ITHACA, N.Y. - Cornell (12-14) pitchers limited Binghamton to two hits over nine innings and the Big Red plated three runs in the fourth inning to post a 3-0 win over the Bearcats (10-9) in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon at Hoy Field.
In the fourth, Cornell put together three singles and a double against freshman pitcher Matt Simone (Schenectady, N.Y.), who was making his first collegiate start. Simone allowed six hits in four innings, struck out two and didn't walk a batter. Only one of the six hits was for extra bases (double). Junior transfer Mario Roefaro (Utica, N.Y.) pitched three scoreless innings and freshman left fielder Joe Charron (Schaghticoke, N.Y.) pitched a scoreless eighth.
Senior designated hitter Mike Papili (Lancaster, N.Y.) collected both of BU's hits - singles in the third and seventh innings.
Binghamton welcomes America East foe Vermont for its home-opening series this weekend. The teams open a four-game series with a nine-inning game at 3 p.m. on Friday at Varsity Field.
