Libby McGovern wrapped up her fourth season at the helm of the Binghamton women’s tennis program in 2013-14. This past year, McGovern guided the Bearcats to an 8-11 dual record and the two seed in the 2014 America East tournament. Under her guidance, the Bearcats have continued their strong performance on the conference and regional levels.
In her first season at the helm, McGovern was voted the America East Coach of the Year. She coached the Bearcats to their first-ever win over Boston University and to their fourth consecutive runner-up finish at the America East Tournament. In 2012, the Bearcats finished 10-13 and earned their 11th straight trip to the AE semis and their second consecutive trip with McGovern at the helm. She directed the Bearcats to an impressive 5-2 record vs. America East opponents in the spring.
On the individual level, McGovern coached Anna Edelman to a runner-up finish at the prestigious ITA Northeast Regional Championship in October 2010. Edelman went on to be named the America East Player of the Year in 2011 and cracked the ITA National Rankings during the season. Binghamton had a conference-best five players earn America East all-conference honors in singles play and also led the America East with two of the three first-team all-conference doubles tandems. Since taking over, Mcgovern has coached 18 all-conference selections, including five this past season.
In the classroom, the Bearcats have excelled under McGovern too. In both 2012 and 2013, BU has achieved the highest team GPA (among all other women’s tennis programs) in the America East. In 2012-13, they were awarded with the team Academic Cup in both the fall and spring semesters by the Binghamton athletic department. There have been 19 players named to the America East Honor Roll over the past three years, including nine student-athletes earning Commissioner’s Honor Roll status (3.5 GPA and above)
Before coming to Binghamton, McGovern worked at the Binghamton Tennis Center for eight years, teaching both private and group lessons. In addition, McGovern has acted as the junior tournament director as well the director of the junior competitive tennis program and junior summer camps.
On the college level, McGovern was the assistant coach for the Binghamton men’s tennis team from 2003-06. During that time, the Bearcats won back-to-back America East Conference titles in 2004 and 2005.
A 2001 graduate of Ball State University, McGovern was a second-team All-MAC conference selection on three occasions and was named to the conference’s all-academic team her final three years with the program.
McGovern’s husband Bryan has been the head strength and conditioning coach at Binghamton University since 2001. The couple has two children.
