Box Score

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Sophomore pitcher Jeff Dennis (North Syracuse, N.Y.) went seven strong innings and Binghamton (5-4) belted two home runs in a 3-1 win over Lafayette Sunday afternoon from LIU Field.

Dennis (1-0) was superb on the hill, allowing just two hits and one run in seven frames. He struck out eight and walked two and lowered his season earned run average to 0.68.

Three BU pitchers limited the Leopards to just four hits over nine innings, with junior closer Khalid Afify (Binghamton, N.Y.) working the final 1.1 innings for his second save of the season. Afify struck out a pair and allowed just one hit.

Binghamton plated single runs in the third, sixth and seventh innings, while Lafayette scored its lone run in the fourth. Sophomore third baseman Kyle Klee (Rochester, N.Y.) belted a solo home run to open the scoring in the third frame. Klee sent a two-strike offering over the left field fence. With the score knotted at 1-1 in the sixth, senior designated hitter Matt Simek (Vestal, N.Y.) ripped a two-out RBI single to put BU ahead for good. Freshman right fielder Joe Charron (Schaghticoke, N.Y.) belted a solo home run to left in the seventh to close out the scoring.

Simek and freshman second baseman Val Arduini (Clifton, Va.) had two hits apiece.

Binghamton travels to Salt Lake City for a three-game set against BYU next weekend. The first game is slated for 6 p.m. on Friday.
