Swinson, Swain and Murphy honored by America East

ALBANY, N.Y.—Sophomore forward Sherae Swinson, junior guard Jasbriell Swain and freshman forward Morgan Murphy have each earned all-conference honors from the America East for the 2012-13 season. Swinson was named third-team all-conference, Swain was chosen to the all-defensive team and Murphy was selected to the all-rookie squad.

“We are happy for our three award winners,” head coach Nicole Scholl said. “We have been playing well going into the (America East) Tournament, with two wins in our last three games so this tops off the end of the regular season for us.”

Swinson stepped into a starting role this season and led the squad with 10.2 points per game. She was also third in the conference with 1.1 blocks per contest. During the season, Swinson reached double figures in scoring 15 times and scored at least 20 points twice. Her career high of 25 points came against Vermont on Jan. 16.

This marks the first time in her career that Swinson has earned an all-conference honor.

Swain, who was named the America East Rookie of the Year two seasons ago, ranked second in the conference with 8.4 rebounds per game and was third with 2.6 steals per contest. In addition, Swain finished second on the Bearcats with 8.3 points per contest. Swain grabbed a rebounds three times during the season and poured in a career-best 26 points against Niagara back on Dec. 10.

Swain is the second Binghamton player to be named to the All-Defensive Team since it was established in 2006. Jen Haubrich was selected that year.

Despite missing nine games with an injury, Murphy finished the regular season with 7.1 points per game. She was named the America East Rookie of the Week back on Nov. 12 and reached double figures in scoring six times. Her career high of 16 points came against UNLV on Dec. 12. Murphy also grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds against Arizona State on Dec. 1.

Murphy is the third Binghamton player in the past five years to earn All-Rookie honors. She joins Swain and Andrea Holmes (2009).

Binghamton (6-23) is the No. 7 seed heading into the 2013 America East Tournament. The Bearcats square off against second-seeded Hartford on Friday at noon in the quarterfinal round at Albany’s SEFCU Arena.

Jensen nets team-best 11 points, Elofson adds 10 points

ALBANY, N.Y. – Katie Roth netted a game-high 15 points, leading Hartford (20-10) to a 68-53 win over Binghamton (6-24) in an America East Women’s Basketball quarterfinal game on Friday afternoon at SEFCU Arena. With the win, the Hawks avenged their loss to the Bearcats in last year’s conference quarterfinals.

Roth was one of three Hartford players to reach double figures in scoring. She was joined by Daphne Elliott with 11 points and Nikkia Smith with 10 points.

For the Bearcats, junior guard Stephanie Jensen netted a team-best 11 points while senior forward Kara Elofson concluded her career with 10 points and nine rebounds. Junior guard Jasbriell Swain, meanwhile, finished with seven points, 10 rebounds and three assists.

Hartford made its separation in the opening 20 minutes, shooting 50 percent (12-of-24) en route to taking a 32-22 lead. Elliott led the way with seven points and the Hawks drained three three-point field goals.

“Give Hartford credit,” head coach Nicole Scholl said. “They played very well in the first half and every time we made a run in the second half, they answered.”

A three pointer by senior guard Mallory Lawes pulled the Bearcats to within 34-29 with 16:24 left in regulation. The Hawks, however, responded with an 11-2 run over the next 3:03 to go up 45-31 with 13:00 left to play. Roth had one of Hartford’s three three-point field goals during that stretch.

Jensen pulled the Bearcats to within 60-52 when she nailed a three-point field goal with 1:55 left in regulation. Elliott and Smith then iced the game by going a combined 8-for-8 from the free throw line the rest of the way.

Swain now has 686 career rebounds, which is the seventh-best total in program history. Against the Hawks, she moved past Karen McClelland (1996-00), who had 679 career rebounds. In sixth place is Sonny Mehring (1978-82), who grabbed 681 career rebounds.

Binghamton will now carry the No. 7 seed into the America East Tournament, where they will face No. 2 Hartford on Friday at noon in the quarterfinal round. The game will mark a rematch of last year’s quarterfinal game, which the Bearcats won 48-45.

Again UMBC on Saturday, Murphy was joined in double figures by senior guard Mallory Lawes, who finished with 13 points.
Swain, meanwhile, finished one rebound shy of her career-best 17 rebounds, which she also recorded against UMBC on Jan. 2, 2011. She now has 676 career rebounds and is in eighth place all time in program history. Karen McClelland (1996-00) ranks seventh with 679 career rebounds.

Ashley Lambert added 12 points for UMBC.

NOTES: Coles and Lawes were named the America East Players of the Game ... this year’s America East Tournament is being hosted by Albany ... prior to the game, the Bearcats honored graduating seniors Lawes, Kara Elofson and Simone Thomas during an on-court ceremony.

The game marked the final regular-season road contest for the Bearcats.

With the loss, Binghamton will be seeded anywhere from No. 6 to No. 8 in the upcoming America East Tournament. According to the conference office, with a win over UMBC on Saturday, the Bearcats will be assured of at least a No. 7 seed. Buschmann then netted 12 of her points during a 15-0 run in a span of 7:43, giving Vermont a 36-13 advantage with 36 seconds left in the first half.

Binghamton shot just 19 percent from the floor during the opening 20 minutes, misfiring on 17 of its 21 field goal attempts.

DURHAM, N.H. – Senior guard Mallory Lawes and junior guard Jasbriell Swain each scored 11 points, leading Binghamton (5-22, 4-10) to a 55-42 win over New Hampshire (10-16, 5-9 AE) in an America East Conference women’s basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Lundholm Gym. The win snaps the Bearcats’ five-game losing streak and marks the sixth straight time they have won on the Wildcats’ home floor.

Lawes drained two of her three three-point field goals during the opening 20 minutes of play as the Bearcats went up 20-17 at the break. The Wildcats, meanwhile, misfired on their first 16 field goal attempts and shot just 20 percent during the first 20 minutes (6-of-30).

Senior forward Kara Elofson, who was held scoreless in the first half, netted six points in the first 4:26 of the second half, staking Binghamton to a 28-24 lead. She would finish with 10 points.

Binghamton then blew the game open with a 10-0 run in a span of 4:54 to take a 42-31 lead with 5:44 left in regulation. Lawes drained her final three pointer of the game during that stretch and the Bearcats sank all four of their free throw attempts.

In the final two minutes, however, it was Swain who was the difference. She scored six of her points in the final 1:59 of the game. Swain made a layup and went 4-for-4 from the free throw line during that span.

Cari Reed drained a three pointer with 2:44 left in regulation, pulling New Hampshire to within 44-39 with 2:24 left to go. On the ensuing possession, however, Swain responded with a layup at the 1:57 mark.

Kelsey Hogan made it 47-42 when she converted a three-point play with 1:16 remaining. From there, the Bearcats made all eight of their free throws to ice the game. Swain made the final four attempts.

“Our upperclassmen really came through for us today,” head coach Nicole Scholl said. “The first half was tough for both teams offensively, but we made the scores and the stops we needed to in the second half.”

Swain also finished with a game-high 12 rebounds to record the 12th double-double of her career. She only had one assist, but that helper was the 204th of her career. Swain is now tied with Karen McClelland (1996-00) for 10th place in program history in that category.

Reed finished with a game-high 13 points while Hogan added 12 points.

Binghamton travels to Vermont on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game.

In the second half, Binghamton held the Black Bears to 32 percent from the floor. At the other end of the floor, however, the Bearcats misfired on nine of their 11 second-half free throw attempts.

“I though this game came down to their offense in the first half and our free throw shooting in the second half,” head coach Nicole Scholl said. “It’s frustrating because defensively, we played a lot better in the second half.”

After halftime, Binghamton trimmed the deficit to 41-39 on a layup by junior guard Vanesshia Paulk. Junior guard Jasbriell Swain, who finished with 15 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, kept the Bearcats within 45-43 when she converted a layup with 14:18 left.

Up 61-57 with 4:49 left in regulation, Maine sank four consecutive free throws in a span of 43 seconds to take a 65-57 lead. The Black Bears then sealed the win by going 9-for-12 from the free throw line in the final 90 seconds with Wood making the final two attempts.

Sophomore forward Sherae Swinson added 11 points and seven rebounds while senior forward Kara Elofson chipped in 10 points and six rebounds.

Mikaela Gustafsson finished with 12 points in the winning effort while Lauren Bodine and Sophie Weckstrom each added 11 points.

Binghamton heads to New Hampshire next Saturday for a 1 p.m. game.

NOTES: Wood and Swain were the America East Players of the Game … Swain moves into eighth place all time in program history with 639 career rebounds. Against Maine, she passed Jen Gaeta (630 from 1992-94) and Reagan Stevens (632 from 1993-97). In addition, she now has 11 career double-doubles.

VESTAL, N.Y. – Teasha Harris scored a game-high 14 points, leading Stony Brook (13-12, 5-7 AE) to a 60-57 win over Binghamton (4-21, 3-9 AE) in an America East women’s basketball game on Wednesday evening at the Events Center. The game, which was televised regionally by Time Warner Cable Sports, marked the fourth straight setback for the Bearcats.

Down by as many as 13 points late in the first half, Binghamton came storming back and pulled to within two points at the final media timeout of the game. From there, however, the Bearcats were unable to draw even down the stretch.

“It was disappointing,” head coach Nicole Scholl said. “We played a lot better in the second half but didn’t show the defensive intensity in the first half.”

Stony Brook took a 36-25 into the half. Chikilra Goodman led all scorers with 10 points at the break and the Seawolves scored 17 of their points off of Bearcat turnovers.

Sophomore forward Sherae Swinson scored eight points in the first 4:13 of the second half, pulling the Bearcats to within 44-36. Later in the half, she sank a pair of free throws, trimming the deficit to 55-50 with 4:51 remaining.

It was junior guard Vaneeshia Paulk, however, who nearly completed the Binghamton comeback. She finished off a three-point play with 3:49 remaining, pulling the Bearcats to within 55-53.

Harris responded by making a layup with 3:20 remaining, putting Stony Brook ahead 57-53. Paulk, who finished with a team-high 11 points, made a pair of free throws on the next possession, making the score 57-55 with 3:03 left to go.

From that point, neither team scored for nearly three minutes. Binghamton turned the ball over on two consecutive possessions during that stretch.

Stony Brook fared no better in terms of shooting but Goodman grabbed a pair of key rebounds in the closing minutes, one of which came off a missed Seawolf free throw.

Harris then sealed the game by making two free throws with 18 seconds left, putting the Seawolves up 59-55.

Swinson and senior forward Kara Elofson each finished with 10 points. Junior guard Jasbriell Swain grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds.

Jessica Previlon finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds in the winning effort. Goodman added 11 points as did Brittany Snow.

Binghamton shot 52 percent in the second half (10-of-19) but were undone by 26 turnovers for the game.

Stony Brook held a commanding 27-15 lead in bench scoring.

The Bearcats close out their three-game home stand against Maine on Saturday at 4 p.m.

NOTES: Harris and Paulk were the America East Players of the Game.

When the Binghamton women’s basketball team hosts New Hampshire on Jan. 26 at 4 p.m., it will also be joining in the fight against pediatric center. Teaming up with Go4thegoal, the Bearcats will take part in its “Lacing Up 4 Pediatric Cancer” campaign.

Binghamton assistant women’s basketball coach Sarah Cartmill has been the Bearcats’ liaison with Go4theGoal and has been instrumental in setting up the campaign at the Events Center.

“Whenever our program has the opportunity to help out and bring attention to a great cause, we love to jump at it,” Cartmill said. “Our players and coaches are looking forward to the chance to bring awareness to the Go4theGoal foundation as well as the opportunity to lend a hand in the fight against Cancer.”

Both Binghamton and New Hampshire (including the coaching staffs) will be wearing gold shoelaces during Saturday’s game. The proceeds from that purchase is going to the foundation. We are trying to raise awareness to the foundation.

“Having the support of Binghamton Women’s Basketball is a great way for the school and players to help change the lives of children battling cancer in their community,” Go4thegoal Director of School Initiatives Erica Bickhart said. “We are thrilled to add them to our growing list of participating teams and excited for them to be the first team to Go Gold in 2013.”

Go4theGoal Foundation is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit charitable organization founded in 2006 by Dr. Richard and Beth Stefanacci, soon after their oldest child was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. Together with funds raised privately and it’s many unique awareness and fundraising campaigns, including National Dress 4 Pediatric Cancer Day®, Lace-Up 4 Pediatric Cancer® and Richard’s Run® 5K runs, Go4theGoal provides children undergoing cancer treatment and their families with financial assistance, runs fun hospital-based programs, grants special wishes and supplies state-of-the-art electronic products to children and pediatric oncology units in over 40 hospitals across the country.

“Our Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer campaign has helped to increase visibility for children who are bravely battling cancer,” said Beth Stefanacci, Go4theGoal’s Executive Director. “What started as a simple idea by a member of our family, Lace Up quickly became a staple of Go4theGoal’s fundraising efforts, helping us continue our mission of providing support and resources to children affected by cancer, their families, hospitals and researchers so they can grow up to lead healthy, happy lives.”

Bearcats overcome nine-point halftime deficit, led by Jensen's 15 points

Orono, Maine—Junior guard Stephanie Jensen netted 12 of her career-high 15 points in the second half, including a three-pointer with 1:16 remaining that proved to be the difference in a 67-65 road victory over Maine Sunday afternoon from Alfond Arena. Binghamton overcame a nine-point halftime deficit to pick up their second conference win of the season.

“I’m proud of the way we fought back in the second half,” head coach Nicole Scholl said afterwards. “After struggling in the first half, I think we started to settle down and figure out how to attack on the offensive end. Steph (Jensen) hit some huge shots for us down the stretch and Kara (Elofson) played about as good as I’ve seen her play for us in the second half.”

In total, four Binghamton players hit double figures including Jensen (15), Kara Elofson (13), Sherae Swinson (13) and Kim Albrecht (12). The Bearcats played about as well of an offensive half as they played all season, connecting on 16-of-31 from the field, including an impressive 6-of-9 (.667) from beyond the arc.

To begin the game, junior guard Jasbriell Swain got things rolling for the visiting Bearcats with a pair of buckets that gave Binghamton the early 6-4 advantage. However, the Black Bears rallied in a big way, reeling off 16 unanswered points to jump ahead 20-6 with eight and a half minutes left in the first half. Freshman Liz Wood registered six of Maine’s points during that stretch. Swinson’s 15-foot elbow jumper ended the scoreless drought which eclipsed eight minutes.

Later, a 9-2 BU run, which was capped off by a Swinson layup following a great no-look feed from Swain; put BU within reach at 26-17 with 4:49 remaining. Both teams traded buckets down the stretch of the first half as the Bearcats trailed 33-24 at intermission. Maine shot an even 50 percent from the field, including 4-of-7 from deep. Albrecht tallied seven points off the bench for BU and Swinson chipped in with six to pace the visitors.

Binghamton started to figure out the Maine 2-3 zone at the beginning of the second half as they connected on a pair of three-pointers that cut Maine’s lead to just five at 39-34. Swinson hit a long ball from the top of the arc and Jensen followed suit when she nailed a transition three from the right wing a few possessions later. Junior guard Vaneeshia Paulk continued the run hitting on a driving layup that sliced the Black Bear’s lead to just three.

After trailing by as many as 16, a pair of free throws from Swain knotted the score at 41 with a little over 14 minutes left on the clock. Just moments later, the Black Bears broke out of their offensive lull when Lauren Bodine drilled a corner three to give the hosts a 46-41 advantage. Before that shot, Binghamton was on a 13-4 run.

Maine continued their hot shooting as they went on an 8-3 run, capped off by another long ball from Bodine, putting the Black Bears up 56-48 with eight minutes remaining. With things starting to get away, senior forward and captain Kara Elofson led the Bearcats on a 9-0 run. Elofson’s six paint points in that stretch gave the visitors a 57-56 lead with 5:44 left.

Minutes later and after a pair of threes exchanged by both squads, Albrecht came up big once again. The freshman guard hit a corner jumper to even the score at 62. Possessions later, Elofson muscled her way on the block for another score, giving her a season-high 13 points and her team the two-point lead.

Now, with just over a minute left and the shot clock winding down, Jensen fired a shot well beyond NBA three point range that rattled in giving BU the 67-62 lead. But true to the game’s pace and style, Maine responded on the next possession with a three of their own. After a missed shot, BU corralled the offensive rebound and were able to wind down the clock. After a long range attempt from Jensen went awry, Albrecht grabbed yet another offensive board. Maine was forced to foul with 1.7 ticks left and after BU missed the front end of a 1-and-1 Maine called a timeout. With 1.1 seconds remaining, Maine’s halfcout heave didn’t go, securing BU their third victory of the season.

The win snaps a four-game losing skid for Binghamton and marks the eighth win in 10 most recent games versus Maine. The Bearcats outscored Maine’s bench 25-3 and committed a season-low 10 turnovers (including one in the second half).

Liz Wood led the Black Bears with a game-high 20 points, along with nine rebounds and six assists. Bodine chipped in with 15 points as well for Maine who drops to 0-5 in conference play.

Binghamton gets six days off before hosting UNH on Saturday at 4 p.m.. The game will be the first of a double header, finishing with the men’s game at 7 p.m..

NOTES
The America East Players of the Game were Jensen and Wood. For Jensen, her five three pointers singles the most a BU player has made since Andrea Holmes made five back on Jan. 19 of last year.

VESTAL, N.Y. – Niki Taylor and Annie Wheeler each finished with 14 points and seven rebounds as Vermont (6-11, 3-1 AE) held off Binghamton (2-16, 1-4 AE) 61-56 in an America East women’s basketball game on Wednesday night at the Events Center. The loss was the fourth straight setback for the Bearcats.

The defeat overshadowed a game-high and career-high 25-point performance by sophomore forward Sherae Swinson. In the process, she reached the 20-point mark in scoring for the second time this season.

The difference in the game, however, was rebounding. Vermont held a 52-31 advantage for the game and grabbed 16 offensive rebounds. In addition, with Binghamton continuing to nurse injuries, its bench was outscored 36-3.

“We obviously needed to do a better job with our defensive pressure tonight,” head coach Nicole Scholl said. “We were shorthanded and the players out there for us did what we asked but we didn’t do a good job rebounding.”

Taylor netted 10 of her points in the opening 20 minutes as the Catamounts took a 30-19 lead at the half. The Bearcats, meanwhile, shot just 29 percent before the break (7-of-24).

The second half, however, was a different story, as the Bearcats scored 37 points and shot 42 percent (13-of-31). Swinson led the surge with 16 of her points over the final 20 minutes.

Down 46-33 with 10:13 left in regulation, the Bearcats went on a 12-3 run to pull to within 49-45 with 7:35 left to go. Swinson had five of her points during that stretch.

Junior guard Stephanie Jensen drained a three pointer, pulling Binghamton to within 59-56 at the 48-second mark.

On the ensuing possession, however, Taylor and Tonya Conley each had a clutch offensive rebound off a missed field goal. Conley was fouled after her rebound and made one of two free throws with 16 seconds left to go.

Tierra Shumpert iced the game by hitting a final free throw with 12 seconds remaining. She finished the game with seven points, six rebounds and a game-high 10 assists.

Junior guard Jasbriell Swain added 12 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Binghamton travels to Maine on Sunday for a 2 p.m. game.

NOTES: Swinson and Taylor were the America East Players of the Game … Swinson’s previous career high of 23 points came against Austin Peay back on Nov. 18 … in the past two games, Swinson has averaged 21.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game ... for the season, Swinson is averaging 10.6 points per contest.

The Bearcats shot 40.7 percent for the game (22-of-54) and were 4-for-9 from beyond the three-point arc.
