EASTON, Pa. - Visiting Binghamton (7-7-1) swept a doubleheader from Lafayette (7-10) Friday afternoon at the Class of 1978 Stadium, winning 5-3 and 17-4.
In the first game, BU snapped a 2-2 tie with single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and senior lefthanded pitcher Mike Weglinski (Hyde Park, N.Y.) made it stand, scattering seven hits and allowing three earned runs. Weglinski (3-0) gave way to junior Adam Shatkun (Plainview, N.Y.), who pitched a hitless seventh inning for his third save of the season. At the plate, sophomore first baseman Brendon Hitchcock (Laceyville, Pa.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI double, and senior shortstop Keith Ford (Broken Arrow, Okla.) also collected two hits.
In game two, BU batted around in the first inning for the second time in four days. After scoring a school-record 34 runs Tuesday at St. Peter's, Binghamton put 17 on the board against Leopards pitching. The Bearcats scored six runs in the first inning, two in the second and five more in the third inning to begin the barrage. Four more runs in the fifth inning completed the offensive showing, which was aided by eight Lafayette errors. Binghamton wound up scoring 11 unearned runs.
Hitchcock went 3-for-4 with a three-run home run and five RBI. Hitchcock belted the long ball in the first inning, added RBI singles in the second and third innings. Junior third baseman Matthieu Bergeron (St. Celestin, Quebec) was 3-for-4 with a solo home run and two RBI. Bergeron's first-inning blast was his fifth of the season. Sophomore catcher Pat Haughie (St. James, N.Y.) went 3-for-5 with an RBI.
Junior Jarrod Rampey (Rochester, N.Y.) evened his record at 2-2 after allowing five hits and one earned run in six innings. Rampey struck out six and walked three.
