BU baseball player Hitchcock helps accounting team take second in nation
Sophomore on runner-up team in PriceWaterhouse Cooper competition

VESTAL, N.Y. - Less than one month before his sophomore baseball season begins, Binghamton University outfielder Brendon Hitchcock (Laceyville, Pa./Wyalusing Valley HS) flexed his academic muscle along with his School of Management classmates. Hitchcock and four other BU students advanced to the finals of the PriceWaterhouse Cooper extreme accounting (xAct) competition, finishing second overall.

The national competition, which took place in New York City on January 20, pitted BU's quintet against some of the best business programs in the country. The Binghamton team was one of five chosen to compete in the final round. Binghamton bested competitors from Indiana, Marquette and St. Louis universities for the second-place finish. Louisiana State University won the event.

To reach the finals, the team first won a campus-wide competition and then moved on to compete against schools from across the country, said John Barden, lecturer and coordinator of the xAct program.

In addition to having their expenses paid for their two-day trip to New York City, each team member will receive a $2,000 prize.

Hitchcock is coming off a freshman baseball season in which he earned second team All-America East honors after batting .305 with four home runs and 30 RBI. He also was a member of the America East honor roll for maintaining a 3.0 or higher grade-point average.

The Bearcats open their 2005 campaign on February 18-20 with a three-game series at Oklahoma State University. The Cowboys are ranked No. 23 in the Collegiate Baseball preseason poll.
