Senior third baseman ranks fourth in nation in slugging

Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Release

Binghamton University senior baseball player Jay Balback (Millsboro, Del.) has earned his second Player of the Week honor in as many days after an outstanding performance on the diamond last week. One day after being named the America East Player of the Week, Balback and three others were selected as Louisville Slugger's National Players of the Week by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. He was one of two hitters selected by the publication, joining Eastern Michigan outfielder Todd Kimling.

Balback enjoyed a tremendous week, hitting .667 with 14 hits and 14 RBI in four games. He belted five home runs, upping his season total to a conference-best nine, and also stretched his hit streak to 10 games. Balback's 22 career home runs is a new school record. He ranks first in the conference in home runs (9), doubles (12) and slugging percentage (.878), second in batting average (.422) and third in RBI (30).

In addition, Balback jumped into the NCAA statistical leaders in four categories. He ranks fourth in the country in slugging percentage (.878), eighth in doubles per game (0.5), 14th in home runs per game (0.38) and 23rd in batting average (.422).

Balback and the Bearcats play a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon at Siena. Binghamton (15-9) has won six in a row and 11 of its last 13 games.
