BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Binghamton baseball (6-7) swept a doubleheader from host Lehigh Sunday afternoon, winning 5-3 and 6-3 at Goodman Campus. The Bearcats took three of four in the series and have now won five of their last six games.
In the opener, sophomore James Giulietti scattered five hits and one earned run over six innings for his first win of the spring. Giulietti (1-1) struck out five and didn't walk a batter, and BU gave him support with two runs in the second, one in the third and two more in the fourth frame. Lehigh counterd with a run in the fourth and two in the seventh before senior closer Greg Lane induced a comeback ground ball with the tying run at the plate to end the game.
Junior second baseman Jim Calderone went 3-for-4, sophomore center fielder Corey Taylor went 2-for-3 and senior third baseman Kyle Klee recorded two RBI. Klee's two-run double in the fourth inning pushed BU's lead to 5-0.
In game two, four Bearcat pitchers held the Mountain Hawks to six hits over nine innings. Freshman Mike Augliera (1-2) earned his first collegiate win with five innings of one-run pitching. Lane pitched the ninth inning for his second save of the day and spring. Lane, who led the America East with 11 saves in '08, struck out the final Lehigh batter looking with the bases loaded to end the threat and the game.
Senior designated hitter Ken Jacobi went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI. Jacobi belted a two-run triple in the first inning to give the Bearcats an early lead. Klee added an RBI single as BU pushed across two more runs in the third. Junior shortstop Jeff Abrams went 2-for-3 and Taylor was 2-for-5. In the four-game series, Taylor hit a team-best .400 (6-for-15).
Binghamton next play four games in the America East-Northeast Conference Challenge on March 27-29. The Bearcats open against Quinnipiac on Friday.
