ITHACA, N.Y. - Binghamton (8-8) scored 24 runs and swept a twinbill from host Cornell (4-15) Tuesday afternoon at Hoy Field. The Bearcats rallied in both contests, scoring seven runs in the seventh inning of game one to complete a 13-5 comeback. Binghamton then plated nine runs to erase a deficit in the fifth inning of the nightcap, rallying for the 11-3 win.
In the opener, BU trailed 4-2 in the fifth inning before scoring four times to take the lead. Up 6-4, Binghamton then erupted for seven runs in the top of the seventh, with the big blow coming from in the form of a three-run double by senior right fielder T.J. Kowalchuk (Stormville, N.Y.). Sophomore pinch hitter John Hark (Wyckoff, N.J.) also delivered a two-run single. Junior reliever Mike Weglinski (Hyde Park, N.Y.) earned the win after 2.1 innings of work. He allowed two hits and improved to 2-0 with a 3.72 earned run average this spring. Freshman Zach Groh (Reading, Pa.) picked up the save after tossing three innings of one-run relief to end the game.
For the game, junior shortstop Keith Ford (Broken Arrow, Okla.) went 3-for-5 with two RBI, Kowalchuk was 2-for-5 with four RBI, and junior catcher Chris Darling (Whitesboro, N.Y.) drove in a pair of runs. Binghamton outhit their hosts, 11-6.
In game two, BU trailed 3-0 before exploding for nine runs in the fifth inning. The Bearcats added two more in the sixth before the game was called due to darkness. In that nine-run outburst, senior third baseman Jay Balback (Millsboro, Del.) riped a two-run home run - his fourth of the season. Later in the inning, Ford stroked a two-run single to left field and freshman left fielder Brendon Hitchcock (Laceyville, Pa.) followed with a two-run double. In all, BU rapped seven hits in the inning and batted around the order. Senior left fielder Joe Costello (Ventnor, N.J.) collected two of his three hits during the inning, including an RBI double, and Balback added to his home run with an RBI double in his second at-bat of the inning.
The Bearcats then tacked on two more runs in the sixth. Freshman second baseman Matt Simek (Vestal, N.Y.) ripped his first collegiate home run - a solo shot to lead off the inning - and Kowalchuk added an RBI single. Junior Tom Gaube (Vestal, N.Y.) struck out four in two innings of work, and registered his first win of the season.
Binghamton plays a single game at Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday.
