Immediate Release: April 12, 2004
Binghamton University freshman first baseman/DH Brendon Hitchcock (Laceyville, Pa./Wyalusing Valley HS) has been named America East Rookie of the Week for April 5-11. He becomes the first baseball player honored by the league this spring.
Hitchcock batted .400 during a 5-1 week for the Bearcats (11-9), who climbed two games over the .500 mark for the first time since early in the 2002 season. He raised his batting average 87 points and ran his hit streak to a team-best eight games during the week. Hitchcock had two or more hits in three of six games. He had three hits, three runs and two RBI in a doubleheader sweep of Cornell, and then went 3-for-5 in a win at FDU. In Binghamton's come-from-behind 8-7 win at Hartford, Hitchcock drilled a three-run home run to tie the game in Binghamton's final at-bat, and the Bearcats wound up winning in extra-innings.
He currently ranks fourth on the team in hits and doubles, and is sixth in RBI.
