VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton University women’s lacrosse coach Tony Zostant has stepped down after five seasons to pursue other professional opportunities, the school announced Tuesday. Lead assistant Stephanie Allen, who has been with the program since 2008, has been named interim head coach for the upcoming 2013 season.
Zostant came to Binghamton in 2008 after a successful six-year stint at St. Bonaventure. The former Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year led the Bearcats for five seasons, compiling a record of 17-63 and producing 10 America East all-conference players. During his tenure two Binghamton squads earned Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-Academic Team honors and eight players were named to the IWLCA Academic honor roll.
Zostant produced the only three players (Ali Castiglie, Beth Moore, Lis Zuern) in Binghamton’s 11-year history to score 100 career goals.
Allen, a Columbus, Ohio native, has been the top assistant at Binghamton since joining Zostant in 2008. Her primary responsibilities have included serving as defensive and midfield coordinator, recruiting coordinator and scheduling and travel coordinator.
Most recently, Allen helped secure the No. 4 goalie (No. 37 overall) in the nation according to ESPN.com, freshman Erin McNulty, Binghamton’s first-ever top-50 recruit. Allen assisted in the development of Binghamton’s first two-time America East all-conference selection, defender Siobhan Menz in 2009 and 2010. As the academic liaison, Allen helped steer the 2011 Binghamton squad to the top GPA in the America East for women’s lacrosse.
Allen arrived at Binghamton from Presbyterian College located in Clinton, S.C., where she was the program’s inaugural coach for its first three seasons from 2005-07 and groomed it from club status to
the Division I level. A 2003 graduate of Limestone College, Allen was a four-year starting midfielder on the lacrosse team and a team captain her senior year.
Allen served as the Director of the Broome County Girls Lacrosse Club and Youth League from 2007-2012 and currently sits on the Section IV Board of Women’s Lacrosse Officials helping grow the game of lacrosse throughout the Binghamton area. Allen is a member of US Lacrosse and the Women In Sports and Events (WISE) organization and was featured on their website this past September in the ‘Member Spotlight’ segment.
The Bearcats open their 14-game season on February 23 at St. Francis (Pa.).
