honors student-athletes at 64th annual awards ceremony
van Ingen, Phillips, Edelman "Athletes of the Year;"
Seniors recognized
VESTAL,
N.Y. Binghamton University honored its student-athletes
at the 64th Annual Varsity Awards Program Thursday night at the
Events Center. Nearly 500 students, staff, families and supporters
were on hand as the department unveiled its 2010-11 award winners.
The event was video streamed live on BU's website for the fifth
straight year. Together with a Senior Recognition Ceremony held
prior, the evening featured four student speakers and the annual
highlight video as well as a special 10-year Division I anniversary
film.
"Even
though the sun didn't shine much in Binghamton this year ...
our department certainly did," interim director of athletics
Jim Norris said in his opening remarks.
The
major winners included Athletes of the Year Erik
van Ingen (cross country/track) and Jessica
Phillips (softball) and Anna
Edelman (tennis) on the women's side. Other seniors earning
recognition for their career achievements were men's tennis player
Sven
Vloedgraven, golfer Jake
Katz, baseball player Corey
Taylor, cross country/track runner Chris
Gaube, softball player Deannie
Plemon, swimmer Amanda
Ciccone and volleyball player Michelle
McDonough.

2010-11
Athletes of the Year
MALE
- Erik
van Ingen (Jr., Cross country/Track)
Cross country and track runner who has made his mark in both
sports. During the fall, van Ingen qualified for the NCAA Cross
Country Championshps for the second year in a row and placed
a career-best 43rd at the national meet. During the indoor season,
he ran a lifetime-best 3:57 mile to win the Boston Valentines
Meet. That time remains the fifth-fastest run in the nation this
year. The following week, he won both the 5,000 and 1,000 at
the America East Indoor Championships and was named the Mens
Most Outstanding Track Performer. He went on to be named the
Northeast Regions Most Outstanding Mens Runner and
on March 12, finished fifth overall in the mile at the NCAA Indoor
Track & Field Championships. In the process, he became just
the eighth Binghamton Division I student-athlete to earn All-America
honors.
FEMALE
- Jessica
Phillips (So., Softball)
Sophomore outfielder who has been near the top of every statistical
category during the current softball season. She heads into the
final week of the regular season ranked eighth in the nation
in batting, fourth in on-base percentage and eighth in slugging
percentage. Phillips also leads the America East in home runs
and is second in runs batted in. She has been named the America
East Player of the Week twice this season and is the first player
in school history to hit two grand slams in the same season.
In just her sophomore season, she already ranks second all time
in program history with 28 home runs and fourth with 79 runs
batted in.
FEMALE
- Anna
Edelman (Sr., Tennis)
Senior tennis player who led the Bearcats to their seventh America
East runner-up finish in a record-breaking senior season that
culminated with conference Player of the Year honors. Edelman
set the programs single-season wins record with 34 victories
this year, shattering the old mark of 30 set by Zeynep Altinay
in 2004-05. Ranked No. 2 in the ITA Northeast Region, she recorded
a 16-5 record in dual matches. She swept both of her matches
in the America East Tournament, including a triumph over Boston
Universitys two-time America East Player of the Year. In
the fall portion of the season, she notched 18 wins in tournament
play, highlight by the A Singles crown in the USTA National Tennis
Center Invitational and a runner-up finish at the ITA East Regional
Championships. She finished her stellar four-year career with
a 77-19 career singles record and a 67-19 all-time doubles mark.
2011 Jake
Pitler Award

Corey
Taylor (Sr., Baseball)
Four-year starter and standout on the baseball diamond. During
Taylor's tenure, the Bearcats have won three straight America
East regular season titles, one tournament championship and an
NCAA appearance. This outfielder and power hitter was the America
East Player of the Year as a junior after hitting .370 and leading
the league in home runs, RBI and slugging percentage. He drove
in more than one run per game and his RBI total ranked 11th in
the entire nation. As a sophomore, he was named to the NCAA regional
all-tournament team, leading the Bearcats to an historic victory
in the national tournament. A two-time first team all-conference
selection and an all-region pick, this player is stamping his
name throughout the record books. He currently ranks first in
career runs, RBIs and home runs and is second in career hits.
Chris Gaube (Gr.,
Cross country, track)
Captain on both the track and cross country programs. He is a
three-time all-conference honoree in cross country and in 2009,
he finished a career-high second overall at the America East
Championships as Binghamton won its first-ever team conference
title. In track, he is a four-time all-conference selection and
won the 5,000 meters at the 2009 America East Indoor Championships.
In the classroom, he was named the 2010 America East Scholar
Athlete and was Inducted into the National College Athlete Honors
Society in 2008. In the athletic department, he has been involved
in both SAAC and the Student-Athlete Leadership Institute. In
the community, he founded the Relentless Run Training Club in
2007. He has earned his bachelors degree and will also
receive his MBA from Binghamton this month.
2011 Jessie
A. Godfrey Award

Deannie
Plemon (Sr., Softball)
Co-captain of this years softball team who ranks first
all time in Binghamton program history in five offensive categories,
including home runs with 32, RBI with 118, and extra-base hits
with 62. In her junior season, Plemon hit a career-best .376
and was named first-team all-conference, second-team all-region
and was also a first-team ECAC all-star. She also reeled off
a BU-record 17-game hitting streak in 2010 and belted a career-high
14 home runs. This year, she ranks third in the America East
with nine home runs, is second with 39 RBI and tied for first
with 11 doubles.
Amanda
Ciccone
(Sr.,
Women's Swim)
A student-athlete in every sense of the phrase, Ciccone was a
team captain who helped earn her coaching staff top honors at
the 2011 America East Championships. She was the first womens
gold medalist since 2005 and holds two program records. She was
named the 2011 America East Scholar-Athlete and was the first
BU female swimmer named to the All-Academic team. Out of the
pool, she has been equally accomplished, serving as the primary
speaker at this years Celebrating Womens Athletics
Luncheon and earning multiple academic honors.

MALE
- Jake Katz
(Sr., Golf)
Co-captain of the mens golf team and the finest player
in that programs illustrious history at the university.
He has led his squad to eight team titles over four years and
the programs second-lowest team scoring average in school
history. As a senior this year, this recipient recorded one of
the best individual seasons in all of Division I collegiate golf
as he defeated more than 95% of his opponents and posted a remarkable
head-to-head record of 898 wins and just 37 losses. He collected
nine top-10 finishes, five runner-up performances and an individual
title at the Cornell Invitational. He was selected as a two-time
America Sky Player of the Year, conference Scholar Athlete of
the Year, and all-region selection. He holds the record for the
schools lowest career scoring average - 74.3 - and ranks
second all-time in top-10 finishes with 25. This player has also
set numerous single-season records, highlighted by the lowest
single round an incredible 66 at the Lafayette Invitational
last spring.
MALE
- Sven
Vloedgraven (Sr., Tennis)
Mens tennis player whose accomplishments are staggering.
Simply put he is the most talented and decorated player in the
programs 64-year history. Three-time America East Player
of the Year. Two-time Northeast Regional singles champion. Two-time
NCAA qualifier. The most singles and doubles wins in school history.
Ranked as high as No. 55 in the nation. This student-athlete
led his team to four consecutive America East championships and
automatic NCAA bids - every year of his career he led his team
to the conference title. This spring he has won 20 straight matches
and above all, he has been recognized by opponents and coaches
for his impeccable sportsmanship. Off the court, he is a scholar-athlete
in every regard, with a 3.83 GPA in accounting.
FEMALE
- Michelle
McDonough (Sr., Volleyball)
Volleyball standout who led her team to four straight conference
tournaments, highlighted by a title in 2009. From her outside
hitter position, this team captain led the 2010 Bearcats to their
seventh straight postseason appearance and regular-season runnerup
honors. During her career McDonough accumulated nearly 1,500
kills, breaking the schools all-time record. She is one
of three BU players to total over 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs
for her career. She is a four-time all-conference selection and
three-time all-academic team honoree. She was named the 2010
America East Scholar-Athlete for volleyball and is the Universitys
nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year.
