Bearcats split season-opening doubleheader at East Tennessee State

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Binghamton (1-1) enjoyed a game two offensive outburst and gained a split with East Tennessee State (3-2) Saturday afternoon in the season-opener for the Bearcats. The host Bucs won game one, 13-3, but Binghamton captured the nightcap, 15-7.

In the opener, BU was held to three hits, and East Tennessee State plated four runs in the fourth inning and six more in the fifth to stretch a 3-2 lead. Junior left fielder Joe Costello (Ventnor, N.J./Cumberland CC) belted a solo home run for the team's lone RBI.

In game two, BU exploded for 15 runs on 13 hits, and scored run in six of the seven innings. Junior center fielder T.J. Kowalchuk (Stormville, N.Y./Carmel) went 3-for-4 with four RBI, and senior right fielder Tony Berube (Vestal, N.Y./Keystone College) also drove in four runs. Kowalchuk ripped a three-run home run in the first inning, staking BU to a 3-0 lead. In the second frame, senior designated hitter Dusty Edwards (Windsor, N.Y./Broome CC) delivered a two-run double - part of three more runs in the inning. Up 8-7 after five innings, BU plated six insurance runs in the seventh inning.

Sophomore pitcher Mike Weglinski (Hyde Park, N.Y./FD Roosevelt) pitched 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to record the win. He scattered four hits and struck out two. Senior Jacob Thiel (San Bruno, Calif./Canada College) went 2-for-3 with an RBI after taking over at first base for junior Jamie Boyer (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township). Boyer, the team's top returning hitter and America East all-star, had to leave the game after reaggravating a wrist injury on his very first swing of the season in the top of the first inning.

The two teams will complete the three-game series with a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
