Baseball team swept at Lafayette

Game 1: Lafayette 5, Binghamton 3
Game 2: Lafayette 6, Binghamton 2

The Binghamton baseball team (8-31-1) dropped a doubleheader at Lafayette (14-23) on Saturday, losing the opener 5-3 before falling 6-2 in the nightcap.

In the first game, senior outfielder Tony Berube (Vestal, N.Y./ Keystone College) led off the game with a home run to left field, quickly giving the Bearcats a 1-0 advantage. That lead, however, would be short-lived, as the host Leopards came back with a pair of runs in both the first and second innings to take a 4-1 lead.

Binghamton wouldn't quit, as freshman shortstop Justin Smucker (Bird-in-Hand, Pa./ Lancaster Mennonite) scored on a throwing error in the fourth inning and senior outfielder Tom Cummings (Oneida, N.Y./ Vernon-Verona-Sherill) drilled a solo home run in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 4-3. Lafayette, however, scored again in the bottom of the sixth inning and held the Bearcats scoreless the rest of the way.

The Bearcats again came out strong in the first inning of the nightcap, as Smucker scored on a RBI double by junior third baseman Jay Balback (Millsboro, Del./ Indiana Institute of Technology) to take a 1-0 lead. Once again, however, Lafayette came right back, scoring five times in the bottom of the inning to take a commanding 5-1 advantage.

Taking advantage of an error in the top of the fifth inning, Binghamton got to within 5-2, but the Leopards quickly responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 6-2 lead. Neither team scored the rest of the game.

Binghamton and Lafayette face off in a doubleheader at Binghamton on Sunday at noon.
