The Binghamton baseball team has received a national letter of intent from Junior Mejia (Ventnor, N.J.), a high school senior who plays center field for Atlantic City High School. He will join the Bearcats for the 2003-04 academic year.

This past spring, Mejia batted a team-best .456 with four doubles, three triples and eight home runs. He was named first-team All-Cape Atlantic League, second-team All-South Jersey and third-team all-state. Mejia is also a member of the National Honor Society.

“Offensively and defensively Junior can flat out play the game,” Binghamton head coach Tim Sinicki said. “He will bring a dimension to our program that we have been missing for quite some time - a true lead-off hitter and center fielder. Junior has the ability to be a four-year impact player here at Binghamton.”

Mejia is the fifth and final high school senior to sign with Binghamton this fall. He joins second baseman Matt Simek (Vestal, NY.), first baseman/ outfielder Brendon Hitchcock (Laceyville, Pa.), pitcher Mike Van Gorder (Vestal, N.Y.) and catcher Pat Haughie (St. James, N.Y.).

“We are thrilled with what each of these players have to offer,” assistant coach Mike Collins said. “Our coaching staff has worked hard to identify and recruit high school players that can be solid contributors right away. Each of these guys has the potential to make a difference as freshman.”
