DALLAS, Texas. -- Binghamton baseball opened its season Friday afternoon, falling to host Dallas Baptist 6-2 at Patriot Field. Dallas Baptist, which won 37 games and advanced to the NCAA tournament last spring, broke open a 2-1 game with three runs in the fifth inning.
The Bearcats took an early 1-0 lead on a first-inning RBI double by sophomore right fielder Corey Taylor. Taylor's shot to right center plated junior left fielder Joe Charron, who had singled with two out.
Dallas Baptist responded with two runs in the bottom of the second - both solo home runs. The Patriots belted a leadoff shot and then a two-out homer to take a 2-1 lead. In the fifth frame, DBU benefited from three singles, an error and a wild pitch to score three more runs.
Down 5-1, BU loaded the bases with one out in the seventh but managed just one run on an RBI groundout by sophomore center fielder Henry Dunn.
The Patriots, who outhit BU 9-8 for the game, added another run in the eighth inning.
Senior lefty Jeff Dennis took the loss after going 4.1 innings and allowing five hits and four earned runs. Sophomore reliever Morgan Smith pitched well in relief, scattering four hits and one earned run over 3.2 innings. Smith struck out three and issued no walks.
Taylor went 2-for-4 with an RBI and junior second baseman Jim Calderone also went 2-for-4. Dunn went 1-for-4 with an RBI.
The teams will play a twinbill Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. (ET).
