BU baseball splits twinbill at Dallas Baptist, winning 3-1 and losing 15-4

DALLAS, Texas. -- Binghamton baseball split a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Dallas Baptist, winning 3-1 before absorbing a 15-4 loss at Patriot Field.

In the opener, BU took a 3-0 lead with a run in the first inning and two more in the eighth. The Patriots scored their lone run in the eighth and had the bases loaded before senior closer Greg Lane ended the threat with a groundout and fly ball. Lane then pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his first save of the season.

Junior starter Murphy Smith pitched five scoreless innings to earn the win. Smith scattered four hits, struck out one and walked one.

Sophomore center fielder Henry Dunn got things started in the first inning with a single and stolen base. Dunn then came around to score on a fielding error by the DBU third baseman. In the eighth inning, sophomore right fielder Peter Bregartner delivered an RBI groundout and junior left fielder Joe Charron added a sacrifice fly.

The Bearcats were outhit 9-3 in the game.

In game two, BU trailed 3-0 before scoring three runs in the fifth inning to tie the game. Junior second baseman Jim Calderone hit a two-run double and Charron added an RBI groundout.

But the Patriots struck for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth frame - on four hits, four walks, a wild pitch, hit batter and balk. The hosts then added two runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth as BU exhausted four relievers in 3.2 innings.

Dunn went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Charron was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Bregartner added two hits. Dunn went 4-for-9 in the three-game series (.444).

Binghamton heads to Norfolk State for a weekend series beginning next Saturday.
