VESTAL, N.Y. - Coming off a 27-win season - the program's best at Division I, Binghamton head baseball coach Tim Sinicki has announced the signing of seven high school seniors and one junior college transfer who will join the Bearcats in 2008.
"This is a very deep, talented and athletic class," said Sinicki, who enters his 15th year with the Bearcats this spring. "These eight young men all have the ability to impact our program immediately. It's a real tribute to the amount of work and effort put forth by the enitre coaching staff over the past months and for that I am very grateful."
Here is a look at Binghamton's early signees:
Pete Bregartner: A left-handed batter and right-handed thrower who plays outfield and pitches for East Islip High School...batted .470 with five home runs, 32 RBI's and 28 runs scored in 2006.. also posted a 7-2 record on the mound with a 2.20 ERA... one of two juniors named All-Long Island in 2006... twice named all-league....starting center fielder on Long Island's gold medal winning team at the 2006 Empire State Games.
Tom Baileys: A utility player (catcher/first base/designated hitter) who throws and bats right-handed... Named Mid-State Athletic Conference Player of the Year following his freshman season at Broome Community College... named Souther Tier Athletic Conference all-divison and third team all-state following his senior year at Owego Free Academy.
Brian Ivan: A right-hander who plays third base and shortstop...As the starting third baseman, led Team Ontario to back-to-back National Championship Canada Cup titles... twice chosen as one of just 30 players in the country for Baseball Canada's Junior National Team selection process..led the Toronto Mets to the provincial championship in 2006.... attended Michael Power-St. Joseph High School in Toronto, ON.
C.J. Lukaszewski: A right-handed catcher... a two-year varsity starter for Kingston High School in Kingston, N.Y.... Played and batted third for the elite DiamondZone Dawgs over the summer.
Jeff Skelhorne-Gross: A right-handed catcher from Mississauga, Ontario... led the Intercounty Terriers to the 2006 U.S. Sandlot 18-under World Series title and the Ontario Premier Baseball League 18-under championship... played on the Canadian Junior National Team during their 2006 Dominican Republic summer tour.
Morgan Smith: A right-handed pitcher from Shenendehowa High School in Clifton Park, NY... pitched for the bronze medal-winning Adirondack Empire State Games team this past summer... Scheduled to be the number one starter at Shenendehowa this spring..brother Murphy is a freshman right-handed pitcher for the Bearcats.
Dan Steers: A right-handed pitcher who plays for Rondout Valley High School in Stone Ridge, NY... posted a 6-1 record with a 0.81 ERA sticking out 62 batters in 49 innings this past spring... named first-team all-league as both a sophmore and junior... played for the silver medal-winning Hudson Valley Empire State Games team this past summer.
Corey Taylor: An outfielder who bats right-handed from Vestal, NY... batted .353 while scoring a team-high 28 runs for Vestal High School... batted .420 with a team-high 37 hits, five doubles, seven home runs and 30 RBI's for his summer American Legion team.. named Souther Tier Athletic Conference all-metro division as a junior.. will continue the streak of having at least one Vestal High School graduate in the baseball program since moving to NCAA Division I status.
