BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Binghamton baseball split a doubleheader with host Lehigh Saturday afternoon, losing 7-2 and winning the nightcap 5-2 at Goodman Campus.
In the opener, the Mountain Hawks snapped a 2-2 tie with a two-out run in the fifth inning and added four more runs on three hits and an error in the sixth for the 7-2 win. Senior Jeff Dennis (1-3) went the distance and allowed six hits and four earned runs in six innings. He struck out four and walked two. Sophomore catcher Jeff Skelhorne-Gross went 1-for-3 and delivered a two-run single in the second inning that gave the Bearcats a short-lived 2-0 lead. Lehigh countered with two runs in the bottom of the frame.
In game two, junior starter Murphy Smith pitched nine strong innings and the Bearcats rallied from 2-0 down with back-to-back-to-back home runs in a dramatic four-run eighth inning. Binghamton added another run in the ninth for the comeback 5-2 win. Smith (3-1) allowed seven hits and two runs, struck out six and walked just one, lowering his season ERA to 3.16.
With two out in the eighth inning, junior second baseman Jim Calderone belted a two-run home run and senior third baseman Kyle Klee and sophomore center fielder Corey Taylor followed with solo home runs. The Bearcats added another run in the ninth on a run-scoring single from sophomore right fielder Peter Bregartner.
Bregartner went 2-for-5 with an RBI and freshman first baseman Dave Ciocchi went 2-for-4.
The teams play another twinbill on Sunday with the first pitch set for noon.
