VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton University junior left-handed pitcher Scott Diamond (Guelph, Ontario) has caught the attention of professional scouts after an outstanding summer season.
Diamond, an all-star for the Martinsville Mustangs (Va.) in the wooden bat Coastal Plain League, was ranked No. 7 in the CPL in Baseball America's listing of the Top Prospects for 18 College Summer Leagues. The publication listed the top 10 players in each of the summer leagues (30 in the Cape Cod League), and Diamond was the second highest ranked pitcher and top-ranked lefthander in the Coastal league.
In the publication's recap of each prospect, BA writer Aaron Fitt offered this perspective.
"Diamond has good command of three pitches: an upper-80s fastball with sink and run, a curveball and a cutter. He does a good job getting ahead of hitters early in the count. Diamond's mechanics are mostly smooth, and he's got an outstanding pickoff move."
He went 5-0 with a 0.50 earned run average in eight starts this summer. His Martinsville team went 35-16 overall. Diamond struck out 55 batters and walked just 13 in 54.1 innings and allowed just four extra-base hits and three earned runs. He had the lowest ERA of any starter in the 15-team league.
In his sophomore season for the Bearcats last spring, Diamond won five games, logged a team-high 75.1 innings and was the team's No. 2 starter. As a freshman, he won four games and was named America East Rookie of the Year.
The Coastal Plain League, certified by Major League Baseball, is in its 10th year and consists of 15 teams in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. More than 300 alumni from the league have been drafted and 16 have gone on to play in the Major Leagues. A few of the more prominent CPL alums are Justin Verlander (Detroit), Brad Eldred (Pittsburgh), Ty Wigginton (Tampa), Kevin Youkilis (Boston) and Ryan Zimmerman (Nationals).
