Baseball team inks three junior college standouts

VESTAL, N.Y.--The Binghamton baseball team has received a national letter of intent from three junior college players, all of whom will join the Bearcats for their junior season next fall. With these latest signings, Binghamton now has 10 players as part of its 2004 recruiting class.

David Lind (San Mateo, Calif.) is a 6-3, right-handed pitcher from Skyline College in San Bruno, California. In his sophomore season, he appeared in 15 games, making 12 starts, posted a 4-5 record, picked up a save and struck out 61 batters. Lind’s ERA was 2.62. He was Skyline’s number one starter and concluded the season by being named a Coast Conference North first team all-star.

"David has put up some extremely impressive numbers against great competition in the California Community College League,” Binghamton head coach Tim Sinicki said. “We expect David to make an immediate impact in our program."

Whitney Powell (Virginia Beach, Va.) is a 5-10 outfielder from Dundalk Community College in Baltimore, Md. This past spring, he batted .342 with three home runs and 25 RBI. He also had 25 stolen bases. Powell was named to the Maryland Junior College sophomore all-star team.

"Whitney has tremendous tools both offensively and defensively,” Sinicki said. “He's an impact kid who will add a spark to our lineup and solidify the outfield."

Keith Ford (Broken Arrow, Okla.) is a 5-11 shortstop from Coffeyville Community College in Coffeyville, Kan. In his sophomore campaign, he hit .329, scored a team-leading 34 runs, belted eight doubles and a pair of triples and was 31-for-33 in stolen bases. Coffeyville competes in the Jayhawk League, which is considered to be one of the top junior college leagues in the country.

"Keith's a flat-out burner,” Sinicki said. “He has tremendous range defensively and will be counted on to set the table for our middle of the order guys offensively."
