Boyer Binghamton University sophomore first baseman Jamie Boyer (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) was selected to the America East baseball second team, the school learned Wednesday evening. Boyer, who led the Bearcats (17-34, 8-12 AE) to a fifth place finish in the seven-school conference, was the lone BU player chosen by a vote of the America East head coaches.

“It’s a well-deserved honor for Jamie,” said head coach Tim Sinicki. “Through his hard work, he has taken his abilities to a higher level this season. Jamie will be looked upon as a leader and a major offensive force during his remaining time at the University.”

Boyer led the team in four offensive categories, including average (.323) and home runs (6). After a slow start, he batted .500 during a 16-game stretch in April and wound up hitting .396 over the final two months of the season (36-for-91). He was named America East Player of the Week on April 8 after batting .526 with five RBI during a 4-1 week for the Bearcats.

His 15 doubles in 2002 is the fifth-most in school history, and after just two seasons, his nine career home runs ranks among the program’s top-10. He made dramatic improvement in virtually every offensive category — jumping 137 points in slugging percentage and 96 points in on-base percentage from his freshman campaign. At first base, Boyer committed just three errors in 379 chances (.992).

Last season, he was a second team all-star in the Division I New York State Baseball Conference.

Regular-season conference champion Maine had six players chosen to the all-conference first and second teams. Runner-up Vermont and Albany had four players apiece, followed by Stony Brook (3), Hartford (2), Northeastern (1) and Binghamton (1).
