher Demi Laney won her 15th game of the season as Binghamton (29-14, 14-3 AE) split a doubleheader against Albany (34-13, 14-2) in an America East softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Bearcats won the opener 3-1 but fell short in the nightcap 3-2. Sunday’s noon game, therefore, will determine the conference’s regular-season champion.
Binghamton’s 29 wins is its most since going 29-12 during the 1999 season. In addition, the victory in the first game extended the Bearcats’ win streak to a season-high nine games.
Laney, who improved to 15-5, has now recorded the highest win total by a Binghamton pitcher since Margaret Yerdon also won 15 games during the 1999 season. Against the Great Danes in the opener, Laney scattered one run on four hits and struck out eight batters.
McIntosh jump started the offense with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. Three innings later, junior third baseman Mikala King made it 3-0 with a solo home run.
Alexa Toole broke the shutout with a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning. Laney, however, retired four of the final six batters to preserve the victory.
The loss was tagged to Brittany MacFawn, but she would start off the second game with a vengeance. She had a no hitter through three innings and held Binghamton to just four hits in the nightcap.
Offensively, Maggie Cocks was credits with a pair of RBI on a fielder’s choice in the top of the third inning, giving Albany a 2-0 lead. One inning later, Lindsey Stout made it 3-0 with a RBI single.
McIntosh struck again in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two run home run. The Bearcats, however, left two men on base at the end of the inning. From there, MacFawn retired six of the last seven batters, raising her record to 25-7.
The loss was tagged to Rhoda Marsteller, who is now 9-5.
Freshman outfielder Sydney Harbaugh hit a team-best .500 during the doubleheader. She went 2-for-4 with a walk. McIntosh and senior outfielder Jessica Phillips both went 2-for-5 (.400).

Cambridge, Mass—Three Binghamton University women’s tennis players were named to the all-conference squad as announced by the America East on Friday morning. Sophomore Katya Medianik was a first-team singles player, while freshmen Sara Kohtz and Alexis Tashiro rounded out the second-team for BU. Conference champions Stony Brook swept the major awards, winning Player of the Year (Nini Lagvilava), Rookie of the Year (Jackie Altansarnai) and Coaching Staff of the Year.
“I’m very happy for all three of our girls for making the all-conference team,” head coach Libby McGovern said. “It’s an awesome honor and shows just how impressed coaches around the league felt of their play. Having not one, but three underclassmen on this list just shows how bright our future can be and I am definitely looking forward to watching us grow as a program.”
Medianik, a sophomore from Brooklyn, NY played atop the Bearcats lineup all season for third-year head coach Libby McGovern. As a team leader, Medianik won three dual matches at singles this 2013 campaign, two coming against Hartford and UMBC’s top singles player. She has 18 career singles wins over her short career and was recently named team MVP at the annual Varsity Awards Banquet.
Kohtz performed solidly in her first season with BU by way of Chicago, Illinois. She won a team-best 14 singles matches, including a record of 10-8 in dual matches. She went a combined 10-4 from the second and third singles positions, claiming four straight wins to close out her freshman season at third singles.
Tashiro played anywhere from 2-4 in BU’s singles lineup this season; performing exceedingly well as a newcomer. The Jamaica, NY native carried a record of 6-14 in dual play this season. Her best play came at second singles where she had a 3-7 mark this spring. In a 4-0 win over Hartford in the America East Quarterfinals, Tashiro won on both the singles and doubles court to secure the Bearcats their 12th straight trip to the conference semis.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior Katherine Hunsberger made history today, becoming the first-ever Binghamton women’s lacrosse player to be named to the America East all-conference first team and back-to-back All-Academic teams, as announced by the conference Thursday evening at the annual awards reception held on the campus of Stony Brook University, the site of the 2013 Women’s Lacrosse Championship. Freshmen Allie Rodgers and Erin McNulty also garnered all-conference recognition, each being named to the All-Rookie team.
Hunsberger, a four-year letterwinner, finished her 2013 campaign first or second on the team in almost every major statistical category. The senior captain was first in goals (35), points (36) and draw controls (76) and second in ground balls (20) and caused turnovers (10). Hunsberger completed the year second in the conference in draw controls per game (5.43) and seventh in goals per game (2.50).
“I couldn’t be more proud of Katherine being honored by the America East for both her efforts on the field and in the classroom,” interim head coach Stephanie Allen said. “Her relentless dedication to reaching her goals as a student-athlete is unparalleled. Her contributions to this program are immense and she is incredibly deserving of these accolades.”
Hunsberger started all 14 games for the Bearcats and ended the season ranked among the nation’s top 10 in draw controls. She found the back of the net in every game of 2013 and concluded her career on a 17-game goal streak dating back to April 2012. The standout midfielder netted seven hat tricks including four in a row to end the year for a career total of 13.
During her final season as a Bearcat the Cortland, N.Y. native etched her name in the Binghamton record books setting the all-time program record for draw controls with 152. Hunsberger surpassed Lauren Wetherell’s (2003-06) total of 135. Her 76 draw controls broke her own single-season school record of 51, which she set last year. Hunsberger also finished her illustrious career fifth all-time in program history with 83 goals.
As dynamic as she is on the field, Hunsberger was just as prolific off being named to her second straight America East All-Academic Team. Hunsberger maintains a 3.65 GPA as a integrated neuroscience major and is a three-time America East Honor Roll selection. She is just the third Bearcat to be named to the All-Academic team and the first to earn the honor twice.

Binghamton placed a pair of newcomers on the America East All-Rookie team for the second time in program history. McNulty and Rodgers join Ali Castiglie and Lisa Illig (2008) as the second Bearcat duo to earn all-conference recognition in their first year of eligibility. The pair of rookies are the 10th and 11th Binghamton freshman to garner the honor.
McNulty started 10 games in goal for the Bearcats finishing the season with 96 saves. The highly touted freshman from Holbrook, N.Y. led Binghamton with 22 ground balls while causing five turnovers out of net. McNulty was named Rookie of the Week on March 25 after helping the Bearcats halt a 14-game losing streak with a 10-7 win over Siena.
Rodgers played in all 14 games for the Bearcats, getting 10 starts. The first-year player from Baldwin, N.Y. scored 10 goals and handed out three assists for the fourth highest point total on the team. Rodgers recorded three multi-goal games from her midfield position while picking up eight draw controls, seven ground balls and four caused turnovers.
“Erin and Allie are also very deserving of these honors and I hope there are many more to come for these young ladies,” Allen continued. “Both are tremendously hard workers and will be staples in continuing to build this program. They immediately made an impact on the field for us this year and I’m excited to see them reach their potential as student-athletes here at Binghamton.“
Binghamton finished the season 2-12, but picked up its fourth America East victory since joining the league in 2002 with a 7-6 win over Vermont in late March.

VESTAL, N.Y.—VESTAL, N.Y. – Binghamton University honored its student-athletes at the 66th Annual Varsity Awards Program Thursday night at the Events Center. More than 400 students, staff, families and supporters were on hand as the department unveiled its 2012-13 award winners. The event was streamed live on BU’s website for the seventh straight year. The evening also included a Senior Recognition Dinner and culminated with the annual highlight video, produced by former soccer player and webmaster Elsan Dzudza ‘98.
Four senior student-athletes spoke during the two ceremonies: track athlete Ashley AuPont, soccer player Trey Jasenski, basketball player Taylor Johnston and volleyball player Alex Roland.
Voice of the Bearcats Roger Neel served as master of ceremonies and University President Harvey Stenger and Director of Athletics Patrick Elliott offered remarks.
“You will have incredible memories,” Stenger said in his opening remarks to the senior class. “You will have friends for life … friends you will stay connected to throughout your life. Come back and be part of our tradition moving forward and be proud of what we all have accomplished. Congratulations!”
“This is the culmination of a lot of years of hard work at one of the finest academic institutions in the country,” Elliott said in his welcome. “As you celebrate your academic and athletic accomplishments, make sure you thank those people who helped you get to where you are tonight… We wish you all the best … always be a Bearcat.”
“Leaving home (Texas) was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done,” senior speaker and volleyball player Alex Roland said, about choosing to come to Binghamton. “Coach Kiriyama pushed me to reach high expectations and the entire athletics department was like a family. My experience taught me how to stay true to myself and I will represent the University forever. I’m just fortunate Binghamton chose me.”
“Cherish what you have here,” soccer player Trey Jasenski said in his comments at the podium. “Make your bonds stronger ... you don’t want to look back and ask ‘What if?’”
The major winners included Athletes of the Year Donnie Vinson (wrestling), Jessica Bump (softball) and Grace Vickers (volleyball). Other seniors earning recognition for their career achievements were soccer player Jake Keegan, Vinson, softball player Jessica Phillips and volleyball player Alex Roland. The full list of award winners is below.
2012-13 Athletes of the Year

Heading into the final weekend of the regular season, she leads the America East Conference in runs, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and triples. She is also tied for second in home runs and is tied for third in runs batted in. Two weeks ago, she broke the program’s single-season record for runs in a season. “I would like to thank the Yeardley Love Foundation for considering me in a group of such great players, but even more importantly great people,” Warner said. “If I was able to portray the characteristics of Yeardley during my time here at Binghamton, than I know that I had a positive influence on my teammates.”
Warner joins four other male athletes in the running for the award. The four other finalists joining Shane hail from Cornell, Loyola Univ., North Carolina and Ohio State. The Tomkins Cove, NY native fully demonstrates what the award is all about. A captain and team leader on the Bearcats, Warner has been a student-athlete who exhibits class and integrity both on and off the field. A standout two-way player on the lacrosse field, he also makes the university proud with his contributions in the classroom and the community.
Currently boasting a cumulative 3.80 GPA as a double major in History and Comparative Literature, Warner has made the dean’s list each and every semester at Binghamton. Recently, he was chosen to be part of the America East All-Academic squad and has been inducted into numerous honor societies that include: The Phi Beta Kappa Society, Chi Alpha Omega National College Athlete Honor Society and the Sigma Alpha Lambda National Leadership and Honors Organization.
In the community, Shane has devoted numerous hours to giving back. He’s been both a camp counselor and volunteer coach at numerous lacrosse camps in his spare time over the summer. This past fall, he was a mentor in the College For Every Student program, giving students from West Middle High School in Binghamton, NY the tutoring and encouragement needed to succeed in the classroom.
His biggest contribution may have been this past summer when he visited Uganda for two weeks with the ‘Fields of Growth’ lacrosse program. Warner helped teach youngsters about the game of lacrosse in daily clinics, coached the Ugandan national lacrosse team in training sessions and most importantly volunteered his time to making a difference. Shane and a handful of other student-athletes visited orphanages, schools and towns in need to provide any assistance. He helped continue the construction of the ‘Hopeful School’ in Masaka, which provides education to children in need. Since returning from his trip, he has stayed committed to the cause by giving back. Earlier this semester, he and his Binghamton teammates donated over $600 to the organization in a fundraising effort.

San Antonio, TX—Binghamton held put on Wednesday, finishing in seventh place at the America Sky golf conference championships at the Dominion Country Club. With a 54-hole total of 900, the Bearcats fell 29 strokes behind the conference champions from Houston Baptist. Junior Bryce Edmister couldn’t hold on to a second round lead as he finished alone in 10th place with a score of 218 (+2).
BU shot a final round 299 (+11) at the par 72 course in San Antonio; remaining in 7th place the entire duration of the round. The Bearcats bested five schools at tournament’s end, but fell short of qualifying for the NCAA team bid which went to the Huskies of Houston Baptist. The Huskies trailed second round leaders Southern Utah by a mere stroke and rallied on Wednesday besting the conference newcomers by four strokes on the day and three overall. Individual medalist honors went to Sacramento State’s Jordan Weir. Weir stayed a stroke clear of Houston Baptist’s Preston Stanley with a 54-hole total of 213 (-3).
Edmister started the round off in shaky fashion, bogeying the second hole, birdying the third and recording a quadruple bogey on the par 4 fourth hole. The ‘quad’ knocked him from first place to seventh place. The junior went on to play the next 11 holes at one-under, including back-to-back birdies on 14 and 15. Unfortunately, the Webster, NY native was unable to knock down his score any further as he recorded bogeys on two of his last three holes. Despite a 77 on Wednesday, Edmister still racked up his sixth top-10 finish of the season. He finishes 2012-13 with a team-best scoring average of 74.5
Senior David Cellura turned in a good tournament to finish up a successful four-year career at Binghamton. Cellura shot a 78 on Wednesday, earning a 27th place finish at the Dominion, tying with three others at 226. He ends his career with four top-10 finishes and ten in the top-20.
Sophomore Jack Sedgewick had BU’s best round on Wednesday with a final round 73 (+1). Sedgewick made three birdies on the front on his way to a 35 (-1) and closed out his round with a birdie at the par 5 18th—a hole he recorded a four on two of the three days.
Freshman Jesse Perkins shot a 74 to finish tied in 43rd place with teammate Josh Holling. Perkins played brilliant golf, playing the Dominion at one under through 17. However, on the 18th hole, the freshman failed to stay in red numbers as he took an eight on the par 5 last hole.
The Bearcats had a terrific 2012-13 campaign, winning three events and placing in the top-5 in six. They finished with a team scoring average of 229.8—- good for fourth lowest in program history. Edmister led the way with six top-10 finishes, followed by four from sophomore Josh Holling who was the individual medalist at the Cornell Invite this past fall.

Cambridge, Mass.—Junior midfielder Michael Antinozzi and freshman defender Chris Bechle were picked as second-team All-Conference selections as announced by the America East conference on Wednesday evening. In addition, BU had a pair of All-Academic honorees in senior Shane Warner and junior Garrett Augustyn.
“We’re all just really proud of all four of these guys,” second-year head coach Scott Nelson said. “They have put in a ton of time and hard work on the field and all are good guys and student-athletes. It’s nice they get to be recognized for their strong contributions to our team this past season.”
For the third straight season, Michael Antinozzi has been honored by the conference with his second-team selection in 2013. The junior midfielder made the All-Rookie team in 2011 and was one of two BU players to make the first-team a season ago. Antinozzi finished second on the team with 20 goals this spring, and also added five assists for the Bearcats who wrapped up the season at 5-9 and 1-4 in conference games. The Fallston, Maryland native had a pair of hat tricks this season out of the midfield and recorded a point in each and every game. At season’s end, he also finds himself near the top of nearly all offensive program records. He ranks first in shots (299), tied for second in goals (66), is second in hat tricks (9) and lastly fourth in points (90).

Freshman Chris Bechle becomes the first BU freshman to make an all-conference first or second-team since 2007 (Steve Carlson). Bechle, who also makes the All-Rookie squad as well, started all 14 games for head coach Scott Nelson. The newcomer from Fairport, NY finished second on the team in caused turnovers (13) and picked up 14 ground balls on the backline. He helped guide Binghamton to the lowest Goals Against Average (10.18) in the conference—a full goal lower than Stony Brook.
Senior midfielder Shane Warner headlines the All-Academic team for the Bearcats. The four-year letterwinner played in all 14 games, making 10 starts as a key component on both offense and defense for BU. He scored a pair of goals and added two assists in 2013, and finished fourth on the team in ground balls with 26. Shane has the second highest GPA on the all-academic squad with a 3.79 GPA double majoring in History and Comparative Literature.
Defender Garrett Augustyn joins Warner on the All-Academic squad in 2013. Augustyn made 11 starts, appearing in all 14 games as a long stick midfielder for the Bearcats. He led the team in caused turnovers with 18 and was third on Binghamton with 29 ground balls. With a cumulative GPA of 3.39 in Geography/Urban Planning, the three-year starter becomes the 14th BU player to receive such an honor.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Visiting Siena (20-24) jumped out of the gate with seven runs in the first two innings and went on to a 10-3 win over Binghamton (21-19) in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday afternoon from the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Bearcats outhit Siena 11-6 but the Saints used two home runs to pin a third-straight loss on BU.
Siena assembled three walks, a wild pitch and dropped infield pop-up to score four unearned runs in the first inning - with a bases-clearing double doing the primary damage. One inning later, Siena went to the long ball. After back-to-back singles up the middle, a three-run home run over the wall in left field stretched the Saints’ lead to 7-0.
Binghamton threatened throughout the game but couldn’t mount a strong rally. The Bearcats loaded the bases in three different innings but left nine runners stranded in the first six frames and had two more erased on double plays. The hosts got on the board with two runs on three hits in the sixth inning but left the bases loaded. Siena got another run in the seventh and two more in the ninth courtesy of a two-run home run. Each team used six pitchers as they conserved arms for their respective stretch runs in conference play.
In BU’s sixth, junior third baseman Brian Ruby got things going with a two-out walk. Senior first baseman Jordon Smucker followed with a single to center and running hard, Ruby took third with some aggressive running. Smucker moved to second on the throw. Sophomore catcher Nick Pancerella hit an RBI single up the middle, scoring Ruby with BU’s first run. Junior center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz then hit an RBI single through the left side scoring Smucker. Sophomore right fielder Zach Blanden drew a walk to load the bases and freshman shortstop David Schanz hit a sharp liner that appeared headed for a run-scoring hit but the Siena right fielder made a diving catch to save two runs.
The Bearcats loaded the bases again in the eighth but produced just one run. Ruby led off with a single, Pancerella hit a one-out single and after a Bereszniewicz walk, Blanden plated Ruby with a sacrifice fly to center field. An infield pop-up left two more stuck on the bases. Binghamton had 12 left on base for the game.
Junior second baseman Daniel Nevares went 3-for-5 to pace the offense. Pancerella went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Smucker also went 2-for-4. Sophomore Greg Ostner and freshman Mike Bunal keyed a solid middle-inning pitching performance as four different hurlers allowed no earned runs over six middle innings. Ostner yielded just one hit in his two-inning stint and Bunal didn’t allow a hit in his two innings.
Binghamton faces a key three-game home series with Hartford this weekend. The teams are separated by a half-game in the standings with the Hawks (11-10) clinging to third place and BU (10-10) giving chase and looking to fend off Stony Brook (9-12) in the process. The top four teams advance to the America East tournament.

ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior pitchers Rhoda Masteller and Kate Price as well as junior pitcher Demi Laney combined to throw a pair of shutouts, leading Binghamton (28-13) to a 7-0, 1-0 sweep over Cornell (21-29) on Wednesday afternoon. With the wins, the Bearcats tie their season high with eight straight victories.
Heading into the final weekend of the regular season, Binghamton has its most wins in a season since going 29-18 in 1999. The Bearcats have now won 26 of their last 32 games.
Marsteller scattered three hits and struck out 10 batters and did not allow a walk in the nightcap to record her second straight complete-game shutout. Her record improves to 9-4 on the season, which includes a career-high four shutouts.
Laney tossed the first five innings of the opener and improved her record to 14-5. She allowed three hits, issued just one walk and struck out nine batters. Laney now has 150 strikeouts for the season, which breaks the single-season mark set by Michelle Weeks in 2003.
Price, meanwhile, finished the first game with a pair of scoreless innings.
Cornell, which came into the day with a .294 team batting average, was held to a .160 mark by Laney, Price and Marsteller.
“Cornell is a good offensive team,” head coach Michelle Burrell said. “Demi, Rhoda and Kate did a great job with their hitters. We played good defense behind them as well.”
Freshman first baseman Lisa Cadogan finished the day a team-best .571 (4-for-7). Freshman designated hitter Tiffany McIntosh and junior outfielder Colleen Dougherty each hit .500.
Binghamton broke open a scoreless first game with three runs in the top of the second inning. Junior third baseman Mikala King singled home the first run and scored one batter later on a two-run home run by sophomore shortstop Caytlin Friis.
Freshman catcher Taylor Chaffee keyed a four-run third inning with a two-run double. McIntosh and King each added RBI singles.
Freshman outfielder Sydney Harbaugh stole her 24th base of the season during the third inning of the first game. That sets the Binghamton program single-season record. The old mark of 23 stolen bases was set by Michelle Thorton in 1995.
Senior outfielder Jessica Phillips, meanwhile, clubbed her 45th career double in the second inning of the first game. That sets the Binghamton program’s all-time record. The previous mark of 44 doubles was set by Jami Pier (1997-00).
Meg Parker took the loss for Cornell in the first game, dropping her record to 3-7.
The Bearcats could only muster three hits in the second game but McIntosh got the one that mattered in the top of the sixth inning. She singled home Dougherty to break open a scoreless tie.
From there, Marsteller retired the final six batters of the game. Despite not giving up an earned run, Alyson Onyon was tagged with the loss. Her record is now 15-17.
Binghamton now heads into a three-game home series against Albany, which will determine the America East regular-season champion. The Great Danes are currently 13-1 in conference play while the Bearcats are 13-2. Whichever team wins at least two games will host the conference tournament May 9-11.
The Bearcats and Great Danes will play a doubleheader at the Bearcats Sports Complex on Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single game at noon on Sunday.
NOTES: Laney’s 14 wins is the highest total by a Binghamton pitcher since Kristen Emerling finished the 2010 campaign with a 14-5 record … Marsteller’s 10 strikeouts represents her season high.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton men’s tennis (16-9) has drawn third-ranked Georgia (22-4) in the first round of the NCAA tournament. After winning the program’s sixth consecutive America East title, BU’s prize was a first-time trip to Athens to face the reigning SEC champion Bulldogs.
“We knew it would be a tough team whoever we drew ... but we didn’t think it would be the third-ranked team in the country,” said head coach Adam Cohen, whose team watched the NCAA Selection Show in the Events Center TAU Bearcat Room. “It is what it is and we will have to prepare over the next week and a half to be ready for Georgia. We look forward to the challenge and will come out with a lot of energy and give it all we have.”
The Bearcats will be making their ninth trip to the NCAA tournament in the last 11 years. The team, which features two freshmen in the top singles positions and just one senior, earned their bid with a 4-0 victory over UMBC in Sunday’s America East Championship. Binghamton beat the host Retrievers for the fourth straight year in the finals.
“It’s an honor to play such a high seed,” senior Bastian Bornkessel said of the NCAA matchup with Georgia. “You go for a reason ... so we will be ready and will give it our best.”
Georgia has four nationally-ranked singles players in its starting lineup, including the sixth-ranked player in the nation. They are coming off a 4-0 win over seventh-ranked Tennessee in the SEC championship match. It was Georgia’s second straight conference title. The Bulldogs will be making their 35th overall appearance in the tournament and 30th straight. Georgia reached the NCAA quarterfinals in 2012, and has reached the finals in three of the last seven seasons. In all, the Bulldogs own six NCAA championships, most recently winning in back-to-back seasons in 2007-08.

San Antonio, TX—Junior Bryce Edmister fired a second round 71 (-1) to take sole possession of the individual lead at the America Sky Golf Conference championship at The Dominion Country Club in San Antonio. Binghamton dropped a pair of spots on the day with a team score of 303 (+15) and currently hold a seventh place position in the 12-school event. Southern Utah fired a second round 285 (-3) to take the team lead, a slight one-stroke advantage over first round leaders Houston Baptist.
Edmister, who entered Tuesday in third place after an opening round 70, had yet another eventful front nine at the Dominion Country Club. In his first five holes, BU’s top player recorded two birdies and a pair of bogeys to begin the day. Just two holes later, he took advantage of the par 5 seventh with an eagle on the 528 yard hole. Edmister went on to record 10 pars and one bogey the remainder of the round to jump into the first place spot with a 36-hole total of 148 (-3). He holds the one stoke lead over Jordan Herzog of Webster State and Jordan Weir of Sacramento State who both are two under par.
Senior David Cellura continues to play well in San Antonio, recording a 73 (+1) in round two. Cellura had a nice start on Tuesday, making birdies on the pair of par fives that wrap up the 3400 yard front nine (7th and 9th hole). After a birdie on 10 and four straight pars, he gave a few strokes back after three bogeys on the remaining four holes at the Dominion. Cellura firmly sits in 18th place, tied with four others at 148 (+4).
Sophomore Jack Sedgewick followed up an opening round 77 with a 79 on Tuesday. The Ontario native made just one birdie on the afternoon, but it came at the right time as he recorded a 4 on the par 5 18th and final hole of the day. Sedgewick made 11 pars Tuesday, but was hurt by a pair of double bogeys in the second round. Freshman Jesse Perkins rounded out the Binghamton lineup on Tuesday with an 80 (+8).
As a team, the Bearcats have a 36-hole total of 601 (+25) and trail tournament leaders Southern Utah who have a two-day total of 581 (+5). Binghamton is 12 strokes behind fifth place Utah Valley entering Tuesday as they are in search of their seventh top-5 team finish of the season.
The final round will take place tomorrow as BU tees off beginning at 8 am with Perkins. Edmister starts his day at 8:32 and is in search of his first individual tournament championship as a Bearcat. Follow live final round results here

VESTAL, N.Y.—Visiting Marist (22-17-1) snapped a 2-2 tie with three runs in the fourth inning and the Red Foxes tacked on two more in each of the fifth and sixth frames to defeat Binghamton (21-18) 9-2 in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
Marist outhit BU 12-7 and benefited from five extra-base hits, including a two-run inside-the-park home run in the sixth inning. The Bearcats, who have dropped four of their last five, were held to four hits over their final six scoreless innings.
Down 2-0 after the Red Foxes scored a pair on three singles in the first, BU loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame but an attempted bunt single resulted in an inning-ending putout with three stranded. After leaving another runner at second in the second, BU struck for the tying runs in the third.
Junior DH Shaun McGraw ripped a 3-2 fastball into the Bearcats’ bullpen in left field to make it 2-1. After junior first baseman Brian Ruby drove a pitch to the gap in left center for a double, junior shortstop John Howell followed with an RBI single to center, plating Ruby with the tying run.
But Marist opened the fourth inning with a double and RBI triple and before it was over, the visitors had plated three runs on three hits and led 5-2. A walk, hit batter and two hits produced two more runs in the fifth and the Red Foxes finished the scoring with two more runs in the sixth courtesy of the inside-the-park home run, which banged off the wall in left center, eluding two BU outfielders.
Howell went 2-for-4 with an RBI, the lone BU player with more than one hit. McGraw’s home run was his team-high fourth of the season.
Freshman Jake Cryts (3.1 IP) took the loss. Classmate Tsuyoshi Horibata tossed the final four innings and allowed two runs on three hits.

America East Conference Release
Freshman catcher Taylor Chaffee has been named the America East Softball Rookie of the Week. It marks the third time this season that she has earned the conference’s weekly accolade.
Chaffee hit .375 with a team-high two home runs and six RBI in leading Binghamton to a 5-0 week. She belted a three-run home run against Colgate on April 23 and followed up with a 3-for-9 performance (.333) in the series against Stony Brook this past weekend.
Chaffee drove in two of the three runs in the Bearcats’ 3-2, eight-inning win in the opening game of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Seawolves. That includes the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning. For the week, Chaffee recorded an on-base percentage of .444 and a slugging percentage of .750.
Heading into the final week of the regular season, Chaffee ranks ninth in the America East in batting (.319), is tied for second with nine home runs and is sixth with 32 RBI. She also ranks second in slugging percentage (.646).

NOTES: Binghamton has now had six of the 11 America East Rookie of the Week selections during the current softball season. San Antonio, TX—Binghamton shot an opening round 298 (+10) on Monday’s first round of the America Sky Championship. The Bearcats head to tomorrow’s second round in fifth place; 16 strokes behind leaders Houston Baptist who shot a team-low 282 (-6). Junior Bryce Edmister had his best round of the spring, making a team-high six birdies on his way to a 70 at the par 72 Dominion Country Club.
BU came out the gate strong on the front nine, firing a combined score of even par as a team. After bogeying the opening hole, Bryce Edmister tore up the remainder of the front. He recorded birdie on four of his next eight holes, including a four on the short par 5 ninth at the Dominion. Three Binghamton players shot a 37 (+1) and all recorded birdie on the ninth hole.
On the back, the Bearcats had an up-and-down finish. Edmister birdied the 11th hole and sat at four under all the way up until the 15th hole where he had a slight hiccup. The junior lefty double bogeyed 15 and bogeyed the following hole, but regained his balance after a birdie on the long par 5 18th. His two-under performance is the lowest round a BU player has recorded at the America Sky Championship since 2007 (Zach Vinal-70). In a field of 60 players, he is tied for 3rd place and just two shots off Utah Valley’s Brayden Eriksen.
Senior David Cellura was steady on Monday, making a team-best 12 pars in round one. His two birdies came on the 9th and 18th holes (both par 5’s). With a first round of 75, he sits in a tie with one other player in 19th place. Sophomores Josh Holling and Jack Sedgewick shot 76 and 77, respectively. Holling made four birdies in the opening round, three coming on par 4’s. Despite a rocky finish, Sedgewick relied upon three birdies on the front to shoot a 77.
Round two will begin tomorrow morning at the Dominion Country Club as Binghamton looks to climb back into closer contention. They are just five shots off a third place standing and eight off second place as the field looks to chase Houston Baptist on Tuesday.

BALTIMORE, Md.—Binghamton men’s tennis continued its command of America East tennis with a 4-0 win over host and second-seeded UMBC in the championship match Sunday afternoon from the Retrievers Tennis Complex. The conference title was BU’s sixth straight and ninth in the last 11 years and advances the Bearcats to the NCAA tournament. It is one of the longest current title streaks of any team in any sport in the America East.
Head Coach Adam Cohen’s squad, which had two freshmen at the top of the lineup and five underclassmen playing singles, overcame its youth and a home-court Retrievers advantage that threatened to even the playing field. But the Bearcats came out and immediately put the pedal to the metal and grabbed the opening doubles point with two lopsided matches at first and second doubles. It was more of the same in singles as BU finished off UMBC in the first three completed matches.
“We came out with a lot of energy today from the first doubles point on,” Cohen said. “Our doubles play was probably the best its looked all season and from there we really put pressure on them, winning the first set in five of the six matches at singles. Every year is really so special and its just a testament to all the hard work these guys put in. We have a really young squad this season, so for guys like Sid (Hazarika), Alex (Maisin) and Elliot (Hureau) to step up at the top of our lineup has been really huge.”
Senior Bastian Bornkessel, the team’s lone senior who has seen nothing but titles in his four-year collegiate career, paired with freshman phenom Sid Hazarika for an 8-3 win at the top spot. The win was Bornkessel’s 70th career doubles victory, which ranks fourth in program history.
Junior Ruben Haggai and freshman Eliott Hureau combined for an 8-3 win at second doubles, beating their teammates at No. 3 to the wire to clinch the point and end doubles play. The third tandem of sophomores Robin Lesage and Ismael Dinia were up 6-4 when their match was halted.
In singles, Haggai polished off a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 to make it 2-0. Dinia won at No. 4, 6-3, 6-3 and Hazarika finished off the win with a 7-5, 6-0 triumph at first singles. Haggai, who stretched his win streak to 14 matches, was named the Most Outstanding Player. He went 2-0 in singles at the tournament and also posted a doubles win in the final to join his brother Alex Haggai as back-to-back Most Outstanding Players. The elder Haggai, a volunteer assistant this year while working toward his MBA at Binghamton, won the top honor last spring.
“Ruben deserved the award,” Cohen said. “He was our first guy off the court in singles today and before that, had a strong doubles match. He’s had a good run of late (14 straight wins) and was an important part of our championship run this weekend.”

Binghamton will gather Tuesday, April 30 to watch the unveiling of the 64-team NCAA Championship bracket and see where they will be headed. The team will meet the media and fans in the Events Center TAU Bearcat Room at 5 p.m. for the viewing on ncaa.com.
“We’re excited to learn where we will be headed for NCAAs and very happy to keep our season going,” Cohen said.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Visiting Stony Brook (17-28, 9-12 AE) belted a three-run home run, built an 8-0 lead and defeated Binghamton 8-4 in the rubber game of the three-game set Sunday afternoon from the Bearcats Sports Complex. The loss dropped Binghamton (21-17, 10-10 AE) into fourth place in the conference standings, just 1.5 games ahead of the Seawolves for the final playoff spot with nine league games remaining.
Stony Brook took advantage of a rare off-outing from senior right hander Jay Lynch, who surrendered nine hits and four runs in five innings. Lynch (4-4, 2.51 ERA) entered the day having allowed just one earned run in his previous 21 innings but Stony Brook got to him for two runs in the first and two more in the third. The Seawolves broke the game wide open with four runs in the sixth - three courtesy of a three-run home run from first baseman Kevin Courtney, who also hit a grand slam on Saturday.
Down 8-0, BU had a chance to take a chunk out of that deficit in the bottom of the sixth when they strung together three hits and loaded the bases. But after a two-out RBI single by junior shortstop John Howell, the Bearcats left the bases full and still trailed 8-1.
Binghamton was limited to the one run on three hits until putting three on the board in the ninth and forcing the Seawolves to dip into their bullpen twice. A leadoff walk to junior first baseman Brian Ruby and a double by Howell put runners on first and second. After a shallow pop-up ate up the first out, junior center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz walked to load the bases. Sophomore right fielder Zach Blanden then ripped a two-run double to the wall in right center, giving BU life. Down 8-3, freshman third baseman David Schanz brought in the fourth run on a groundout before a comebacker stranded Blanden and ended the game.
Howell went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Blanden moved his RBI count to 20 with the two knocked in.
Stony Brook outhit BU 12-6.

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Visiting Binghamton (26-13, 13-2 AE) scored all of its runs in the top of the fifth inning en route to a 5-2 win over Stony Brook (25-22, 7-8 AE) in an America East softball game on Sunday afternoon at University Field. With the win, the Bearcats sweep the three-game weekend series and set up a first-place showdown with Albany (30-11, 13-1 AE) next weekend at the Bearcats Sports Complex for the America East regular-season title.
The Bearcats have now won six straight games and have recorded their highest win total in America East Conference games in a season. They have swept all five conference series this year and have gone 8-1 on the road during that span.
For the first four innings on Sunday, both teams were unable to capitalize on their scoring chances. The Bearcats left six runners on base during that stretch while the Seawolves left the bases loaded in the bottom of the third inning.
Finally, the floodgates opened in the top of the fifth inning. Junior second baseman Jessica Bump scored the first run on a wild pitch. Two batters later, freshman catcher Taylor Chaffee drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 2-0. Sophomore shortstop Caytlin Friis followed with a RBI single and freshman designated hitter Griffin McIver wrapped up the scoring with a two-run single.
Stony Brook got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning. Shayla Giosa scored on a sacrifice fly and Alexandria Pisciotta singled home the second run.
Junior pitcher Demi Laney tossed four shutout innings to improve to 13-5 on the season. Senior pitcher Kate Price finished off the final three innings to record her third save of the year. Allison Cukrov was tagged with the loss, dropping her record to 9-13.
“I thought we stayed composed and in control even though some things didn’t go our way early in the game,” head coach Michelle Burrell said. “Demi again got us out of some tough spots and pitched very well. Jess (Phillips) also made a great catch in the sixth inning.”
Friis finished the game 2-for-4. For the series, she hit a team-best .444 (4-for-9).
Freshman outfielder Sydney Harbaugh went 4-for-11 (.364) during the weekend while Chaffee was 3-for-9 (.333) and Bump was 3-for-10 (.300). On the mound, Binghamton held Stony Brook to a .241 batting average and recorded an ERA of just 0.64.
Before its series with the Great Danes next weekend, Binghamton heads to Cornell on Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
NOTES: Laney now has 141 strikeouts this season, which is just two behind the program’s single-season record of 143, set by Michelle Weeks in 2003. Cyrilla Suker struck out 142 batters in 2007 … Binghamton won 11 America East games in 2002, back when conference series were four games as opposed to three games.

Baltimore, MD—Freshman Pat Young’s goal with 1:18 left in the game was the difference as UMBC held on for a 10-9 win over Binghamton Saturday afternoon at UMBC Stadium in an America East conference game. Young scored four goals on the game, lifting the Retrievers to a conference tournament berth and eliminating the Bearcats from postseason play. Junior Matt Springer scored four goals in the loss as Binghamton ends their season 5-9 and 1-4 in conference play.
Binghamton went up 8-6 with just 18 seconds left in the third quarter before UMBC started to turn the tide. The Retrievers scored with just one second left on the clock and continued their comeback in the fourth. A goal from Young and later a score from senior Matt Gregoire at the 8:55 mark gave the hosts a one goal lead. In what was a very competitive game defensively, Binghamton bought its time in their attempt to tie the score as sophomore Emmett O’Hara stepped up big late. The second-line midfielder ended the 3-0 drought with a top shelf finish with just under three and a half minutes left. After an empty offensive possession for the Bearcats, UMBC capitalized with Young’s long range heroics. The talented freshman fired from beyond 10 yards out to put UMBC ahead for good as they held on for the win and their 10th consecutive tournament appearance.
“This game was back-and-forth all afternoon,” head coach Scott Nelson said afterwards. “We fought hard and were there down the stretch, but didn’t make the necessary plays. It all comes down to them executing down the stretch and unfortunately we didn’t.”
The two teams had eight ties and lead changes during the 60 minutes of action Saturday. Both junior goalie Max Schefler and UMBC goalie Wes DeRito made 12 saves apiece to headline the defense. On offense, Springer had a team-high four goals and finished up the season with 36, which is now a new program mark. O’Hara had a career-high two goals against the Retrievers as the Bearcats were outshot 34-27 on the afternoon.
In the first half, the bench put the Bearcats on the board first. In Emmett O’Hara’s first shift with the second midfield, he beat a defender off the dodge and lined a shot from the left side about five yards out. After a Retrievers goal, junior Brandon Planck put the visitors up one with his 19th goal of the season. However, UMBC rebounded with a goal of their own to even things up at two after one quarter of play.
After a tripping call, BU moved the ball effortlessly on the man-up early in the second, opening the door for Springer to do damage. The red shirt junior ripped a shoe lace shot that grounded past Wes DiRito for BU’s third goal of the game. With 2:16 remaining in the half, Springer scored again on a similar low skipping shot, this time on the assist from Tucker Nelson. The Bearcats defense in the first half was tremendous, holding the Retrievers to just three goals on 14 shots. As a team, BU won 5-of-9 faceoffs and held a 17-15 groundball advantage heading into intermission. Schefler made five saves in goal to pace BU.
UMBC opened up the scoring in the second half, tying things up at four on the Pat Young score. Almost at the halfway point, Springer deposited a rocket past Dirito for his third goal of the game and a 5-4 lead. After a quick answer from UMBC, Binghamton relied once again on its second midfield unit. Junior Kelly Donigan sprinted left and fired a one hop shot into the back of the cage at the 6:16 mark. Donigan’s goal was his 10th of the season, giving the Bearcats a one goal cushion.
Later in the quarter, the Bearcats used some good fortune to take a 7-6 lead. Sophomore JT Hauck’s shot attempt was deflected off a player and bounced up high in the air, leaving junior Michael Antinozzi just one play on the rebound. The Fallston, Maryland native snatched the ball in mid-air and fired a shot all in one motion for a highlight reel score. The Bearcats upped their lead to 8-6 on a caused turnover from Shane Warner. Defender Shawn Needham hustled for the ground ball and found Springer for his fourth goal of the game and the 8-6 lead.
The Binghamton offense managed just one goal in the fourth quarter as they were unable to secure their first playoff berth since 2011. BU graduates just four players and returns a host of key players for 2014. Antinozzi, Springer and Nelson all return on the offensive side having all scored 25 points or more this season. Both Tucker Nelson and Matt Springer broke single season records this season. Nelson with his 27 assists sits atop the charts for a season and Springer now holds the record for goals in a season (36), career goals (94) and points (111).

Baltimore, MD- Binghamton fell to number one seeded Stony Brook 4-0 on Saturday afternoon in the America East semifinals held at the UMBC Tennis Complex. The Seawolves bested BU on Saturday, winning their 11th dual match of the season and second over the Bearcats in 2013. SBU captured the doubles point and powered their way to their second straight America East finals appearance with wins from first, second and fifth singles.
Despite a huge performance out of Katherine Medianik and Agatha Ambrozy at first singles, SBU took the first two doubles decisions, 8-2 and 8-4, respectively, jumping ahead 1-0. Medianik and Ambrozy held a narrow 8-7 lead over reigning AE Player of the Year Nini Lagvilava and Polina Movchan before the Seawolves ended play with their 8-4 triumph over Alexis Tashiro and Shea Brodsky.
Lagvilava took down Medianik in straight sets and freshmen Alexis Tashiro and Agatha Ambrozy suffered tough two set losses, giving the Seawolves the 4-0 decision. Brodsky won her first set at the fourth spot and Missy Edelblum was ahead in the second set at sixth singles.
The Bearcats wrapped up the season with a 5-17 record in 2013. They will return six players next season, only losing one player to graduation (Jessie Rubin).

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Binghamton women’s lacrosse team fell 17-6 to No. 10 Stony Brook in its season finale, Saturday afternoon from LaValle Stadium. The Bearcats (2-12, 1-5 AE) were outshot 42-19 by the Seawolves (14-2, 6-0 AE), who will host the America East tournament next weekend after an undefeated conference campaign.
Binghamton was led by Katherine Hunsberger’s four points as she netted her 13th career hat trick while handing out her first assist of the season. The senior captain finished the year with a team high 36 points (35g, 1a) after recording her fourth straight hat trick. Hunsberger ended her career on a 17-game goal streak dating back to last April. Junior-transfer Angela Vespa also scored three goals to collect her second hat trick of the year, as the pair accounted for all six Binghamton goals.
Stony Brook, who is amidst its best season in school history, forced 16 Binghamton turnovers controlling the time of possession. The Seawolves fired 42 shots on Bearcat goalies Kara Pafumi and Erin McNulty, who combined for 13 saves. Hunsberger battled all day with the nation’s leading goal scorer Demmianne Cook in the draw circle, but the Seawolves chased down 15 of the 25 draws.
In the first half, the nation’s best offense (15.87 gpg) raced out to a 5-0 lead thanks to four goals from Cook. Binghamton tallied its first goal at the 16:46 mark as Hunsberger netted her first of the day to end the Stony Brook run. However, the Seawolves netted three straight goals before a free position goal by Hunsberger made the score 8-2 with just over seven minutes left in the first half.
Stony Brook continued to apply pressure on Binghamton going on a 4-0 run to take a ten goal lead, 12-2, at the 2:59 mark of the first half. Hunsberger fed Vespa for her first goal of the day halting the third Stony Brook run of the half, but the Seawolves still led 12-3 at the break.
The Seawolves scored the first two goals of the second half to take its largest lead of the game 14-3 at the 24:46 mark. Vespa attempted to cut the Stony Brook lead under 10 midway through the second half scoring a pair of goals, but Cook and company proved too much for the Bearcats. Stony Brook maintained a double-digit advantage throughout the second half, cruising to the 11-goal victory.
Hunsberger ended her historic career at Binghamton as the program’s all-time leader in draw controls with 152. She currently ranks ninth in the nation with 5.58 draw controls per game. Hunsberger also upped her BU single-season record for draw controls to 76 after picking up six against the Seawolves. Her 35 goals is the fifth highest single-season total by a Bearcat and her 83 career goals ranks her fifth all-time in program history.
Classmate Kimberly McGeever also stamped her mark on the Binghamton record book finishing second all-time in program history with 58 assists. McGeever set the single-season school record for assists as a junior with 33. Her 121 career points (63g, 58a) ties her for fourth all-time in program history with Leanne Musso (2005-08).
Binghamton completes the 2013 campaign with a 2-12 record, but picked up its fourth-ever America East victory with a 7-6 win over Vermont earlier in the year.
The America East Championship will be hosted by top-seeded Stony Brook on May 3 and 5. The Seawolves will face No. 4 seed Vermont in the first semifinal, while No. 2 Albany will meet No. 3 New Hampshire in the other semifinal matchup.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Junior Jack Rogalla allowed just four hits in nine strong innings and classmate Shaun McGraw had two hits and two RBI as Binghamton (21-16, 10-9 AE) defeated Stony Brook, 3-1, to gain a split of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon from the Bearcats Sports Complex. The visiting Seawolves (16-28, 8-12 AE) took the opener 5-1.
Rogalla (4-3) was sharp all game long and only a run on a double-play grounder in the eighth prevented his shutout. He struck out two and didn’t walk a batter in lowering his season ERA to a stingy 2.11.
McGraw led the offense with an RBI single in the first - part of a two-run outburst - and a two-out RBI double in the fifth.
Binghamton loaded the bases with no out in the first against Stony Brook starter Brandon McNitt. Sophomore right fielder Zach Blanden opened the frame with a walk and freshman third baseman David Schanz dropped down a perfect bunt single. Sophomore left fielder Jake Thomas hit a comebacker to the mound but McNitt threw high trying to get the lead runner at third and that loaded the bases. After a shallow pop-up, McGraw lashed a single through the right side to score Blanden with the first run. Senior first baseman Jordon Smucker then made it 2-0 with an RBI groundout to second.
In the fifth, junior second baseman Daniel Nevares sent a two-out double into the right field corner and McGraw followed with a deep shot to the base of the wall in right center, giving the Bearcats and Rogalla a 3-0 cushion.
The Seawolves threatened to make it a big inning in the eighth after back-to-back hits put runners on first and third with no outs. But Rogalla induced the 4-6-3 double play and another grounder to limit the damage. Rogalla and Smucker teamed for a nice defensive play to begin the ninth with Smucker stabbing a grounder and tossing to Rogalla, who raced over to cover the bag. Junior center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz made a diving catch on a shallow fly for the second out and a 6-3 groundout finished the game.
McGraw went 2-for-4 with the two RBI and Nevares and Bereszniewicz each went 2-for-4.
In the opener, Stony Brook scored the decisive runs with one swing - a grand slam in the fifth inning off the bat of first baseman Kevin Courtney. Bearcats’ starter Jake Lambert was cruising along in a 1-1 game and struck out the first two hitters in the fifth. But a sharp single under his 6-foot-9 frame and a soft infield single put runners on and the Seawolves loaded the bases with a walk. Courtney then blasted a 1-0 offering over the wall in right center for the damage.
The Bearcats had a few chances early to get to Stony Brook starter Frankie Vanderka, but aside from one run and five hits, Vanderka didn’t bend. Binghamton used a one-out single by Bereszniewicz and a triple to deep right center from Blanden to plate the game’s first run. Blanden, however, was stranded on third. The Seawolves used a single and double to even the score in the fourth but Thomas cut down the go-ahead run at the plate with a strong throw from left field. Binghamton threatened in the fifth with back-to-back two-out walks. Sophomore catcher Nick Pancerella ripped a Vanderka offering on a rope to deep left but the Seawolves outfielder reached to snare it at the warning track, saving two runs.
Binghamton put two runners on base in the sixth but couldn’t deliver and wound up stranding six in the seven-inning game.
Lambert (4-2) went the distance, allowing the five runs on nine hits. He struck out six and walked a pair.
Nevares went 2-for-3 - the only Bearcat with more than one hit.
Binghamton will send out senior Jay Lynch (4-3, 2.06 ERA) for Sunday’s rubber game, which begins at noon.

STONY BROOK, N.Y.—Freshman catcher Taylor Chaffee had two RBI in the opener and freshman designated hitter Tiffany McIntosh drove in all three runs in the nightcap, leading Binghamton (25-13, 12-2 AE) to a sweep of Stony Brook (25-21, 7-7 AE) in an America East softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at University Field. The Bearcats won the first game 3-2 in eight innings before taking the second game 3-0.
With the sweep, Binghamton has now recorded its highest single-season win total during its 12-year NCAA Division I era. The old mark of 24 victories was set during the 2010 campaign. The Bearcats have also now taken all five conference series they have played this year.
Senior outfielder Jessica Phillips broke open a scoreless tie with a solo home run in the fifth inning of the first game. Two innings later, Chaffee made it 2-0 with her ninth home run of the season.
Down to their last out in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Seawolves tied the game on a two-run single by Jessica Combs. Chaffee, however, put the Bearcats up 3-2 with a RBI single in the top of the eighth inning. The Seawolves left the tying run on third base in the bottom of the frame.
Junior pitcher Demi Laney went the distance to improve to 12-5 on the season. She scattered two runs on seven hits and struck out 10 batters. Both of the runs were unearned and she did not issue a walk.
Allison Cukrov nearly matched Laney, scattering three runs on seven hits and striking out eight batters. Her record, however, fell to 9-12.
In the nightcap, McIntosh broke open a scoreless tie with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning. She then gave the Bearcats breathing room with a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning. Stony Brook went down in order in the bottom of the frame.
Senior pitcher Rhoda Marsteller, meanwhile, recorded her third solo shutout of the season in raising her record to 8-4. Jane Sallen took the loss, dropping her record to 6-7.
Junior second baseman Jessica Bump, who scored on McIntosh’s home run, finished the day 3-for-6 (.500) and reached base a team-best five times.
Laney and Marsteller held Stony Brook to a .232 batting average and posted a 0.00 ERA.
Binghamton and Stony Brook conclude their three-game series with a noon game on Sunday.

Baltimore, MD—The Binghamton women’s tennis team advanced to their 12th straight semifinals match at the America East Tournament on Friday with a 4-0 victory over Hartford at the UMBC Tennis Complex. Freshmen Sara Kohtz, Alexis Tashiro and Agatha Ambrozy made quick work of their opponents on the singles court, securing the match for BU with straight set wins.
In doubles play, sophomore Missy Edelblum and Kohtz cruised to an 8-1 victory at third doubles. They improved their record to 5-11 when paired together this spring. At second doubles, freshmen Alexis Tashiro and Shea Brodsky won the first seven points against Hannah Goldman and Jessica Galik and later moved on to win with a score of 8-2. Ambrozy and sophomore Katherine Medianik were ahead in their match 6-4 before the doubles point was decided.
Ambrozy blanked Hannah Greenberg, 6-0,6-0, securing her 6th dual victory of the season. The freshman from St. Petersburg, Florida reeled off multiple service aces on her way to BU’s second team point. Both Kohtz and Tashiro nearly had a similar result, winning in speedy fashion as they allowed just one Hartford point apiece. Kohtz picked up her fourth straight singles win and has won six of her last seven matches at either the second or third spot in the Bearcats lineup. Senior Jessie Rubin played solidly at sixth singles, coming up just a point shy of her second win of the season, leading 6-0, 5-1 before her match was called.
The Bearcats return to action on Saturday morning at the UMBC Tennis Complex when they take on first seed Stony Brook at 10 a.m.. The defending champion Sea Wolves have a record of 10-4 this season and recently beat Binghamton 4-0 in Vestal, NY back on April 6.

BEARCATS ON A ROLL
The Bearcats head into Monday’s first round of the America Sky Championship having won back-to-back tournaments to close out regular season play. Most recently, Binghamton overcame a 14 stroke deficit with a final round 287 (+3) that propelled them to the team title at the Rutherford Intercollegiate on Sunday afternoon. No player shot worse than 74 on Sunday, led by sophomore Josh Holling who fired a 70 (-1) at the Penn State Blue Course. Junior Bryce Edmister tallied Binghamton’s best showing over the weekend, finishing in 10th place with a 54-hole total of 223. Holling (T-15), sophomore Jack Sedgewick (T-17) and freshman Jesse Perkins (T-22) rounded out the BU lineup in what was their third victory of the 2012-13 campaign.
BINGHAMTON BRIEF
The Bearcats have six top-5 finishes this season, headlined by their wins at the Cornell Invite, Mount St. Mary’s Invitational and Rutherford Intercollegiate. Josh Holling won individual medalist honors at the Cornell Invitational this fall with a two-day total of 142 (-2) and junior Bryce Edmister picked up a pair of runner-up finishes this season at the top of BU’s lineup. Edmister and Holling have combined for nine top-10’s and four top-20 finishes as the Bearcats have a scoring average of 299.8 as a team. Underclassmen Jack Sedgewick and Jesse Perkins have solidified themselves as key performers this spring, each picking up a pair of top-20 finishes. Sedgewick guided the Bearcats to a win at last week’s Mount St. Mary’s Invitational with a 54-hole score of 217 (+1). Senior David Cellura also has been consistent this season, finishing second on the team in scoring average (75.8). He recorded his best finish in his standout four-year career here at the Mount St. Mary’s Invite (T-4).

AMERICA SKY HISTORY
Last season, BU had a disappointing finish at the conference tournament by their standards, finishing 9th of 12 teams. A final round 340 put them out of the hunt as they wrapped up the 54-hole event with a final score of 968 (+104). ’12 graduate Mike Surdey was Binghamton’s best finisher, tying for 20th place out of 60 competitors. The Bearcats have yet to claim an America Sky Tournament championship since joining the conference in 2007. Their best finish came in the spring of 2011 when they finished fourth. Individually, the Bearcats recorded back-to-back fifth place finishes with Andrew Marler in 2009 and Jake Katz in 2010.

SETTING THE SCENE
Binghamton heads into the weekend matchup with a record of 1-3 in conference play after suffering a narrow defeat to Vermont, 8-7, this past Saturday. Despite a three-goal effort from junior Brandon Planck, the Bearcats fell behind 4-2 in the first quarter and continually played catch up as they fell short in the end on senior day. Junior Michael Antinozzi scored a pair of goals and added an assist from the midfield and junior goalie Max Schefler made 13 saves in defeat for BU. Seniors Tyler Perrelle, Shane Warner, Kraig Heston and Matt Moynihan were honored before the game as three of the four players saw action in Saturday’s game.
UMBC also fell this past weekend, losing to #10 Albany, 16-10, on the road Friday. Senior attack Matt Gregoire tallied four goals and an assist, but was outdone by the duo of Ty and Lyle Thompson who combined for 12 goals and seven assists for the Great Danes. Trailing just 8-7 at half, the Retrievers had no answer for the nation’s leading offensive team as UAlbany outscored them 8-3 in the final 30 minutes of action. Phil Poe won 15-of-25 faceoffs and tallied a goal in defeat for the Retrievers who average 11.33 goals per game as an offensive unit.
GETTING TO KNOW THE OPPONENT
The Retrievers are in a three-way tie for second place as it stands in the America East conference. With wins over Vermont and Stony Brook, UMBC would advance to their 10th consecutive conference tournament with a win over Binghamton Saturday. The Retrievers are second only to Albany in goals per game in conference play (14.00) and lead the league with a faceoff percentage of .542. Three players have tallied 20 or more goals this season for UMBC, led by senior Scott Jones. Jones has 27 goals this season, starting each and every game on the attack for 20th year head coach Don Zimmerman. Phil Poe will take a majority of the faceoffs on Saturday, heading into Saturday with a .579 success rate out of the “x”.
WHERE THEY STAND
The Bearcats, as mentioned earlier, have a record of 1-3 in conference play. They are currently in the outside looking in when it comes to making the conference tournament. Three teams share a record of 2-2 (Stony Brook, Hartford and UMBC). With a Binghamton win, coupled with both a Vermont and Stony Brook loss, the Bearcats would nab the third seed. Hartford plays Vermont at 1 pm on Saturday and Stony Brook plays league leaders Albany later that night at 7.

SPRINGER TIES GOAL RECORD
The 2013 season has been a historic one for junior attack Matt Springer. Earlier this season against Manhattan, his five goals gave him the program record in goals scored. Later, he reached the 100-point plateau against Hartford, and this past Saturday he tied teammate Michael Antinozzi for the single season goals record with 32. As it stands, Springer is fifth in the conference in goals per game this season (2.46). For his career, he has 90 goals and 107 points in 41 games played.
SCHEFLER STANDS OUT
Junior goalie Max Schefler has started all 13 games this season and has put together one of the better season’s in school history between the pipes. He has compiled 156 saves and carries a 5-8 record in net for the Bearcats. With four saves Saturday, he would pass former All-American standout Kevin McKeown for the single season saves record. Also, if the season ended today, Schefler would have the third highest save percentage mark at .565, only behind McKeown’s mark in 2004 (.589) and 2003 (.607).
CAPITALIZING ON THE MAN UP
The Bearcats are 19-of-46 on the man up this season, scoring over 41 percent of the time on such opportunities. They currently boast the 11th best man-up offense in the entire nation and are the best amongst America East schools- edging out Saturday’s opponent UMBC who sits at 39.5 percent. Springer leads the team with five goals on the man-up and juniors Brandon Planck and Michael Antinozzi both have four scores apiece to pace the Bearcats. Their current mark of .413 would go down as the best percentage in school history, besting the 2011 season when they went 19-of-54 (.352). The record for man-up goals in a season is 22, set back in 2006.

Baltimore, MD—
Event: America East Women’s Tennis Championships
Dates: Friday, April 26-Sunday April 28
Venue: UMBC Retriever Tennis Complex (Baltimore, MD)
Schedule:#4 Binghamton vs. #5 Hartford (Friday- 10 am)
#1 Stony Brook vs. Winner of 4/5 (Saturday- 10 am)
#2 Albany vs. #3 UMBC (Saturday- 2 pm)
Championship Match (Sunday- 2 pm)
SETTING THE SCENE
Binghamton (4-16) enters the America East Tournament as the fourth seed after going 1-3 against conference teams this season. The Bearcats will square off with fifth seed Hartford (0-15) on Friday morning at 10 am at the UMBC Retriever Tennis Complex in Baltimore, Maryland. BU defeated the Hawks back on April 6 at home in a 7-0 sweep. The Bearcats won both doubles matches by a score of 8-2 and nearly blanked Hartford in singles play, winning all five matches in straight sets. BU is a perfect 15-0 all-time versus Hartford and 5-0 in America East Tournament play; including a 4-0 win last season in the Quarterfinals.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS
Hartford has yet to win a dual match this season and have lost 34 straight dating back to September 14, 2011. Junior Katina Zampas leads the team with a 3-11 record at first and second singles. Freshman Colleen Beck is 2-13 in singles and 2-17 overall in doubles competition for second year coach Michael Louis. Hartford is looking for their first America East tournament win since 2001.
BINGHAMTON OUTLOOK
Despite losing 12 of their last 13 matches, the young Binghamton squad heads to Baltimore having shown steady improvement throughout the season. The Bearcats’ roster, which features six underclassmen, including four newcomers, have experienced a difficult non-conference slate and are battle tested moving forward to tournament play. “The schedule I put together for the regular season was extremely challenging,” third-year head coach Libby McGovern explained. “Playing against tough competition from start to finish this year has been extremely helpful for our team. We have improved tremendously this season, and if we put together everything we learned from our regular season, we will be a very dangerous team to play against this weekend.”

During a recent stretch, BU has played Ivy League powers Cornell (14-4), Princeton (12-7) and 72nd ranked Harvard (11-6). The Bearcats have also had a bit of misfortune along the way, losing a pair of 4-3 heart-breakers to both Albany and FDU in recent weeks. “Our success in the tournament comes down to maintaining our focus on big points and having them go our way,” McGovern said. “Also, we have to maintain emotional and mental control throughout the entire match. The girls are prepared for what lies ahead, now it’s just a matter of putting everything together at the right time.”
FRESHMEN CLASS STEPS UP
Binghamton’s freshmen class of four has jumped right into the fold this season. All four have played a valuable role on the squad, combining for 31 singles and 17 doubles wins this season. Newcomer Sara Kohtz has been terrific in the middle of third-year head coach Libby McGovern’s lineup, winning a team-high 13 singles matches this season. She is an impressive 9-4 from the second and third singles spots in dual competition. Alexis Tashiro is 5-13 in dual competition, playing anywhere from 2-4 in the lineup. In addition, Tashiro and fellow freshman Shea Brodsky are 4-10 playing together at second doubles this spring. Agatha Ambrozy in all likelihood will play at fifth singles this weekend, going 5-12 from that spot to this point. Ambrozy has spent time playing with Bearcats’ number one player Katherine Medianik at first doubles this year as well.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton men’s tennis departed for UMBC on Thursday, where the five-time reigning champions will compete at the America East Championship this weekend.
The Bearcats (14-9), the tournament’s top seed, will begin defense of their crown with a semifinal match against fourth-seeded Hartford at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. A win would move BU into Sunday’s 10 a.m. championship match. The America East winner receives the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Championship. Binghamton has won five consecutive conference titles - the third-longest active streak in any sport in the America East. The Bearcats have advanced to the NCAAs eight times in the last 10 years - easily the most successful sports team at the University.
After a challenging early spring that saw BU face five nationally-ranked opponents, the team has performed its trademark late-season surge. Head coach Adam Cohen‘s squad has won six matches in a row and nine of its last 10. Included in its win total are lopsided victories over America East opponents Hartford (7-0) and UMBC (6-1), teams that likely represent BU’s path at the tournament. The host and second-seeded Retrievers will benefit from a home environment - the first time the championship won’t be contested at a neutral location in BU’s 12-year tenure. Last year in Flushing, BU toppled UMBC 4-1 in the finals.
The Bearcats have freshmen playing in the top two singles positions and only one senior on the roster.
Freshman No. 1 Sid Hazarika has been outstanding, posting a 20-3 singles record, including a 9-1 mark at the top spot. Classmate Alexander Maisin has 17 wins at No. 2 in his inaugural collegiate season. Sophomore Robin Lesage (20-11) holds down the No. 3 spot, followed by sophomore Ismael Dinia (15-13), junior Ruben Haggai (20-9) and sophomore Florian van Kann (11-9) in the 4-6 positions. Haggai has won 12 consecutive matches and his championship experience will be pivotal. Senior doubles specialist Bastian Bornkessel (68 career doubles wins) combines with Hazarika to form BU’s top doubles tandem.
“I think our guys are looking forward to the tournament,” Cohen said. “Having played five of our last six matches at home has helped get some of the guys rested. This will be the first time since my arrival that the tournament will not be at a neutral site ... so I think playing so many matches on the road and also playing at UMBC just a few weeks ago will help our guys. Our team is obviously young with two freshmen and three sophomores among our top six. However, we have played a difficult schedule up to this point so I feel our guys have been tested and have gained a good amount of experience and confidence over the spring season.”

VESTAL, N.Y.—Visiting Canisius (29-10) led off the 11th inning with a double and run-scoring triple and the Golden Griffins held off Binghamton (20-15) 7-6 in an extra-inning non-conference game Thursday afternoon from the Bearcats Sports Complex.
Binghamton sent the game to extra innings with three runs in the bottom of the ninth but left the winning run stranded 90 feet away with one out and compiled 11 left on base in the one-run loss.
Trailing 6-3 entering the bottom of the ninth, sophomore left fielder Jake Thomas, the nation’s leader in on-base percentage, delivered a two-run double down the right field line to cut BU’s deficit to 6-5. With runners on second and third and one out, the Canisius closer threw wild as he was tossing the first intentional ball to junior DH Shaun McGraw, who was going to be walked to set up a force. The throw sailed off the catcher’s glove and toward the backstop, bringing in freshman third baseman David Schanz with the tying run. But BU stranded two and then left another runner stuck in both the 10th and 11th frames.
Needing another rally in the 11th, Thomas drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. But a strikeout and line-out to third ended the threat and the game.
Freshman Tsuyoshi Horibata was saddled with the loss, despite going three solid innings as BU’s fourth pitcher of the game. Horibata scattered three hits and one run. After allowing the run on successive first-pitch hits, he made two outstanding fielding plays to hold the score at 7-6. Earlier, classmate Mike Bunal made his collegiate pitching debut, tossing two scoreless innings. Bunal, who began the season as an outfielder, notched his first strikeout, stranding a runner at third to end the seventh inning.
The Golden Griffins, who have won nine straight, snapped a 1-1 tie with five runs on six hits in the fifth inning. The second hit was a hard shot that caromed off BU starter Jed Lemen, forcing his removal from the game. Canisius sent nine men to the plate and a pair of two-run hits extended their cushion.
The Bearcats got single runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings to pull closer, setting the stage for the ninth-inning rally.
McGraw went 2-for-4 and belted his third home run of the season (second in last three games) to lead off the second inning. The blast on a 1-1 offering cleared the wall in left field and gave him a share of the team lead in round-trippers. He came within a few feet of bringing home the tying run in the 11th when his sharp liner was caught by the Canisius third baseman to end the game.
Thomas had two RBI - his team-high 29th and 30th - and reached base in three of six plate appearances, to keep his NCAA-best on-base percentage at .547. He was denied a two-run home run in the third inning when Canisius right fielder Ryan Coppinger leaped at the wall to snare a deep Thomas shot that was headed into the visitor’s bullpen. Thomas also made a diving catch in left field to save a run in the sixth inning.
Schanz went 2-for-5 with an RBI and junior catcher Scott Musin and junior center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz each went 2-for-5.
The Bearcats now focus on a big three-game home weekend series with America East rival Stony Brook. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon (7- then 9-inning games) and finish with a single game Sunday at noon. Binghamton (9-8) currently sits in third place in the conference standings, just a half-game out of second. Stony Brook is in fifth place.

America East Conference Release
NCAA East Regional Top Performance List
PRINCETON, N.J.—Sophomore middle distance runner Jesse Garn has been named the America East Track Athlete of the Week for April 23. It marks the first time in his career that he has earned the conference’s weekly accolade.
Garn clocked a third-place time of 3:45.67 in the 1,500 at the Princeton/Larry Ellis Invitational this past weekend. His time ranks No. 27 on the NCAA East Region Top Performance List.
At the conclusion of the conference meets in May, the top 48 performances in each event advance to the East Regional Meet, which will be hosted by North Carolina A&T May 23-25. From that meet, the top 12 finishers in the finals will advance to the NCAA Championships, which take place June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.
“This was a great stepping stone for Jesse,” assistant track coach Annette Acuff said. “Being the most competitive field he has raced in, I was impressed.”
Last season, Garn advanced to the finals of the 800 at the NCAA East Regional Meet.

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Junior second baseman Jessica Bump, junior third baseman Mikala King and freshman catcher Taylor Chaffee all homered, powering Binghamton (23-13) to a 7-1, 7-3 sweep of Colgate (15-25) in a non-conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Eaton Street Field. The second game was shortened to five innings due to darkness.
Bump hit a team-best .571 (4-for-7) with a double and a home run. She also scored three times and stole three bases. For the season, Bump is now hitting a team-best .372 with nine home runs and 35 RBI.
Freshman Griffin McIver went 3-for-6 (.500) and drove in three runs while freshman outfielder Sydney Harbaugh went 3-for-7 (.429) and extended her hitting streak to a career-high six games. Chaffee, meanwhile, was 2-for-5 (.400). As a team, the Bearcats finished the afternoon with a collective batting average of .367.
In the opener, Bump broke open a scoreless tie when she led off the top of the third inning with a home run. One frame later, Harbaugh made it 2-0 with a RBI single.
King clubbed a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning, increasing the lead to 4-0. McIver, meanwhile, keyed a three-run seventh inning with a two-run single.
Colgate broke the shutout on a RBI single by Eileen Ornousky with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Junior pitcher Demi Laney scattered one run on seven hits and struck out five batters to improve to 11-5 on the season. She did not issue a walk.
The loss was tagged to Megan Carnasi, who is now 2-9.
In the second game, Chaffee put the Bearcats on the board with a three-run home run in the top of the first inning. It was her eighth home run of the season.
The Raiders, however, scored a run in each of the next three frames to tie the game. Colgate had only two hits during that span but one of them was a solo home run by Alex Gadiano in the second inning.
Bump led off the top of the fourth inning with a double. Two batters later, she broke the tie when she scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman first baseman Lisa Cadogan.
In the fifth inning, Binghamton blew the game open with three more runs. McIver made it 5-3 on a RBI double. She later scored on a single by sophomore shortstop Caytlin Friis. Bump completed the scoring when she singled home Friis two batters later.
Senior pitcher Kate Price tossed three scoreless innings to improve to 5-4 on the season. Courtney O’Connell took the loss and is now 8-8.
Binghamton heads to Stony Brook for a weekend series, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. On Sunday, the two teams will conclude with a noon game.

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Binghamton women’s lacrosse team produced 11 goals on just 17 shots, but fell to host Cornell 17-11, Tuesday evening from Schoellkopf Field. The Bearcats (2-11, 1-4 AE) netted seven second-half goals, but the Big Red’s (9-5, 4-3 Ivy) six-goal halftime lead was too much for BU to overcome.
“We didn’t get as many offensive possessions as we wanted in the first half,” interim head coach Stephanie Allen said. “Cornell did a good job of limiting us offensively, but I was happy with our shot selection and we did a better job of executing our game plan tonight. We talked all week about competitiveness and I thought we were much more focused on that tonight.”
Seniors Katherine Hunsberger and Kristen Stone led six different goal scorers for the Bearcats with three goals apiece. Hunsberger netted her 12th career hat trick while picking up three ground balls and draw controls. Stone had a solid game defensively as well causing three turnovers while grabbing three ground balls and draw controls.
“Katherine and Kristen played very strong for us on both ends of the field,” Allen continued. “Those two (Hunsberger and Stone) were out there fighting every second they had on the field. With the season winding down I know they are trying to leave their mark on the program, which they certainly have done.”
Down 10-4 at the break, Binghamton saw Cornell’s lead grow to as many as eight as the Big Red opened the final 30 minutes on a 3-1 run. Undeterred by the large lead, the Bearcats embarked on a run of their own scoring five of the game’s next six goals to pull within four, 14-10, at the 7:16 mark.
Stone ignited the run firing a shot past the Cornell goalie in the upper right-hand corner. Freshman Allie Rodgers continued the spurt with her second goal of the game on a free position attempt. Cornell answered with a goal, but the Bearcats quickly responded as Stone circled the crease and shot a low liner past the Big Red goalie. A Casey Bulman free position goal followed by Hunsberger’s third goal of the game capped the Binghamton run.
Cornell was too powerful defensively however, forcing 14 BU turnovers and ending the game on a 3-1 run to deflate any hopes of a Binghamton comeback.
The Big Red chased down 22 ground balls compared to the Bearcats’ 14 (second highest total of season) while winning 19 of the 30 draw controls. Binghamton did force 12 Cornell turnovers and was 12-for-16 in the clearing game, but did not possess the ball enough to complete the comeback. Cornell outshout Binghamton 34-18.
In the first half, Cornell opened the scoring but Binghamton quickly responded with a goal from Hunsberger to even the game at one at the 23:40 mark. The Big Red almost immediately answered, winning the ensuing draw control and scoring 21 seconds later. Cornell took a 3-1 lead with just over 19 minutes to play in the first half, but a goal from Angela Vespa trimmed the deficit to one at the 16:39 mark.
However, every time Binghamton scored Cornell seemed to have a response as the Big Red again won the ensuing draw control and this time scored 26 seconds later. The Bearcats again trimmed the Big Red lead to one, 4-3, on a Sophie Racciatti goal from Vespa with just over 12 minutes to go. Cornell was unfazed however, going on a 6-1 run to close the half and take a 10-4 lead into the break.
Cornell limited Binghamton to just three draw controls and seven ground balls in the first half, which turned into a 20-6 shot advantage for the Big Red.
Sophomore goalie Kara Pafumi started the second straight game in net for the Bearcats stopping six shots.
Binghamton concludes its season on Long Island against league-leading and 10th ranked Stony Brook Saturday, April 27 at 1 p.m. Binghamton is 1-10 all-time against the Seawolves.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Sophomore outfielder Zach Blanden hit a two-run home run and went 4-for-4 and Binghamton baseball (20-14) rallied from a 4-0 hole to beat visiting Cornell 6-5 Tuesday afternoon from the Bearcats Sports Complex.
Facing the early four-run deficit, Blanden cut it in half with his blast over the left field wall in the third inning. Junior second baseman Daniel Nevares then drove in the tying and winning runs with a two-run double in the fifth inning, giving BU a win over its nearest Division I rival, which had as many errors as hits (4).
Five Bearcats pitchers combined to limit the Big Red (21-15) to four hits and kept Cornell off the board over the final four innings to preserve the one-run margin.
Sophomore Anthony Grillini, BU’s third pitcher of the day, tossed two innings and didn’t allow an earned run. Grillini (3-0) struck out one and only gave up one hit in earning the win. He followed freshman Jake Cryts, who tossed two hitless and scoreless innings. Sophomore Greg Ostner (2Ks) followed with two scoreless innings of his own before classmate Mike Urbanski picked up the save with a clean ninth frame.
Cornell jumped ahead with four runs in the second inning - three unearned. The big blow was a three-run home run on the visitor’s only hit of the inning. Sophomore starter Mike Kaufman recovered to strike out three straight Big Red hitters but departed in a 4-0 hole.
Binghamton hit into double plays in each of the first two innings before clicking in the third. After junior center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz led off with a walk, Blanden sent a 1-0 offering over the left field wall for his second round-tripper of the season.
The Big Red bumped their cushion to 5-2 with an unearned run in the top of the fifth but opened the door with some loose fielding in the bottom of the inning. The Bearcats took advantage of two errors to plate four runs. Bereszniewicz and Blanden hit back-to-back singles with one out and then ground balls by freshman third baseman David Schanz and sophomore left fielder Jake Thomas resulted in Cornell throwing errors that kept BU’s rally alive. Thomas drove in a run with a sharply-hit ball and after junior DH Shaun McGraw reached on a single to deep short, Nevares sent a shot to the right field corner to plate Schanz and Thomas and give Binghamton the 6-5 lead.
Cornell threatened against Urbanski in the ninth, using a single and a hit batter to move the tying run to third and the go-ahead run to second. But Urbanski got a groundout to second and a liner to Thomas in left to end the game.
Blanden went 4-for-4 with two RBI, Bereszniewicz went 2-for-3 and Nevares collected the pair of RBIs. Thomas entered the game leading the entire nation in on-base percentage (.550) and he reached base in two of four appearances (walk, HP) while adding to his team-leading RBI total (28).
Binghamton continues its seven-games-in-nine-days stretch on Thursday when Canisius comes to town for a 4 p.m. start. The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday but was pushed back a day with rain headed to the Southern Tier Wednesday afternoon.

VESTAL, N.Y. – Junior second baseman Jessica Bump has been named the America East Softball Player of the Week for April 22. It marks the first time this season and the second time in her career that she has earned the conference’s weekly accolade.
Bump finished .467 with three home runs and six RBI as the Bearcats went 3-2 last week, taking two out of three conference games at Hartford in the process. She scored nine runs, recorded an on-base percentage of .600 as well as a slugging percentage of 1.113.
In the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader, Bump recorded the second two-home run game of her career. She ended the three-game series at Hartford with a team-high .429 batting average.
For the season, Bump ranks fourth in the America East with a .358 batting average, is tied for second with eight home runs and is also tied for third with 33 RBI. In addition, Bump leads the conference in runs (38), on-base percentage (.500), slugging percentage (.717) and triples (five).
“Jess has been doing a great job all around for us,” head coach Michelle Burrell said. “She is carrying herself very well both at the plate and in the field. She has done a tremendous job in the leadoff spot and in setting the tone for our offense. She is a leader both on and off the field and continues to work hard all of the time.”
The first time Bump was named the America East Player of the Week came on May 7, 2012. In 2011, she was named to the conference’s All-Rookie Team.
Also on Monday, the America East confirmed that Binghamton and Albany have clinched berths in the America East Tournament. The four-team championship event will take place May 9-11 at the site of the America East’s regular season champion. The Bearcats (21-13, 10-2 AE) sit in second place, just one game behind the Great Danes (28-10, 11-1 AE).
Up next for Binghamton is a non-conference doubleheader at Colgate on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
NOTES: Bump is the second Binghamton player this season to earn the conference’s Player of the Week award. Freshman first baseman Lisa Cadogan got the nod on March 18.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton senior right hander Jake Lambert has been selected as the America East Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced Monday morning. Lambert’s honor makes it two weeks in a row for BU pitchers after teammate Jay Lynch won the award last week.
Lambert improved to 4-1 on season with eight shutout innings against UMBC in BU’s 1-0 series-opening win on Saturday. He equaled his career-high with nine strikeouts while allowing only two hits.
Lambert retired the side in order in the second, fifth, sixth and eighth innings. He worked around a leadoff single in the third and then escaped a two-on jam in the fourth. Lambert also stranded a runner at second in the seventh with an inning-ending strikeout.
With the eight shutout innings, Lambert lowered his season ERA to 3.79. He hasn’t allowed an earned run in his last 15 innings. He has 36 strikeouts in 38 inning pitched against America East foes and ranks fourth in the conference in total strikeouts (47).

State College, PA- The Binghamton University golf team staged a terrific final round comeback on Sunday, overcoming a 14-stroke deficit to take the tournament title at the Rutherford Intercollegiate. With a final round score of 287 (+3), the Bearcats picked up their third tournament win of the season and their second in a row (five days removed from Mount St. Mary’s Invite win). Despite having to withdraw one of their players (David Cellura-sickness), BU used a lineup of just four players who all shot 74 or lower at the Penn State Blue Course on Sunday.
“What a terrific comeback from these guys,” head coach Bernie Herceg said afterwards. “Being down a man, I thought they responded about as well as you could ask of them. We put together another three solid and consistent rounds over the weekend and I couldn’t be prouder of how we competed.”
BU came into the day in fifth place, behind leaders Maryland by 14 strokes. Led by sophomore Josh Holling’s one-under 70, the Bearcats shot the tournament’s low round. Holling climbed 24 spots on the leaderboard to finish in a 15th place tie with a 54-hole total of 224. Junior Bryce Edmister had Binghamton’s best showing individually, securing his fifth top-10 finish of the season with a score of 223 (+10). Sophomore Jack Sedgewick continued his stellar play this spring with a 17th place finish and Jesse Perkins shot an even par 71 on Sunday to secure a 22nd place finish out of 71 players competing.
The Bearcats bested runners-up Xavier by five strokes and Big Ten members Minnesota and Penn State by six. Maryland dropped from first to fifth place on Sunday with a final round score of 308 (+24). Tanapol Vattanapisit of Xavier took home medalist honors after winning a playoff against Penn State’s JD Dornes. Vattanapisit finished with a 54-hole score of 216 (+3), including a one-under 70 on Sunday.
With Edmister’s T-10 finish, he now has nine tournaments where he’s landed in the top-10. He leads the team with a scoring average of 74.7 in 24 rounds played. Holling is a close second on the season with a 75.8 scoring average and has four rounds of under par in 10 tournaments. Despite an opening round 81, Holling rallied to shoot 70 on Sunday at the Blue Course—which was tied with two others for low round of the day.
The win, as mentioned earlier, is Binghamton’s third on the season (Cornell Invite, Mount St. Mary’s Invite and Rutherford Intercollegiate). This is the first time a BU team has won back-to-back tournament titles since the Spring of 2010 when they won both the Hal Sutton Invitational and Lafayette Invitational in consecutive tournaments. In Binghamton’s short 13-year Division I history, the Bearcats have now won three or more in-season tournament titles six times and now have 35 team titles as a Division I program.
Binghamton now turns its attention to the America Sky Conference tournament which begins next Monday (April 29) and continues through Wednesday, May 1. The tournament will be held in San Antonio, Texas at The Dominion Club, a course the Bearcats have seen already this season.
“I think as a team we feel really confident heading into the America Sky Championships,” Herceg said. “The teams we have beat these past two weeks are really good programs and I think this is a positive sign moving forward. If we play consistent and the way we are capable of, I think we have as good of a shot as anybody in San Antonio.”

NCAA East Region Top Performances
PRINCETON, N.J.—Sophomore middle distance runner Jesse Garn, who qualified for the NCAA East Regional Outdoor Track Meet last year in the 800, has put himself in excellent shape to return this season in the 1,500. This past weekend, he clocked a third-place time of 3:45.67 at the Princeton/Larry Ellis Invitational, which ranks No. 27 in this season’s East Region Top Performance List.
At the conclusion of the conference meets, the top 48 performances in each event advance to the East Regional Meet, which will hosted by North Carolina A&T May 23-25. From that meet, the top 12 finishers in the finals will advance to the NCAA Championships, which take place June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore. Last year, Garn advanced to the finals in the 800 at the East Regional Meet.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Senior pitcher Jay Lynch capped a masterful weekend by BU pitchers with eight scoreless innings of one-hit ball, leading Binghamton (19-14, 9-8 AE) to a doubleheader split with UMBC (10-20, 5-13 AE) Sunday afternoon from the Bearcats Sports Complex. Binghamton won the nightcap 9-0 after losing the opener 1-0. Bearcats pitchers allowed one run in 25 innings of work as BU took two of three in the series.
Lynch (4-3) only allowed a single in the third inning and Binghamton stretched a 3-0 lead with six runs in the eighth. He struck out six and worked around four walks to lower his season ERA to 2.06. Lynch has allowed just one earned run in his last 21 innings. With the sizable cushion and more than 100 pitches in the books, Lynch gave way to sophomore Mike Urbanksi, who pitched a scoreless ninth to seal the shutout.
After managing just one run in the previous 17 innings against UMBC, BU’s offense got untracked quickly in Game 2. Junior designated hitter Shaun McGraw belted a leadoff home run over the left field wall in the second inning to stake the Bearcats to an early 1-0 lead. Lynch worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the third and in the bottom of the frame, BU made it 3-0 with a pair of runs. Sophomore right fielder Zach Blanden was hit by pitch with one out and freshman third baseman David Schanz reached when his sacrifice bunt was thrown away by the UMBC pitcher. With runners on first and second, sophomore left fielder Jake Thomas ripped a 2-2 pitch down the right field line for an RBI double. Junior second baseman Daniel Nevares followed with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Blanden from third and making it 3-0.
With Lynch cruising, the Bearcats batted around and put the game away with a six-spot in the eighth. After Thomas was intentionally walked to load the bases, Nevares made the Retrievers pay for the decision with a two-run single up the middle. With one out, junior shortstop John Howell worked a bases-loaded walk to bring in another run and push the lead to 6-0. Sophomore catcher Nick Pancerella then delivered a two-run single to center and junior center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz followed with an RBI groundout to plate the ninth run.
Nevares had three RBI, Pancerella drove in a pair and Thomas reached base in three of four plate appearances, lifting his NCAA-leading on-base percentage to .550. Aside from his RBI double, Thomas drew two walks and now has an America East-high 32 bases on balls, which ties the school record set by Brendon Hitchcock in 2007.
UMBC took the opener 1-0 as they scratched out the game’s lone run in the second inning to make a hard-luck loser out of junior starter Jack Rogalla, who pitched a strong 7.0 innings. Rogalla allowed just three hits and struck out seven but the offense was shut down on four hits. In the second frame, Rogalla walked the leadoff hitter and UMBC’s Tom Gilchrist sent a ball to center that deflected off the glove of a backtracking Bereszniewicz for a double. With runners on second and third, the Retrievers scored the decisive run on a groundout to second.
Binghamton squandered a leadoff single in the second, hit into a double play in the fourth, left a runner stranded in scoring position in the fifth and left the tying run at second in the seventh and final frame. In that last at-bat, BU put two runners on after a hit batter and infield single but Gilchrist grabbed a foul fly off the bat of Howell in the right field corner and barely kept it in his glove as he brushed the fence for the final out.
McGraw went 2-for-3 and Thomas had two walks in three plate appearances.
The Bearcats continue a busy stretch at home with a non-conference game against Cornell on Tuesday. That game begins a seven-games-in-nine-days stretch, which culminates in a key three-game set against Stony Brook.
NOTES
Maine leads the conference standings (13-4), followed by Albany (10-8), Binghamton (9-8), Hartford (9-9), Stony Brook (7-11) and UMBC (5-13).

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Sophomore second baseman Jessica Bump went 3-for-5 with two home runs, three RBI and scored five times as Binghamton (21-13, 10-2 AE) split an America East softball doubleheader against Hartford (16-26, 5-7 AE) on Sunday afternoon at the UH Softball Stadium. The Bearcats dropped the opener 5-3 before taking the nightcap 6-1. For the weekend, Binghamton took two out of three games from the Hawks.
Freshman first baseman Lisa Cadogan finished the afternoon 4-for-7 (.571) with a pair of RBI while freshman outfielder Sydney Harbaugh was 3-for-7 (.429). As a team, the Bearcats hit .300 during the doubleheader while holding Hartford to a .149 batting average.
“I thought we played well today,” head coach Michelle Burrell said. “We lost composure in the field a little bit and just couldn’t come up with a timely hit to bounce back from it. I thought Jessica Bump got our offense going and did a great job at the plate and in the field.”
Bump scored all three Bearcat runs in the first game. She led off the afternoon with her seventh home run of the season and made it 2-0 in the third inning when she scored on a single by Cadogan.
Held hitless through three innings, the Hawks plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and two more in the fifth inning. Jenice Aloyo scored Hartford’s first run in the fourth inning and smacked a two-run, inside-the-park home run in the fifth inning.
After leaving the bases loaded in the top of the sixth inning, the Bearcats got a run back when Bump homered again with one out in the top of the seventh inning. She would be the final Binghamton runner, however, to reach base.
Zuzana Kudernatschova raised her record to 10-11 with the complete-game victory while senior pitcher Rhoda Marsteller fell to 7-4 with the loss.
Cadogan finished a perfect 3-for-3 in the opener, marking the fourth time this season she has recorded a three-hit game. Bump, meanwhile, homered twice in a game for the second time in her career. She first accomplished the feat against Cornell on May 2, 2011.
Once again, Bump got things started in the second game. She led off the first inning with a walk, stole second base and scored on a double by Cadogan. Two innings later, Bump made it 2-0 on a RBI single by freshman designated hitter Tiffany McIntosh. With the bases loaded in the top of the fourth inning, Bump was hit by a pitch, forcing in the Bearcats’ third run of the game.
Binghamton picked up three insurance runs in the top of the fifth inning. Senior outfielder Jessica Phillips made it 4-0 with a RBI double. In the process, she broke the program record with her 171st career hit. She had been tied with Mollie Lehman (1997-00), who set the old record with 170 hits.
With Phillips still on second base, freshman catcher Taylor Chaffee made it 6-0 with her seventh home run of the season.
Junior pitcher Demi Laney departed the game after five scoreless innings. She would go on to earn the win and finished the weekend with a perfect 0.00 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 12 innings of work.
“I thought Demi and Taylor worked really well in game two to shut down their hitters,” Burrell said.
Hartford finally broke the shutout in the bottom of the sixth inning when Katie Wacyk scored on a ground out. Senior pitcher Kate Price, however, retired the final five batters of the game.
Laney is now 10-5 while Kaitlyn Meade dropped to 4-10 with the loss.
Harbaugh led the Bearcats with two hits in the second game.
Up next for Binghamton is a non-conference doubleheader at Colgate (15-23, 9-7 Patriot League) on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
NOTES: Bump finished the weekend with a team-best .429 batting average while Harbaugh and Cadogan each batted .400.

Vestal, NY—Binghamton (5-8, 1-3 AE) came up just short Saturday afternoon, dropping an 8-7 America East conference game to visiting Vermont (4-9, 1-3 AE) at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Catamounts used a 4-2 first quarter and never trailed as they secured their first conference win of the season. Junior Brandon Planck netted three goals for the Bearcats who fell to 1-3 in conference play.
In the first half, the visitors jumped out to a sparkling start on the offensive side of the ball. After both teams traded goals to begin the game, Vermont reeled off three unanswered. Senior Drew Philie buried his 29th goal of the season at the 9:02 mark and Tim Yager made it 4-1 with one of his two goals on the afternoon.
Still in the first quarter, and down 4-1, junior goalie Max Schefler made a excellent stop for Binghamton and heaved an outlet to senior midfielder Shane Warner who raced up the field on the counter attack. Warner split two defenders with a great feed to a wide open Tucker Nelson who calmly found the back of the net for his ninth goal of the year.
The Bearcats started to get things rolling in the second as they climbed out of a two-goal hole. After a UVM turnover, the aforementioned Planck scooped up the ground ball and headed towards the goal mouth where he dove and lined a low lefty shot into the cage for the score. Just over a minute later, fellow junior Michael Antinozzi evened the score at four with his goal at the 9:43 mark in the second. Antinozzi weaved between two defenders and spun to his left where he fired a shot that snuck past Vermont goalie Justin Rosenberg . However, Vermont entered the half with a narrow 5-4 lead after Patrick Clark’s goal with two minutes remaining.
The Catamounts raced out to a 7-4 lead in the third after back-to-back goals from leading goal scorers Drew Philie and Graham Horvath. Much like in the first half, BU was able to respond closing out the quarter on a 2-0 run. Planck maneuvered his way in front of the cage and laced a side arm shot that was shoveled past Rosenberg, bringing the Bearcats to within two. Fast forward to 51 seconds left in the quarter, it was Antinozzi who found the back of the net as Binghamton charged to the fourth quarter down just one, 7-6.
Now in the fourth, Vermont’s Tim Yager put the visitors up 8-6 with his 12th goal of the season at the 12:58 mark. Both teams went back-and-forth in the highly contested quarter until BU finally got an open look for their leading goal scorer Matt Springer. Antinozzi found a cutting Springer who rifled a shot from his shoe laces that bounced past Rosenberg, putting BU down just one with a little over three minutes remaining.
After a lengthy Vermont possession and the subsequent pulling of Schefler out of goal to force a double team, Graham Horvath tried to score the open net goal but was denied by the standout BU goalie who quickly spun the ball out on the attack. After a missed shot attempt from Binghamton, the Bearcats turned the ball over on a controversial no-call as the visitors ran out the clock for their first conference win of the season.
Three players recorded a pair of goals for the Catamounts, including Philie who now has 30 goals on the season. Rosenberg was phenomenal in goal for the visitors, making 15 stops on the afternoon as they held BU to just 2-of-6 on the man-up.
Planck netted the hat trick Saturday, his fifth of his career in the loss. Antinozzi scored two goals and added an assist, increasing his career point tally to 89. Both Nelson and Springer scored on attack for the Bearcats as they again won the shot battle 38-32 on the afternoon. With Springer’s goal, he ties the single season goals record of 32 set just last season by teammate Michael Antinozzi.
Both teams split faceoff wins Saturday (9-of-18), headlined by a career-best 7-of-14 from freshman Joey Dalfo. Freshman Chris Bechle had his best game in a BU uniform, causing three turnovers and scooping up three ground balls on the back line. Schefler made 13 saves on the afternoon as the Bearcats fell to 3-4 playing at the Bearcats Sports Complex this season.
The game was a home sendoff for four BU players as the Binghamton faithful said goodbye to seniors Matt Moynihan, Tyler Perrelle, Shane Warner and Kraig Heston. Three of the four players played in Saturday’s game, with goalie Heston sitting out with an injury. Warner tallied an assist in his final home game and Perrelle earned his final start at home in a prolific career that has seen him sit atop nearly every offensive category in the BU record books.
The Bearcats return to action next Saturday in Baltimore as they travel to play the UMBC Retrievers in their regular season finale. UMBC recently fell on the road to Albany on Friday, 16-10, as they sit with a 2-2 conference standing and 5-7 record overall. BU defeated the Retrievers last season in their regular season finale by the score of 15-8.

VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton women’s lacrosse team fell to visiting Albany 22-16, Saturday afternoon in America East action from the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Great Danes (10-4, 4-1 AE) utilized a commanding 37-12 shot advantage to limit the Bearcats (2-10, 1-4 AE) to their second lowest scoring output of the season.
Prior to the game, the Binghamton women’s lacrosse program honored its eight graduating seniors. It marked the largest class in program history and as a group they combined to play in over 400 collegiate games. Lena Amalfitano, Casey Bulman, Katherine Hunsberger, Isabelle Mahoney, Kimberly McGeever, Kristen Stone, Kristin Pennino and Lindsay Vona all suited up in their home whites for the last time on Saturday.
Seniors accounted for all six of the Binghamton goals, as Hunsberger recorded her 11th career hat trick to lead the way for the Bearcats. McGeever found the back of the net twice, while Bulman netted her sixth goal of the season.
Binghamton raced out of the gates taking a 3-0 lead just 1:38 into the contest. Bulman scored her lone goal 50 seconds into the game on a free position attempt to get things started for the Bearcats. BU then scored back-to-back goals just 13 seconds apart. Stone found McGeever before Hunsberger won the ensuing draw control and raced past the Albany defense for her first goal of the game.
From there it was all Albany however, as the Great Danes closed the half on a 13-1 run. A pair of goals by Jess Antelmi, sister of BU player Rachel Antelmi, pulled Albany within one with just over 25 minutes left in the half. McGeever pushed the lead back to two a few minutes later with her second goal. That would be the last goal of the half for the Bearcats as the Great Danes scored 11 unanswered goals to take a 13-4 lead into the break.
Albany extended its lead to 11 early in the second half before a pair of Hunsberger goals brought the Bearcats within 10. The Great Danes ended the game on a 6-0 run, scoring 20 or more goals for the fifth time in the series’ history. Albany was able to control possession in the second half by committing just two turnovers and not allowing Binghamton to grab a single ground ball.
Sophomore Kara Pafumi got the start in net for the Bearcats, just her second of the year, making nine saves.
Binghamton played Albany fairly even statistically, going 4-for-5 in the clearing game and picking up 13 of the 30 draw controls. Hunsberger had eight of those draw controls to break the school record of 135 held by Lauren Wetherell. Hunsberger entered the game tied with Wetherell and now holds sole possession of first place with 143.
All eight seniors started for interim head coach Stephanie Allen, who was able to gain clearance for Vona after missing the entire year with a preseason knee injury.
Binghamton will face a pair of ranked teams to wrap up its schedule next week, making the quick trek to nearby Ithaca to take on No. 20 Cornell on Tuesday, April 23 at 7 p.m. before heading to Long Island to play first-place and 10th ranked Stony Brook on Saturday, April 27 at 1 p.m.

Binghamton (5-7, 1-2 AE) returns home after falling 12-11 on the road this Monday at Canisius. Down 12-6 heading into the fourth quarter, BU mounted a comeback that included three goals in a row from junior Matt Springer. With the score 12-10, Brandon Planck brought the deficit to one with his score at the 1:32 mark. On the ensuing faceoff, Canisius was able to recover the ground ball and hang on as the clock hit zero for the escape and the victory. BU outshot the Golden Griffins 15-1 in the final 15 minutes of play, but lost 22-of-27 faceoffs to drop to 2-4 away from home this season. Springer scored a career-high six goals for the third time in his career on Monday, breaking his previous high in goals scored in a season (now sits at 31). Sophomore Tucker Nelson dished out five assists on the evening, increasing his assist total to 26 (new single season program record). Planck added three goals and junior goalie Max Schefler made 11 saves in defeat. The Bearcats are currently in a tie for fourth place in the conference standings and hold the tiebreaker over Stony Brook as it stands because of their victory in a head-to-head matchup two weekends ago.
Vermont (3-9, 0-3 AE) has lost four straight and are winless in conference play heading into Saturday. The Catamounts recently fell to #12 Albany last Saturday in a high scoring affair 21-11 in Burlington, VT. Drew Philie and Graham Horvath each scored four goals apiece in the loss as Albany took advantage of the man-up, scoring on 4-of-5 opportunities. Vermont avearges just over eight goals a game on the season, just below Binghamton’s 8.39 per game. Philie leads the Catamounts with 28 goals and 34 points on the season. He’s had a terrific four-year career for UVM, recording 119 goals and 49 assists in 57 games played. Horvath is second on the team with 27 goals this year, he has scored a goal in each and every game this season and collected four hat tricks. Freshman goalie Justin Rosenberg has started in goal the last 10 games for the Catamounts. He is 3-7 this season with a team-high 98 saves. SUPERB SENIORS
On Saturday, the Binghamton lacrosse program will honor its four seniors (Tyler Perrelle, Shane Warner, Kraig Heston and Matt Moynihan). Together, they have competed in a total of 146 games and carried a record of 20-34 (.370) in three-plus seasons, highlighted by their trip to the America East tournament in 2011. Perrelle holds the program record in points (109), assists (54) and is third in shots (282). On Saturday, he will have played in each and every game since he arrived in 2010 (55 straight). Warner is a four-year performer who has accumulated five goals and three assists over a span of 47 games playing out of the midfield. A two-way player, Warner is one of the four captains this season. Heston has played in 20 games and started in 10 of them in net for BU. He holds a 9.00 GAA and is fifth all-time in program history in saves with 119. In 2011, Heston finished ninth in the country in GAA and won five games in goal for Binghamton. Moynihan has played in 25 games at Binghamton as a midfielder. The Cold Spring Harbor, NY native has accumulated two goals and two assists over a four-year career. He has been named to the America East Honor Roll all three seasons at BU.
LENDING A HELPING HAND
Sophomore attack Tucker Nelson continued steallar sophomore season, distributing five assists against Canisius on Monday, bringing his total to 26 on the season. This mark gives him the single season record, eclipsing the record of 23 set by Matt McNamara in 2004. Nelson also dished out five helpers earlier this season in a 13-6 win over Manhattan back on March 16. Nelson is now ranked sixth all-time in program history with his 26 assists as he chases fellow teammate Tyler Perrelle who dished out two assists on Tuesday, extending the record to 54 for his career.
CONSISTENT BACK LINE
The starting defense of juniors Shawn Needham, Greg Cove and freshman Chris Bechle have started all 12 games for second year head coach Scott Nelson. Combined these three have logged 40 ground balls, 29 caused turnovers and have been largely responsible for the best statistical defense in the entire America East (allowing just 10.38 goals per game). Long stick midfielder Garrett Augustyn has also played a large role on the defensive side of the ball, causing a team-high 15 turnovers in 11 starts this season.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Senior right-hander Jake Lambert allowed just two hits over eight shutout innings and Binghamton baseball (18-13, 8-7 AE) broke a scoreless tie with a run in the eighth inning to beat visiting UMBC (9-19, 4-12 AE) 1-0 in an America East game Saturday afternoon from the Bearcats Sports Complex.
Lambert (4-1, 3.79 ERA) tied his career high with nine strikeouts and sophomore reliever Anthony Grillini got the final three outs to nail down the win. It was Grillini’s third save of the season.
UMBC starter Mac Gill retired 21 of 23 BU hitters through seven innings with only sophomore left fielder Jake Thomas reaching base. Thomas, who leads the nation in on-base percentage, had a single in the fourth and a double off the wall in the seventh but Gill retired everyone else before the Bearcats finally did their damage in the eighth. After a groundout to open the frame, senior first baseman Jordon Smucker laced a sinking shot to right field that slipped under the glove of the Retrievers’ fielder and rolled to the wall. Smucker, who had entered the game in the fifth inning, scampered around to third. A groundout on the next play, however, kept Smucker at third. Junior center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz hit a soft grounder between the pitcher’s mound and first and beat the throw to the bag, diving in head-first in a tight play. Smucker scored on the RBI single for the game’s lone run. The Bearcats added a single and collected three hits in the inning after managing just two hits over the first seven innings.
Grillini entered in the ninth and struck out first two batters before Thomas ended the game with a diving catch in left field.
Thomas went 2-for-3, raising his league-leading average to .389 and his on-base mark to .541.
Lambert put down the side in order in the second, fifth, sixth and eighth innings. He worked around a leadoff single in the third and then escaped a two-on jam in the fourth when junior second baseman Daniel Nevares dove to field a hard grounder and threw out the hitter on a great play to end the threat. Lambert also stranded a runner at second in the seventh with an inning-ending strikeout.
The teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at noon.

The Binghamton University golf team tees it up at the Rutherford Intercollegiate beginning on Saturday, April 20. BU is fresh off their second win of the season at the Mount St. Mary’s Invite on Tuesday. The Bearcats will play 36 holes Saturday and wrap up play on Sunday at the Penn State Blue Course on the campus of Penn State University. The Nittany Lions are hosting the 14-team event, which includes 2012 champion Bowling Green—who Binghamton bested on Tuesday by three strokes to take the team crown.
“We are really looking forward to competing well against some good quality teams this weekend,” head coach Bernie Herceg said. “I’m confident we can carry over some of the momentum from our last event and have solid consistent rounds. This is our final event before conferences, so this should be a good barometer of what we need to work on to prepare us for the best finish possible.”
Binghamton shot a season-low 54 hole total of 877 (+13) at the Mount St. Mary’s Invite earlier this week. All five BU competitors placed in the top-20 individually, led by sophomore Jack Sedgewick. Sedgewick shot a 217 (+1) on his way to a third place finish. In his opening round, he fired a career-best 69 (-3) birdying four of his last eight holes. Senior David Cellura also had a steady three rounds, finishing in fourth place out of 63 individuals. With a 54-hole total of 218 (+2), Cellura buried a team-high 40 pars over a two-day stretch.
In nine tournaments this season, BU carries a team average of 300.1. If the season ended today, they would have the fourth lowest team average in school history. Junior Bryce Edmister continues to lead the team in scoring average at 74.8 and has placed in the top-20 in six events this season (four top-10 finishes). Freshman Jesse Perkins has been Binghamton’s top performer this spring with a pair of top-20 finishes, including a career-best sixth place finish on Tuesday. Perkins fired a second round 69 (-3) at Quail Valley and in three events has a team-low 75.3 scoring average.
This marks the third time Binghamton has competed in the Rurtherford Intercollegiate and the first time since 2011 when they finished sixth out of 16 teams. ’11 graduate Jake Katz finished runner-up in the tournament, recording one of his 11 2nd place finishes on his historic career. Cellura finished T-33 in 2011 with a score of 230 (+17).

WEST HARTFORD, Conn.—Junior pitcher Demi Laney fired a four-hit shutout and freshman designated hitter Tiffany McIntosh hit a two-run home run, leading Binghamton (20-11, 9-1 AE) to a 3-0 win over Hartford (15-25, 4-6 AE) in the opening game of an America East weekend series between the two teams. The win is the Bearcats’ ninth straight against conference competition and clinches their fourth straight 20-win season.
Laney, who has now won her past five starts, struck out a season-high 10 batters in improving her record to 9-5 for the season. She now has five solo shutouts this season and seven for her career.
McIntosh, meanwhile, hit her fourth home run of the season with the Bearcats up 1-0 in the top of the sixth inning. Junior second baseman Jessica Bump started off the inning with a walk but was caught stealing one batter later. Freshman outfielder Sydney Harbaugh followed with a single, setting the stage for McIntosh’s decisive blast.
Junior third baseman Mikala King put the Bearcats on the board when she scored on a fielding error in the top of the third inning. She also started a key double play in the bottom of the sixth inning to get the Bearcats out of a bases-loaded jam.
Zuzana Kudernatschova took the loss for Hartford despite holding the Bearcats to just four hits. Her record falls to 8-11.
“I thought the team did a good job of staying composed and made some adjustments later on in the game,” head coach Michelle Burrell said. “Demi did a great job on the mound and Tiffany came up with a clutch hit.
Binghamton and Hartford will conclude their series with an 11 a.m. doubleheader on Sunday.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton men’s tennis captured its sixth straight match with a 6-1 win over visiting Niagara Wednesday afternoon from the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Bearcats (14-9) have won nine of their last 10 matches.
Niagara seized the doubles point as BU started a bit sluggishly with losses at the top two positions. But the Bearcats returned to form in singles, winning the first three completed matches in straight sets and clinching the win with a three-set victory at No. 3.
Freshman No. 1 Sid Hazarika posted a 6-3, 6-3 win - his team-high 20th dual win of the spring (20-3). Hazarika is 9-1 since moving into the top singles position.
Junior No. 5 Ruben Haggai ran his win streak to 12 with a three-set win. Haggai (20-9 overall, 15-6 duals) dropped his opening set before roaring back for a 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 win.
“Give credit to Niagara ... they played better than us in doubles,” head coach Adam Cohen said. “It was good to see us come back and win five first sets in singles after giving up that doubles point. That gave us the momentum. We dropped a few second sets in the middle when we were in position to close out some matches so that’s something we will have to continue to work on. Robin (Lesage) and Ismael (Dinia) finished on better terms though, which was good to see. We now look forward to one more home match before the conference tournament next weekend,”
Binghamton will conclude its regular season with a home match against America East foe Boston University at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The team will then prepare for the upcoming America East Championship, April 27-28 at UMBC, where BU will be aiming for its sixth consecutive conference title and accompanying NCAA berth.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Visiting St. Bonaventure (11-17) snapped a 2-2 tie with the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and then added an insurance run in the ninth for a 4-2 win over Binghamton in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday afternoon from the Bearcats Sports Complex. Binghamton (17-13) left 13 runners stranded, including the bases loaded in each of the last two innings.
The Bearcats never led but twice rallied to tie the game. St. Bonaventure scored single runs in the third, fifth, eighth and ninth innings and BU countered with one run in each of the fourth and fifth frames. Three of the game’s six runs were scored on either a passed ball or wild pitch as both catchers were kept busy with six balls that got to the backstop and 13 combined walks.
St. Bonaventure put its lead-off hitter on in the eighth (walk) and he came around to score on a sacrifice bunt, groundout and wild pitch.
Binghamton had a great chance to even the score in the bottom of the inning when junior second baseman Daniel Nevares led off with a double off the wall in left center. Junior first baseman Brian Ruby hit a sharp single off the third baseman’s glove to put two runners on and they were moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by freshman third baseman Reed Gamache. A one-out intentional walk loaded the bases but a shallow pop-up to left field and an infield pop-up dissolved the opportunity and left three more stranded.
The Bonnies added a fourth run in the ninth on two singles and a walk.
The Bearcats had another golden opportunity to tie the score or win it in their final at-bat as they sent six men to the plate and had the tying run on second. Sophomore outfielder Zach Blanden led off and reached on a fielding error by the Bonnies’ third baseman. After a sharp lineout to right, sophomore outfielder Jake Thomas muscled a single to shallow right field, putting runners on first and second with one out. But a pop-up to center allowed for no advancement and after Ruby coaxed a walk to load the bases with two out, Gamache hit a comebacker to the pitcher to end the game.
Thomas provided an historical note in the fourth inning when he led off with a solo home run - the first round-tripper hit at the new complex. Thomas belted a 2-2 pitch over the wall in right field to tie the score at 1-1. It was his third homer of the season and team-high 26th RBI. Nevares followed with a hard single to left and he moved to second on a passed ball before getting stranded.
Down 2-1, BU tied it in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out wild pitch. Junior catcher Scott Musin was hit by a pitch to open the inning. After two walks, an infield pop-up and a bases loaded strikeout, Musin raced home from third on a pitch that eluded the Bonnies catcher and just slid under the tag at the plate.
Thomas, who leads the entire nation in on-base percentage, went 2-for-5 and his on-base percentage now rests at .538. Nevares went 2-for-4.
Sophomore starter Jed Lemen allowed just two hits and no earned runs in 3.0 innings, before giving way to freshman Tsuyoshi Horibata, who went 3.1 innings in his official collegiate debut. Horibata scattered three hits and a run in his outing. Senior Joe Swindells (2.2 IP) absorbed the loss.
Binghamton now braces for a three-game conference series against UMBC this weekend. The teams will play a twinbill Saturday beginning at noon.

Littlestown, PA—Binghamton shot a final round 302 (+14) on their way to a victory at the Mount St. Mary’s Invitational at the Quail Valley Golf Course on Tuesday. The Bearcats shot a 54-hole total of 877 (+13) over the two-day event, headlined by their second round 284 (-4) which set a tournament record for the lowest round in the event’s seven year history. All five BU competitors earned a spot in the tournament’s top-20, led by sophomore Jack Sedgewick’s third place finish. Sedgewick shot a 75 on Tuesday on his way to a 54-hole total of 217 (+1).
“After performing so well on Monday, I think it was an even better sign we were able to fight through the tough windy conditions today and pull out the win,” head coach Bernie Herceg said. “It’s not easy facing 20-25 mph winds blowing into the players faces, especially through the tough final stretch of holes here. The guys kept their focus and really pulled out a good team win.”
The Bearcats entered Tuesday with a six stroke lead over Bowling Green and held on for their second win of the season after the Falcons failed to make up the difference, shooting a team score of 299 (+11) at Quail Valley. Senior David Cellura tallied a 72 in the final round to pace Binghamton, he made a team-high 40 pars over 54 holes of play.
Sedgewick went 69, 73 and 75 to claim his best finish as a collegiate player. After a 37 on the front, he had an eventful back nine that included five pars, two birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey on the par 4 12th hole. He played the par fives at three under and racked up 11 birdies total, beating out his previous best finish which was an 18th place finish at the Cornell Invitational earlier this season.
“Jack (Sedgewick) played with a lot of confidence over these two days,” Herceg explained. “I thought he played strongly in our last tournament and just built upon that. His ball striking was solid and he got it going with the putter, especially in the opening round when he shot a 69.”

Cellura climbed his way to a career-best finish as well with his 72 on Sunday. The senior played both the front and back nine at even par and recorded a 54-hole total of 219 (+2). This marks the fourth time in his four-year career that he has cracked the top-10 of the leaderboard. Freshman Jesse Perkins made his first top-10 finish with a sixth place standing at day’s end. Perkins came into Tuesday in a tie for third place with Sedgewick, but fell a few spots after a 77 in the final round of play.
Rounding out Binghamton’s lineup on Tuesday was junior Bryce Edmister who carded a 78 on Tuesday. Both Edmister and sophomore Josh Holling finished with a 228 and came in 18th place out of 63 competitors.
Binghamton’s team title is their second of the season, the other being the Cornell Invitational in the fall. This marks the first time since the 2010-11 season that the Bearcats have won multiple tournaments in a season. Overall, Binghamton has won 34 tournaments as a Division I program.

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—Binghamton baseball (17-12) scored seven runs in the third inning and built a 10-2 lead before hanging on for an 11-9 non-conference win over Marist (18-13-1) Tuesday afternoon at McCann Field.
Starting a stretch of seven games in nine days, BU rested three starters and rolled through five pitchers in a wild game that produced as many combined walks as hits (19).
The host Red Foxes were on the giving end initially, walking eight in the first four frames. Binghamton took full advantage with three runs in the first inning without generating a base hit. Three straight bases on balls to open the game put Marist in a jam and BU plated runs on a groundout by junior first baseman Brian Ruby, a wild pitch and a two-out bases-loaded walk by sophomore catcher Nick Pancerella.
After Marist got two runs back in the bottom of the second, BU sent 12 men to the plate in the decisive third inning, tallying seven runs on three hits, three walks, two errors, a hit batter and wild pitch. Sophomore outfielder Zach Blanden had a two-run double, Pancerella added an RBI single and freshmen infielders David Schanz and Reed Gamache recorded RBIs as the Bearcats saw three Red Foxes pitchers in the frame.
But with a 10-2 lead, BU began to give back as a bases-loaded walk and hit batter keyed a four-run Marist uprising that brought the hosts to within four, 10-6. The Bearcats put their final run on the board in the fifth, courtesy of a two-out RBI single from junior outfielder Shaun McGraw.
The Red Foxes used two walks and another hit batter to push a run across in their half of the fifth and then Marist made it interesting by bringing the tying run to the plate after loading the bases with no out in its final at-bat. They used three hits and a walk to score twice and had the tying run at first when sophomore Anthony Grillini nailed down his second save of the season with a groundout to short to end the game.
Ostner (W, 1-1), BU’s third pitcher of the game, went 3.1 innings and was credited with the win as the most effective of BU’s five hurlers. He struck out seven and allowed just one hit and one run.
Pancerella went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Blanden went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs driven in. Sophomore left fielder Jake Thomas, who entered the game ranked No. 1 in the nation in on-base percentage (.542), reached base in 3-of-5 appearances, raising his season mark to .544. Thomas recorded a double, walk and was hit by pitch.
Binghamton will return home to host St. Bonaventure at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
NOTE
Junior center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz returned to the lineup after missing 16 games with an injury and had a bunt single in the third inning. Bereszniewicz has been out since getting hit with a pitch on March 10 at NC A&T.
