Binghamton loses pair of conference games at first place Vermont

Vermont 3, Binghamton 1
Vermont 2, Binghamton 0

Burlington, Vt.-- The Binghamton University Bearcats (14-28, 7-9 AE) dropped a pair of conference games to first-place Vermont (22-13, 9-3 AE) on Monday afternoon in Burlington. Braving 30-degree temperatures with wind and snow, the Bearcats fell 3-1 and 2-0.

In the first game, Tim Collar (Groton) was 1-for-3 and scored the team’s only run. With BU trailing 3-0 entering their final at-bat, Collar singled to lead off the seventh inning. Two outs later he advanced to second on a single by Tyler McGonigal (Kendall). Matt Caputo (Pine Bush) then reached on an error and Collar came around to score. Down 3-1, BU had the tying runs in scoring position with two out, but was unable to complete the comeback.

Andy Kumming went the distance for Vermont, tossing a four-hitter with no walks and eight strikeouts while allowing just the unearned run in the seventh inning. The Catamounts opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Jeff Barry was 2-for-3 with a run scored and Nick Roberts had two hits and two RBI in the game.

In game two, three Vermont pitchers combined on a one-hitter and posted the two-run victory. Brent Dobens was the winning pitcher, throwing 2 2/3 shutout innings with four strikeouts. Justin Bissonnette pitched a scoreless inning for his fourth save.

Caputo had Binghamton’s only hit, a single to right field in the fifth inning. The Bearcats’ best scoring chance came in the fourth inning, when Catamount starter Mike Smith issued three one-out walks to load the bases. Dobens relieved Smith at that point and induced an inning-ending double play. Jacob Thiel (San Bruno, Calif.) took the loss for Binghamton, allowing seven hits and just two earned runs in the complete game effort. Thiel walked none and struck out three.

Next up for the Bearcats is a single game at Le Moyne on Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. Binghamton will be home this weekend for a three-game set with CW Post, with a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
